Manning is “making it up as he goes”

image Getty Images

Quarterback Peyton Manning has a reputation for thorough preparation and careful thought.  But that’s not how he’s treating his first foray into free agency.

It seemed like an embellishment at best, a flat-out fib at worst, when Manning said upon being released by the Colts that he hasn’t thought about his next destination.  Apparently, it was the truth.

A source with knowledge of the situation tells PFT that Manning currently is “making it up as he goes.”  Per the source, Manning never envisioned being in this situation, and he simply hadn’t planned for it.

And so, as reporters throw elbows in an effort to track down any sliver of insight regarding Peyton’s plans, the reality is that he has no plan.  Friday’s trip to Denver was simply the first stop.  And now Arizona is the second.

As a practical matter, it means that Peyton ultimately will be relying heavily on a gut feeling that will emerge after meeting with however many teams he decides to meet with before making his decision.  Which means that it will be critical for the various suitors to establish with Peyton a real connection that will allow him to believe it’s the right move, wherever he ends up moving.

In this regard, there’s also a benefit to being the last team who meets with Peyton.  If it’s a close call, the folks he’s with when he’s close to making up his mind will have a decided advantage.

So after Tuesday we won’t have a Manning upset every 20 seconds or so….what will we do.

  5. yycfin says: Mar 10, 2012 8:44 PM

I believe he has know all along. His last stop is going home to Miami and I think the other visits are just for show. I guess we’ll find out soon.

  6. mrslay1 says: Mar 10, 2012 8:44 PM

Texans the best place for a Super Bowl! Miami is where QB’s go to kill their careers, not win Super Bowls!

  7. kegowhisky says: Mar 10, 2012 8:44 PM

With Peyton’s bucks, it’s hard to believe he doesn’t have a trusted Man Friday or equivalent advisor to help steer him in the right direction. Not sure Archie is the right guy, but there has to be someone on Team Peyton….

  8. dannyutah13 says: Mar 10, 2012 8:45 PM

Hey…U guys got it right PFT…..The Last team to see him will prosper. Or perhaps Manning knew all this time he wants to be in miami. Heres why. He doesn’t wanna just see miami first and sign right away. He wants some kind of leverage here. Look good by seeing these other teams…He won’t sign until he sees at least 3 or more teams anyway the guys not stupid. Hes gonna be in Miami I guarantee it. He has the best shot at winning there. Not just games, but overall.

  9. brintfatre says: Mar 10, 2012 8:45 PM

Archie is calling all the shots and you can bet he’s planned every move.

  10. nomesayin says: Mar 10, 2012 8:46 PM

“making it up as he goes”?
Meh, he’s used to calling audibles. He’ll be fine

  11. edusregis says: Mar 10, 2012 8:47 PM

“And so … the reality is that he has no plan”. No Mike, he absolutely has a plan just like you: To end up in the best situation possible. Why is that so hard to comprehend?

  12. snarkzilla says: Mar 10, 2012 8:47 PM

Of course he’s going to Miami. He’s going to go get totally freaked out by Stephen Ross and then go home to South Beach.

  13. jaggedmark says: Mar 10, 2012 8:48 PM

John Elway is going to stretch his lips from Denver all the way to Miami, just to kiss Peyton’s ass. It won’t matter who Peyton will be with in his last meeting. Elway’s lips will be right there in the room with them.

  14. i10east says: Mar 10, 2012 8:49 PM

I’ll like to see PM do a high school style ‘Decision’ complete with hats of about six NFL teams; He fakes putting on the Seahawks hat then tosses it aside; Grabs the Broncos hat, then chucks it away; Then finally snags the Dolphins hat and voila, he’s a Dolphin. LOL

  15. oklahomaseahawk says: Mar 10, 2012 8:51 PM

I don’t even think it was Peyton in the video throwing @ Duke lol!!!
    Now that would be funny…

  16. lostsok says: Mar 10, 2012 8:51 PM

Manning may not have had a clue…but I guarantee his WIFE did, and she made her mind up the moment it was clear he was no longer a Colt.

Now she’s just letting him pretend he has a say in it…

  17. bigredcards says: Mar 10, 2012 8:51 PM

I dont think the cardinals will sign him but oh would it make my day seeing all these phin fans crying like babies when he doesn’t sign with them

  18. everydayimfumbilin says: Mar 10, 2012 8:52 PM

As reported by jay glazer, Manning was just seen entering a restroom at dennys. reported time in bathroom was quoted as being “extensive”.

  19. delaney37 says: Mar 10, 2012 8:52 PM

Im gonna lmao when he signs with a team other than the phins. He doesnt want a wild card shot but a division title and the phins will not win it until Brady retires. LOL Miami is where players careers die. THEY SUCK BALLS

  20. rexismybff says: Mar 10, 2012 8:52 PM

He’d be a fool to leave the desert without a contract. Perfect weapons, perfect weather, perfect coaching staff, perfect annual cream-puff schedule. He could play 5 more years out there without getting a single grass stain on his uniform, unless Patrick Willis can knock him down in under 2.5 seconds.

And that city has absolutely NO expectation level. Super Bowl, no Super Bowl – no problem. He’ll be beloved no matter what he does there.

  21. kmurph1226 says: Mar 10, 2012 8:53 PM

Maybe Peyton will set up an MMA match between Elway and Marino and whoever wins is where he goes.

  22. firedup1 says: Mar 10, 2012 8:53 PM

He is going to KC. His agent played there also.

  23. mrlynch33 says: Mar 10, 2012 8:54 PM

  24. profootballwalk says: Mar 10, 2012 8:54 PM

So the trolls of PFT knew this was coming for weeks, but Manning himself had no idea? I think that pinched nerve in his neck did more damage than we realized.

  29. georgebrett says: Mar 10, 2012 9:01 PM

He’ll go where he sees himself being a quarterback with receivers to throw to. Where is that going to be? Arizona is a dome like he had before but with grass not turf. Miami is nice weather but again grass. Denver cold and grass. KC, cold with grass. My bet is Arizona with a man by the name of Fitzgerald who just this season signed long term. DONE DEAL!!!

  30. stoneydog1000 says: Mar 10, 2012 9:02 PM

I like Manning so I hope he does but I dont see it happening with all those surgeries.
He will not play in the AFC West cause he knows the Raiders D will end his career

  36. nygdefenserules says: Mar 10, 2012 9:04 PM

If he wants to win now, his best bet is to go into the weakest division – the AFC West.

If he signs with Miami in the East, he will need to compete with the Jest and Patriots.

No one in the North has expressed interest – although Baltimore SHOULD! Flacco is in the last year of his rookie deal and wants more money than he deserves!

In the South, Tennessee has shown rumored interest, but they are more than a QB away from being good. Texans haven’t shown interest.

In the West, he just needs to decide which team is closer….Kansas City or Denver. Denver played their hearts out last year, but KC has more talent around the team. Denver’s coach hasn’t won anything…..KC’s has 5 rings (3 w/ NE…2 w/NYG). Scott Paoli has worked in the Patriots system building champions….

He should be a Chief – hands down, no questions asked.

  40. crazybeardedjack says: Mar 10, 2012 9:10 PM

Has anyone mentioned Tennessee as a darkhorse? Yeah they’ve got Locker, but imagine if they could groom him for 3 years under Peyton Manning. They’ve got a potentially great running back, good, young receivers and tight end, and a solid defense. Their line is also solid and it would be a great way to end his career.

  42. holdthemayo123 says: Mar 10, 2012 9:14 PM

Dan Marino is also available. And I bet he can actually throw a football.

  43. dave1961 says: Mar 10, 2012 9:21 PM

I beginning to wonder just how much thought Manning put into his tour for the almighty buck. Did he bother to think about fellow starting qbs on his stop. I highly doubt it. It’s kinda of a selfish act on the Manning family part.

  44. tmb333 says: Mar 10, 2012 9:23 PM

He will resign with the Colts or if he can’t play Irsay has a front office job for him.

Who will sign him and not see him throw? If they do, what a huge risk to take.

Manning coming to miami is like the beverly hillbillies.

  48. mjkelly77 says: Mar 10, 2012 9:31 PM

Manning is trying to start a bidding war. When a team asks him about his arm and if they can see him throw he just says “sorry, I gotta get on the plane”. It’s going to catch up with him sooner or later. Then the scam is over. Caveat Emptor.

  49. butkus54 says: Mar 10, 2012 9:31 PM

I think Peyton has given a lot of thought about how and where he wants to finish his career. This little tour he’s on is just to be sure in his mind he’s made the right decision. He doesn’t need to use Denver or any other team for leverage. He can name his price. It’s more than just the money to him… It’s about his legacy.

  50. peytonsneck18 says: Mar 10, 2012 9:32 PM

Teams and fans are fighting over a damaged QB, he will sign for whoever doesn’t care to see him throw. He will swindle them like he did the colts last year and end up having to retire before season starts due to arm nerves not regenerating properly after him and his agent Tom “scrooge mcduck” Condon will pocket the teams guaranteed money that whoevers team sign him. Teams want the peyton manning name on their team but are gona get the equivalent of a throwing arm strenght of Archie Manning at 70 years old

  51. hillbillyjim says: Mar 10, 2012 9:34 PM

I still can’t figure out why Arizona fans are using the term receiver in it’s plural form??? They have Fitz and a bunch of cactus on the field. Are the Cards going to add Billy “White Shoes” Johnson for WR depth? Lebron is trying to lure Manning to Miami with all of his and Mario’s championships.

  52. JohnnySinns says: Mar 10, 2012 9:36 PM

he is “making it up as he goes”, yet he’ll pick in a team in less than a week?

spare us the smoke screen (lie) mike….dude, knows what he is doing.

i have a hunch he has already signed with denver, which resulted in elway giving his buddy, shanny, a early xmas present…

  53. tothefellowshipofthemiserable says: Mar 10, 2012 9:39 PM

This Manning watch is starting to look like the Lebron sideshow ( The decision ).

  54. mcjon22 says: Mar 10, 2012 9:40 PM

His agency will steer him to Miami. Big market, won’t have to find they’re other client Tim Tebow a new home, and the fact that there is a HUGE amount of money pouring in over seas betting Manning lands in Miami according to the Palm Beach Post. The odds went from 5-1 to 2-1 in TWO days. Someone, somewhere knows something we don’t and is putting a lot of money on that knowledge. And I would give you 2-1 odds that that info came from the agency representing Peyton Manning.

  55. tedmurph says: Mar 10, 2012 9:43 PM

That big sports network will have another circus show like Lebron James’ Then he’ll retire ’cause he can’t throw anymore. Great player has thrown his last pass in the NFL. Quit gettin’ all your panties in a twist.

When I go in and interview for a sales job on Monday, do you think I should be concerned with who’s job it might be taking? No. If they were great at it, it wouldn’t be available. Should I be concerned with the other candidates? No. Everyone owes it to themselves to put themselves in the best situation if the opportunity arises.

  57. dpeterson75 says: Mar 10, 2012 9:44 PM

Bearded jack, i totally agree. If he came here to tennessee he would have a damn good supporting cast. Cj2k would be a major upgrade from any back hes ever had, he would have a healthy Britt, a 1000 yard receiver, a pretty good tight end in Cook and a really good O line if they fix the interior. Even with a young and average defense that team could take the afc south by storm.

  58. coltsfan23il says: Mar 10, 2012 9:46 PM

  61. jonsey2028 says: Mar 10, 2012 10:06 PM

These teams reached out to him, not Mannings fault they are looking for replacements at the QB position, Tebow a first round pick; can’t complete a pass! Kolb is a total waste money and draft picks. What do you want Manning to do? Go in there and offer to back them up or help teach them the position! C’mon please thats why Denver has got no shot at em, and for Arizona he’s not going their to cover up the mistakes they have made. These are courtesy visits out of respect for two friends in John Fox and Ken Whisenhunt. He will look at Miami and if he can’t work any thing out with them he replace some shlep QB somewhere else because thats life in the NFL.

  69. pandebailey says: Mar 10, 2012 11:14 PM

The last team Peyton sees could have an advantage? Not so sure that’s true……a lot of sales people will tell you that customers often make up their minds BEFORE they get to the last sales pitch.

Also, you’re making Manning sound like a buyer who doesn’t really know what he’s looking for. That sounds pretty much the opposite of the Peyton Manning we all know. I think he’ll make a solid business decision based on the players, system, ownership and coaches.

  70. firedup1 says: Mar 10, 2012 11:31 PM

Yes, I am a Dolphins Fan.. And No, I don’t think Manning is going to sign with us.. What really gets me is all the posting Ladies/Gentlemen that Keep saying.. Miami Sucks or Miami is a Career killer.. Here’s a thought.. Colts has longest record of 12 wins last 7 years… Manning goes out.. They win less than 3 Games.. Miami won 6 without Manning this year.. So, you think with Manning they’d win even less?? Now, I’m not a Mensa candidate but wouldn’t that possible make the Dolphins just as good or better if we did sign Manning?? Miami has had unfortunate FO, and I don’t think him signing would send us to the Bowl game.. I’m just saying, we’re not as bad as people keep posting.. Especially, since we’re in a division that forces at least a 10 win game season.. To even have a chance to make a playoff game.. Hell, if we were in AFC West.. We’d been in the stiffs anothe 5 years due to our record.. Think about it..

  73. sullijo1 says: Mar 10, 2012 11:46 PM

I love how people keep saying he is going to Arizona because of Larry Fitzgerald. Just because the Cards have Larry Fitzgerald that means that Manning is going to sign there? Larry Fitzgerald is the ONLY thing the Cards have.

In Miami he would have Brandon Marshall, Davone Bess, top 3 LT in Jake Long, future Pro Bowl center in Pouncey, overall just a better Oline than the Cards. The Dolphins also have a better run game in Reggie Bush and Daniel Thomas.

So yes the Cards have Larry Fitzgerald but the are 10mil over the salary cap and they don’t have the overall talent Miami has. If it does come down to these two teams, there is no way Manning shuns Miami to go to Arizona.

    ==================================

I agree that IF these teams were seriously trying to get Manning, they would be his first choice.

The problem is most of those teams are too stupid to go after Manning. They think just because they made the playoffs with their mediocre QBs, that they don’t need an upgrade.

The truth is, most of them made the playoffs DESPITE their QB situation… and an upgrade at QB would definitely make it easier in the future instead of hoping “everything just falls into place” for them again.

The Ravens have unbelievably stated Flacco is their man, and anyone who thinks otherwise is blind(the irony in that statement).

The Jets just extended, though reluctantly, Mark Sanchez.(I think they’d stand a better chance with Jason Campbell or any other random free agent journeyman QB)

The Texans have probably the best current QB of all those teams, and don’t want to ruin a good thing. They just made the playoffs for the first time, and that was with pretty much every single one of their super-stars going down for multiple games with injuries. Mario Williams, Arian Foster, Andre Johnson, Schaub. The list goes on, but those 4 alone… incredible bad luck. I feel Manning is obviously an upgrade, but the Texans should probably be okay without him. Schaub’s a little younger too and already has the chemistry with the team.

Half the reason Peyton would make any team he goes to an immediate contender is because he’s not coming alone. He will be a package deal. It might not be Reggie Wayne… but other free agents will take less to play with this guy. Especially if they are on the offensive side of the ball. Terrell Owens perhaps? You can laugh, but the guy did play pretty well in Cincinnati his last year in the league. And that was with Carson Palmer throwing to him!

Peyton has never had a huge target like a Marcus Colston to throw to. That could be crazy. Vincent Jackson, too… the possibilities are endless. And if Peyton ends up picking his team before free agency starts… his team is the new “dream” destination for all the free agents.

And after Reggie Wayne’s public endorsement of Miami… it’s kind of hard to argue with those that think they will be pulling a Lebron James and will be “taking their talents to South Beach.”

  80. theawkwardyears says: Mar 11, 2012 5:42 AM

I’ve never read such a load of rubbish. All the haters on here need to “go take a hike”. No one has any idea where he wants to go, so don’t try and guess.
All writing theories of why or why not he would go to Denver, Arizona or Miami.
Just wait and see and get on with life, you will know soon enough. He probably is making it up as he goes, and that’s his business and no one else’s.
One place he won’t be going is the Jets, after giving
Sanchez all that money. Hope he plays better than last season!!

I understand he is going to sign with Denver because he does not want to play in cold weather.

I understand he is going to sign with Miami because he does not want to play all his divisional road games in cold weather.

I understand he is going to sign with Miami because he prefers to play in a dome.

“If he signs with Miami in the East, he will need to compete with the Jest and Patriots”

Please… the jests are no competition and the lilly livered pats fans fear is showing.

    MANNING IN MIAMI!

One would think Peyton is Otto Graham, Johnny Unitas, Joe Monatana and Terry Bradshaw all rolled into on. Hey, I love the guy but isn’t the media chase just a bit overdone for a guy coming off neck surgeries? The media overkill is insane.

All this talk an nobody knows if he can even throw a pass with accuracy and velocity as yet. How desperate are all these teams. Irsay knows his condition better than anybody. I don’t think the waiver was about money. The waiver was about coming all the way back and how well will the neck fusions hold up.

Manning will go with the team that he thinks can best give him another shot at the super bowel. It will be as simple as that. But good teams in playoff shape already have a good quarterback. So Manning will be left to decide which of the teams that want him are close enough that he can lift them. That is a tough decision.

I hope the fates are with him but its probably going to be a long shot where ever he goes. He is good but how many trophies does he have, eh?
