Dolphins still in play for Peyton

Buffalo Bills v Miami Dolphins Getty Images

Contrary to the Scheftersen report from Sunday that the Broncos and Cardinals have emerged as the leaders for the services of Peyton Manning, our pal Armando Salguero of the Miami Herald reports that the Dolphins are still very much alive.

Specifically, Salguero reports (citing two teams sources) that the Dolpins are in “lockdown” mode, and that the organization believes there’s still a shot at landing Manning.

But Peyton still has not met with the Dolphins, and there’s no specific indication yet that he will.

And there’s no guarantee he will decide after meeting with owner Stephen Ross and G.M. Jeff Ireland and head coach Joe Philbin that the right pieces are in place to allow the Dolphins with Manning to overcome the Patriots with Tom Brady and Bill Belichick.

Peyton knows from his time in Indy how difficult it is going against the Pats and Brady/Belichick combo. I can only imagine he would have to be incredibly sold to consider going there where (1) they are in his division, and (2) he has to play them twice a year instead of the customary one time with the Colts.

If the Dolphins can’t sign Peyton Manning then it truly shows the state of the franchise which is very bleak for Dolphin fans.

I feel certain that Peyton will at least visit the Dolphins, and I still wouldn’t be shocked if he wound up playing in Miami.

The Denver thing is bizarre and totally unexpected. To me, anyway.

And I find it hard to believe that the Cards are giving up on Kolb so quickly. He may not be the franchise QB yet, but good grief.

Not to mention there’s no guarantee that Peyton is healthy.

    —-

You’re missing the point. It’s not whether the Pats are the greatest, it’s how difficult it would be to win the division over them. Failing to do that would result in a guaranteed-tough road through the playoffs, tougher in the AFC than in the NFC (see: NY Giants).

My guess is that Manning is looking for the team with the best shot at winning its division. Miami could do that, but to knowingly go up against the team with possibly the strongest lock on its division ever wouldn’t be easy.

  18. brownsclown says: Mar 12, 2012 8:56 AM

Manning looks old in the picture. I can see why teams want to see him throw!

  19. xpensivewinos says: Mar 12, 2012 8:56 AM

…..probably won’t get Manning………Flynn could go to Seattle and theoretically, Cleveland could draft Tannehill with the 4th pick.

Certainly a possible scenario where Miami has no chair when the music stops.

I wonder what that next banner is going to say that flies over Miami?????

Peyton has only a few years left to win. Why would he go to a team that sucks as bad as the Dolphins?

  23. ldogg62677 says: Mar 12, 2012 8:59 AM

If the Phins don’t land him it doesn’t mean the franchise is bad. Who wouldn’t want a wide out like Fitzgerald to throw too? In all seriousness Miami would be ideal because of the weather, he has a home here, he would have Marshall and Bush to throw too. It’ll be interesting!

  24. wryly1 says: Mar 12, 2012 9:01 AM

If Denver signs Manning, will Broncos fans do a ‘Tebow’?

  25. FinFan68 says: Mar 12, 2012 9:04 AM

The Dolphins have talent. What they have lacked is leadership. Peyton brings that in spades. His on-field leadership would prevent many of the late game collapses of the last few years. Their record has not been good but that team has played tough. The division is absolutely winnable for the Dolphins with Manning at QB. They have a good defense and their offense would be very dangerous with a more accurate passer leading the charge.

The owner comes across as a buffoon simply because of the Harbaugh and Fisher failures and his starstruck attitude. He has proven he wants to win and has not been cheap. Ireland is not as bad as his reputation. There are some talented young players on the dolphins.

  26. buffalohogan says: Mar 12, 2012 9:04 AM

As a Bills fan, I hope they don’t go after Flynn holding out for Peyton and then they lose out on both. That would be great! The Dolphins would be left holding Marino’s sack.

  27. spedman24 says: Mar 12, 2012 9:06 AM

    @cakemixa, yea me too haha.

yeah Miami your getting manning, just stand pat till all the other qb’s are signed…

  28. ogarcz says: Mar 12, 2012 9:12 AM

  29. 3yardsndust says: Mar 12, 2012 9:14 AM

And Rick Santorum thinks he’s still in play for the White House.

  30. wannstache says: Mar 12, 2012 9:17 AM

He is not going to sign with the Dolphins. A sure sign is that Dan Marino is not going out of his way to encourage his friend Peyton to come here. This speaks volumes about Ross, Ireland and crew. If Dan thought the organization was well run and built to win, he would actively recruit him. Don’t think for a minute that Peyton hasn’t already spoken with Dan to get his honest opinion of the organization.

  31. promickey says: Mar 12, 2012 9:18 AM

Arizona may not be able to sign Reggie Wayne after Manning. Moreover three Denver Broncos are going to be suspended for part of the season. This really has to play out!

I seriously doubt Manning is deterred from facing the Jets and Pats twice a year. If anything, he wants to know where he stands as a quarterback and doesn’t want to be handed a playoff berth with weak teams like the Cardinals and the Broncos. With Miami he will get a top 5 defense, top 5 receiver, multi purpose back in Bush and a chance to play with Wayne again who wants to play in Miami badly. All we know is that Manning met with Denver and Arizona to gauge the interest level and doesn’t want to make any decisions or his agent would have joined him. He would get paid the most in Miami, have the best offense out of the 3 teams, play more in primetime games and play in the best weather outside of a dome. Miami should draft a lineman to show serious intent on protecting Manning. I just can’t see Arizona beating out the 49ers for that division regardless of how much better the Cardinals get. The Broncos play in frigid weather and have little talent to support Peyton’s play calling. Just face it, Ross may be a little of a gambler but he needs to in order to erase the mistakes of Huizenga when they didn’t draft for crap in the past. I don’t like Ireland that much, but his drafts have been spot on (exception of QB’s) since they have had better draft than most to include the Patriots who can’t seem to find starters from their past few drafts.

Without hesitation, the Dolphins could easily get a wild card berth or squeak out the division title this year without Peyton, but with him, skies the limit.

It’s easy to label the Fish as poorly managed but Parcells set back that franchise 5 years with Sparano and Henning calling plays. Just think, the Jets will be kicking more field goals this year.

“mikebe1″ You make it sound like it’s easy winning the Super Bowl. Since 2000, there are 25 teams (of 32) that haven’t won it! You have to first get there and the Patriots have won the AFC East 10 times since BB became coach in 2000 and. In 2008 they actually tied for the division lead with a backup quarterback after Brady was injured in the first game, but the Dolphins won the tie-breaker. So, please, how long do you – and other haters – intend to use Spygate? Name another team that is more consistent year-after-year during the Belichick era. The Patriots NEVER rebuild, they re-arm. And, by the way, they are one of the youngest teams in the league and have two first and two second round draft choices in 2012. So, they should get even better. I’ll be waiting.

I just read the Salguero article.

He readily admits that his belief that the Dolphins are still in the hunt is based upon virtually nothing. He almost seems to be making fun of how meager his own information is.

I’m still thinking Denver, with Miami getting Flynn.

mikebe1: “Yes because the patriots are the greatest….but yet still haven’t won a super bowl since spygate.”

@mikebe1 Get your facts straight. The Pats haven’t won a Superbowl since the 2005, but yet have been to two of them since and during spygate. The only other team to do so is the Pittsburgh Steelers who have been to 3 in that time frame, so I’m not really sure what you are trying to imply, although I suspect a response of something along the lines of “Cuz they r CHEATERS! AND I HATE THEM” How many have your Dolphins been in the last 25 years? Zero. Keep listening to Hootie and the Blowfish and singing the praises of Reggie Bush. We all know Reggie is a Class Act.

  44. emaimo80 says: Mar 12, 2012 9:34 AM

Peyton has been a smokescreen all along! Dolphins admitted they have not even reached out to manning. Matt Flynn and Philbin have had a deal in place before Philbin even signed with the Dolphins. Nobody from the dolphins organization can admit to this fact as it would violate the leagues tampering policy. Dolphin fans don’t worry, this is the best possible long term solution. Forget about Peyton, He is too much of a risk! Remember he is 36 and had 4 neck procedures in the last 19 months, besides that he will take up the rest of our salary cap.

  45. orthomarine says: Mar 12, 2012 9:39 AM

The longer this goes on, the less I want to see him in a Dolphins uniform. I think I figured it out though; Ross is going to try to pull off a Nigerian buy back.

They get Manning and then trade him back to Indy for their first and second round picks. This way they land Luck and can add to the O-line.

  48. mackie66 says: Mar 12, 2012 9:56 AM

Best news for the Dolphins Ive heard in sometime. Old, injured, QBs is not what the Dolphins need, and what franchise QB would sign with the laughing stock of the NFL? Flynn might think twice before signing with the Fish. Maybe a draftee but you never know.
The Dolphins are light years away from any playoff thoughts. Matt Moore is it for now and the Dolphins can win a few games with him. But after boss Ross antics the past two yrs you cant blame QBs for not signing with Miami. Peyton Manning playing for the Dolphins?,,,,yeah right.

  49. jacobslatter says: Mar 12, 2012 9:56 AM

Jennifer Lopez owns an itty bitty part of the team, she needs to take Peyton around this week and show him a real good time you know. Girl already knows how to shake it to make the money she can gain the Manning services by servicing him. Something for TMZ to chomp on.

  50. djteknision1200 says: Mar 12, 2012 9:57 AM

I am still wondering when did Miami say they were interested in Manning? I think the media put Miami in the mix because of Manning having a home in the area and now the fans are going crazy like Miami has failed just like the did when they pursued Harbaugh and Fisher.

  51. cubear34 says: Mar 12, 2012 10:02 AM

Peyton heads west! I’m betting broncos because they have a bunch of cap space and are in an easy division of the AFC, which is easier than the NFC. The only wildcard is the weather in Denver.

Fins need to step up and get their guy for once! With the Heat buying a championship, and the “Miami” Marlins attempting the same, the Fins will continue to slide down the totem pole unless they throw their hat in the ring. Getting Flynn cheaper isn’t a bad alternative though, but Manning will create the buzz Ross wants.
