In compensatory terms, the players you sign as free agents off sets what you lose in free agency, regardless of what kind of money they sign for (minimum salary players excluded). So if the Vikings signed more free agents they would have lost the 3rd & 4th round picks they are likely to get for losing S Rice & R Edwards.

Since they also didn’t have a lot of cap space last off season it was wiser to get the valuable draft picks instead. This year is completely different in players lost and cap space, so they should try to add a few very good young vets.

His body is failing him and because of that, factored with his age (36) and his skills have eroded. Can he still play? sure. But not at a high level. His shoulder is destroyed and he has off season surgery on it to prop him up long enough to play through the season, then he has surgery again. not to mention his last two seasons ended on injured reserve with concussions. love the guy, but he is pretty much at the end of the road. as for Anthony Hererra, he was a decent run blocking guard, but his knees are done. he was average at best, even when healthy. vikes need to draft kalil, move Charlie Johnson inside, and draft a guard or sign Carl Nicks, Ben Grubbs, or Evan Mathis

4th and on: Draft LB, OL, S and BPA

FA
Try and get Vincent Jackson and Hicks

Vikes will be a better team with all that, and then be in posistion in two years to make a leap to the play-offs and beyond. It doesn’t take much to turn things around quickly in the NFL. And dumping these guy’s is a start. Hutch and Griff will be missed good quality people and players in their prime.
