Manning expected to return to Miami after Arizona visit

Peyton Manning smiles at a question asked at a press conference announcing his release from the Indianapolis Colts in Indianapolis Reuters

NFL Network’s Jason La Canfora reports that free agent Peyton Manning has “nothing scheduled” after his Saturday night and Sunday visit in Arizona. Manning is expected to return to his Miami condo following the meeting with Cardinals brass.

While La Canfora acknowledges that this is “subject to change,” Manning is apparently not planning a stop in Kansas City before heading back east. Chiefs owner Clark Hunt is interested in Manning, but there are no indications that the feeling is mutual.

So the three favorites to sign Manning are the Broncos, Cardinals, and Dolphins, the latter of whom Manning will presumably visit when he returns to South Beach. Among the trio, a clear frontrunner has yet to emerge.

A Broncos team source did tell the Denver Post Saturday that Manning’s visit to Denver was “productive,” and the team is “hopeful and encouraged by the time spent” with the future Hall of Famer.

Oh, thank goodness….. Another Manning Story.

    THIS JUST IN: Manning sneezed.

Can’t wait for the next story. I am at the edge of my seat.

Look, we win SBs. The rest of the league remains in our shadow (shocker) and will remain there forever. We’ll win this 7th and start our own league where we might see some competition.

  5. shaggytoodle says: Mar 10, 2012 8:00 PM

Maybe he does want to go to Miami, made the tour, and going back thier to see if the Phins are willing to match or better the offer.

I think Manning would be best fit in the NFC west as far as best chance to win a division. The AFC east vs. the Pats, and not knowing to to expect from the Jets.

  6. factoryofsadness says: Mar 10, 2012 8:01 PM

This is crazy. The guy can’t play anymore. If he could the colts wouldn’t have cut him…Someone is about to WASTE A LOT of money!!

  7. sterilizecromartie says: Mar 10, 2012 8:01 PM

I’ll be shocked if Peyton doesn’t at least pay a visit to KC. I say they are the perfect fit. In Denver he has to worry about Tebowmaniacs cheering for his backup. In Miami he has to battle Brady for the division each year, making the playoffs that much more difficult to reach. And Arizona plays in the NFC, in which it has been speculated that he wishes to avoid that conference.

In KC he goes against a weak division. He had weapons (Bowe, Baldin, Breaston, Moeaki, J Charles). And Romeo Crennel seems like the laid-back and mild mannered coach that Peyton would enjoy playing for… much like Dungy.

  8. randomguy9999 says: Mar 10, 2012 8:02 PM

    the Denver visit was “productive”…

translation Elway got into full frontal begging mode: “Please get us out of Tebow!”

  9. kmurph1226 says: Mar 10, 2012 8:03 PM

Is Peyton using the Broncos and Cardinals to raise the price the Dolphins will pay for Manning? It’s not good that he will leave with his mind not made up yet.

  10. edusregis says: Mar 10, 2012 8:03 PM

Oh, the suspense is killing me. Trips Denver and Arizona, skips KC, settles in Miami. Looks that way to me. And I am a Lions fan.

Of course the Broncos brass are going to say everything positive. What are they supposed to say? “Oh that visit wasn’t as good as we had hoped. We don’t think Peyton likes us.”

If Miami really wants him they have to let just Philbin and Sherman take the meeting.

Just have them hand him sacks of money compliments of the owner. If Ross & Ireland show up it’s all over. They make Jim Irsay look like Lincoln giving the Gettysburg Address!

Personally, I would be shocked if Manning would work for two guys so incredibly unimpressive.

If you don’t care then why bother clicking the article and commenting? If you didn’t know it’s the off-season with not much going on and arguably the biggest free agent in NFL history is picking a team, of course there is going to be a lot of stories about where he is and what teams he has met with…

Would you rather get a story about what’s not going on in the league?

  28. metalhead65 says: Mar 10, 2012 8:22 PM

Please Peyton sign with Miami. Because it would be a true test of Heckert and Holmgren. If they don’t get Flynn with Peyton in Miami the Browns are not trying to win.

  33. xpensivewinos says: Mar 10, 2012 8:28 PM

Manning is doing his due diligence. He’s played in the same two places for the past 18 years.

Anyone who thinks he needs to leverage other teams against Miami hasn’t been paying attention. Ross will pay anything to get him. He’s already bidding against himself. It makes no difference what they offered him.

The key though, is the amount of cap space available to bring in some of his buddies. Denver has a huge advantage there.

  34. sunlion333 says: Mar 10, 2012 8:28 PM

    KC: Cold winter games outside
    Denver: Cold winter games outside
    AZ: Bad O-line
MIA: A RT away from great O-line, plenty of offensive weapons(plus add Wayne, Garcon or any other WR he wants from Free Agency including V. Jax), emerging great defense, warm weather year round, He already owns a home there and is great friends with Marino, New HC, so offense will be his to command and Steven Ross will pay “anything” he wants.

    Any questions?

  40. greatminnesotasportsmind says: Mar 10, 2012 8:37 PM

Wow, for as much ripping i see on manning, unless your team has rodgers, Brady, roethlisberger, Favre, rivers, Marino, stafford, or Eli manning… Your team probably needs him. Oh for the record a couple names were added just to keep you paying attention….

  41. azheat says: Mar 10, 2012 8:38 PM

Alot of people are saying Peyton can’t play anymore because the colts cut him.

If that’s the case how do you explain Reggie Wayne, Dallas Clark and Bracket. Using their thinking does that mean these others can’t play either?

I feel after going 2-14 Jim Irsay is trying to start over. Problem is he thinks Luck is the next Peyton. Ask Miami fans about another legend qb after Marino or the Broncos after Elway or the Cowboys after Aikman. I can only think twice when a team shifts 1 great QB to the next great QB. 49ers with Montana to Young and Packers with Farve to Rodgers.

Franchise QBs dont come along very often…Irsay thinks Luck is next, that all. Im pretty sure P. Manning can still play.

I know its easy Colts fans and Manning haters to say different. But look at it, do u really think he needs money? Peyton can only hurt his legecy if hes not healthy, hes fine youll see.

It’s gonna be funny to read comments from Dolphin fans on Tuesday after Manning signs somewhere else, I’m sure it’ll be about how they wanted someone else anyways. 2012 will be the year that they finally get the Orton they were dreaming of last year…then in 2013 they will have Landry Jones.

  45. zampft says: Mar 10, 2012 8:59 PM

    Denver – cold weather
    Arizona – NFC
Dolphins – have to play 3 divisional away games in cold weather

None of these teams is really a perfect fit. Perhaps there’s a sleeper somewhere we haven’t heard of yet, staying under the radar?

  47. justentertainingthestupid says: Mar 10, 2012 9:29 PM

Why is everyone so caught up in the “He would have to go through Brady and the jets in the east” thing?! So Miami went 6-10 with a backup quarterback for most of the season. They lost to Brady and the pats on the road by a field goal with a back up QB and a interim head coach. The Dolphins have beat Brady and Belicheat more than any other team in the NFL.Manning,Bush, Marshall, Wayne, Clark,Bess,Fasano, your Mom.

  48. ductguy says: Mar 10, 2012 9:31 PM

Brady who?? Manning would rule the afc east!!!

  49. commandercornpone says: Mar 10, 2012 9:54 PM

since wayne and clark are FAs, they can go with manning in a package deal. instant offense. yer team’s current receivers become… depth.

seattle, kc, denver all cold. i think peyton if healthy (doubt he really is) seattle or kc would go to the playoffs. not sure denver d could live with a quick scoring offense. they need time to rest.

az iffy line but then… peyton might make them get one. weak division. star wr already. trade kolb.

miami nice weather. everyone has to play a cold game some time.

All of you that say Miami are idiots there are no reports of even a visit yet. They said he would decide by monday or Tuesday no way does KC have a shot. All of you that are listening to analysts say its a great fit and very possible are completely wrong. He doesn’t wanna play brady and and the jets twice a year also who knows what buffalo can do next year. Its gonna be Denver or Arizona. I say Denver wins easy division with Peyton I think they can win every game against division opponents. They have a lot better defense then Manning ever had in Indy its only gonna get better if they can play from ahead vroom and doom will kill opposing quarterbacks. If Denver can get another cornerback and safety. They will be good to go even if we kept the same backers and d line. They will most likely get a guy for each of those positions too. Everyone of you will see next week.

  53. clc77759 says: Mar 10, 2012 11:16 PM

Denver has a secret weapon in Manning’s best friend and college teammate Todd Helton. He said he would talk to Manning if it came down to the Broncos and another team say the Cardinals. With them both in Arizona right now Todd for Spring Training. I’m sure they will meet up and talk. He will tell him how great Colorado is to live. In December and January your more likely to see temps in the 50’s and 60′ then snow. We don’t get a lot of snow its mostly in the mountains. Its been in the 70’s off and on and we got more to come in the next few days. Peyton will love the mountains and outdoor activities we have here in.Colorado its a beautiful place to live without the big city feel. We have Aspen which everyone knows is the Beverly Hills of the Rockies. Even without the dome he will be fine I don’t think its a deal breaker clearly to him.

  54. clc77759 says: Mar 10, 2012 11:33 PM

Pat Bowlen said is not going to be an issue he said he will pay whatever it takes to get him. We have something like 50 million under the cap that means we could sign some of his buddies we need another wr reggie wayne, TE in Dallas Clark, we can sign Jeff Saturday as well and see who is the better lineman Zane Beadles or Jd Walton. Heck even Addai could help Denver. They could get gary bracket to be our new middle lb and defensive captain and just sign melvin bullitt as a rebound candidate at safety maybe he can return to old form.

    @ ^^^^^

He is visiting Miami last. So you people from KC ans Seattle just forget about it already. He is not going there. It will be between Miami, Arizona, and Denver. Those are Peyton’s choices. I personally think he is saving Miami for last because in his mind he wants to stay in Miami. Miami will match any offer. Ross as guaranteed this practically. Miami will also bring in Wayne for Peyton also. I am not saying Denver and Arizona don’t have a chance but I think Miami is in the drivers seat right now.

  57. keepthisrealbro says: Mar 11, 2012 12:45 AM

  58. bearsbuiltnfl says: Mar 11, 2012 12:47 AM

And btw, I wanna say that Manning lands in Miami because of the temperate climate (absolutely NO cold weather, open air stadiums!! You guys are smarter than that, right?!). I’ll buy Arizona, albeit being in the NFC, cause there’s the same temperance without the humidity and that field is plush. It’s one of these two spots, guaranteed, whoever wants to relinquish duckets!

I’d love to see him go there so we can have a football season without every Sportscenter being lead by Tebow completing 2 of 20 passes, but it’s not going to happen.

  63. ishudbgm says: Mar 11, 2012 4:48 AM

If P is smart he chooses KC. Denver won the division at 8-8 last year while KC came in last at 7-9. Peyton could have a 4.3 rb, solid #1 in Bowe, McCluster in the slot , Wayne on the other side, and Moeki (Peyton loves his T.E.). Romeo would let him dominate and run that locker room. He could breeze through his division and for the next 4 years everybody has to go to a super loud KC to make it to the SB. It would literally flip the entire AFC on its head!!!! I didn’t even mention Baldwin or Breston!

A few mention a comparison to Favre changing teams…..one difference….Favre didn’t have a choice as TT made it for him with a trade. Peyton has the luxury of choosing the environment he’d like to finish his career with. Much better senario. As with Favre Peyton still has some years in the arm. Feel Peyton will go with a warm weather or dome team….the neck will bother him in cold weather. But the team has to keep him upright.
