Levi Brown out in Arizona

New York Giants v Arizona Cardinals Getty Images

Five years after they made him the fifth overall pick in the NFL draft, the Cardinals are sending Levi Brown packing.

ESPN’s Adam Schefter reports that the Cardinals are expected to release Brown, who has started all 16 games at offensive tackle for four straight years. Brown is a dependable starter, but the cap-strapped Cardinals couldn’t justify his $17 million cap number.

When the Cardinals drafted Brown out of Penn State, many Arizona fans wanted them to take Oklahoma running back Adrian Peterson instead. Score one for the fans after Peterson ended up going seventh overall to the Vikings and becoming the best running back in football.

Now Brown becomes an unrestricted free agent, and he’ll be a good pickup for some team.

I’m sure this won’t affect Peyton’s team choice at all, will it Cards fans?

  6. nyyjetsknicks says: Mar 12, 2012 6:09 PM

Well we know he won’t be a Cowboy or Redskin.

  7. jimbobobjr says: Mar 12, 2012 6:09 PM

PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE Steelers, sign him and move Willie the Colon to guard where he may not be 100% worthless.

  8. attyken says: Mar 12, 2012 6:10 PM

He wont be going to the Redskins or Cowboys…lol.

  9. aram42287 says: Mar 12, 2012 6:10 PM

Thank god, this guy is the worst. He’s slow.

  10. objectivenflfan says: Mar 12, 2012 6:11 PM

With the additional $ AZ will get from Skins/Boys debacle, that puts them about level with the cap.

Now they just need to create about $22 million more for Peyton.

And then find a LT who can block for him.

    And then pay that LT.

    I say AZ is out.

  11. banvard316 says: Mar 12, 2012 6:13 PM

Feel free to come back at a price more fitting your skill sets…say a sour dough jack?

  12. bmue42 says: Mar 12, 2012 6:13 PM

welcome to green bay mr brown

  13. myktuggle says: Mar 12, 2012 6:13 PM

Haha. Well said objectivenflfan. Now wish my 9ers would wake up and try to grab Peyton.

Great news for the Redskins!! F U Goodell!

  15. theuglitruth says: Mar 12, 2012 6:16 PM

This guys is horrible…if you haven’t seen him play, I’d reserve your comments. He’s a turnstile.

  16. bbernas says: Mar 12, 2012 6:16 PM

Whether or not they get Peyton this had to happen, Levi Brown is frustratingly bad at times, especially for someone picked before Adrian Peterson and Patrick Willis.

  17. jgava19 says: Mar 12, 2012 6:17 PM

    Making room for Peyton.

  18. chocolatebaconbutter says: Mar 12, 2012 6:18 PM

Obviously quite a few people on here have not watched much of Levi. He’s just not good. Whoever signs him be prepared for disappointment. Tons is sacks and even more false start penalties. Many times he was the weakest link of that line, and that’s saying something. Good riddance.

  19. drumsomeone says: Mar 12, 2012 6:20 PM

If you can’t play with him in AZ, you might as well come to Denver and play with him.

  20. banvard316 says: Mar 12, 2012 6:20 PM

I can’t believe fans of other teams want him…lol wow that says a lot about other teams o lines I guess. He’s good for 2 false starts at every home game and giving up a bunch of sacks…have fun!

  21. nineroutsider says: Mar 12, 2012 6:23 PM

Damn, going to be harder to edge rush the redbirds now…

  22. navysully says: Mar 12, 2012 6:23 PM

As a Cards fan…. why would anyone want him on their team!? This guy is TERRIBLE. A cardboard cut out is better. Seriously, you team is better by NOT signing him.

  23. sagatti says: Mar 12, 2012 6:23 PM

Welcome to DENVER!!! Can you say DEEP POCKETS and you will play on the other side of Ryan Clady… How does that sound protecting Mr. Manning?

  24. mianfr says: Mar 12, 2012 6:25 PM

Well, he can’t be worse than stalwart Jets RT Wayne Hunter…

The question is whether he’d be cheaper.

  25. arizonahusker says: Mar 12, 2012 6:30 PM

One of the worse LT’s in the game. Jonathan Martin, Reiff (sp) or Adams from OSU are serious upgrades over him.

Look for Porter to go next.

  26. promickey says: Mar 12, 2012 6:31 PM

Wow, so the Arizona Cardinals have dumped their best offensive lineman on a poor offensive line just in time for Peyton Manning to arrive. My guess is that Peyton will not be going to Arizona.

  27. rip4gehrig says: Mar 12, 2012 6:33 PM

in other news the Cardinals fired 4 office workers, 2 water boys and the dude that dresses up as the mascot in a cost cutting move to sign PM.

  28. jagsfanugh says: Mar 12, 2012 6:34 PM

Levi Brown could be used in Jax as they need him.

  29. madmediaman says: Mar 12, 2012 6:36 PM

NFL vice president of officiating Carl Johnson has announced that whichever team signs Bad Bad Levi Brown during free agency will face an automatic false start penalty at the beginning of the seasn.

  30. tangerinediesel says: Mar 12, 2012 6:37 PM

People are hearing 5th round pick and started 16 games thinking this guy is good. It was a forgone conclusion the Cards were going to cut him without a major pay cut. Could easily get an upgrade for a small fraction of the price.

  31. theuglitruth says: Mar 12, 2012 6:39 PM

This guys is completely worthless. Gave up over 100 yards in sacks last year and 50 penalty yards….and that was his “contract” year play.

  32. buckingnutz says: Mar 12, 2012 6:40 PM

You are all uneducated football fans, are you serious, you want this guy??? Maybe, if you move him to gaurd. Oh and our best lineman??? Geez, please do some research before you post. Look up the worst LT in the NFL and I guarentee you Levi is #1. We have been planning to cut this guy for sometime now.

  33. arizonahusker says: Mar 12, 2012 6:44 PM

Levi Brown is NOT the best Cardinal Lineman. Sendlein, Cooledge are that.

They do need to get better Olineman, that is for sure. But, beside Saturday, name me another Pro Bowl Olineman from his days at the Colts?

Jonathan Martin … come on down to Arizona.

  34. texansmike says: Mar 12, 2012 6:49 PM

AZ is in a great spot to draft a left tackle or Guard (Decastro). Good football move for them cap wise.

  35. sporadiclee says: Mar 12, 2012 6:49 PM

Dependable starter? If you mean depending on him to miss a man coming free off the edge at least three times a game, I agree. Levi Brown grades out as one of the worst OTs every year, if not the worst. Solid run blocker. Horrid pass blocker. One of the worst I’ve ever seen.

  36. micbg77 says: Mar 12, 2012 6:53 PM

Just what the Bills need…except you cannot over pay for a guy like this! While solid, he’s not great.

  37. drindt says: Mar 12, 2012 6:55 PM

First of a few the Cards need to cut in order to create cap room for Peyton pitch. I personally would not be suprised to see Fitz and possibly a few others take a paycut to get Manning there… Fitz deserves a quarterback as talented as Manning. Those who dont believe that are just pleading the 5th.

  38. lincspop says: Mar 12, 2012 7:12 PM

This guy is without a doubt the worst tackle in football. this was a no brainer for any Cards fan. I am sure Peyton was told when he was there that this would happen too. He was the chairman of the welcoming commitee for any pass rusher. Peyton needs better than that. Any of the top 4 or 5 tackles in the draft are an upgrade here.

  39. dcoppola76 says: Mar 12, 2012 7:12 PM

Hey Vikes pick this guy up,trade a few spots back and draft Claiborn & Stephen Hill

  40. joecb91 says: Mar 12, 2012 7:17 PM

Why do any of you guys want to sign him? He was AWFUL!!!

  41. sawyerfamilyaz says: Mar 12, 2012 7:27 PM

This just shows how little fans pay attention to other team’s linemen and trust what they read. Levi Brown is going to get signed for about $6 million a year by some desperate team. He will then proceed to shuffle his feet poorly and give up pressure after sack after pressure, all in between jumping for a false start over and over. Meanwhile, the Cards will take Reiff or Martin in the draft and be so much better off.

  42. madesian says: Mar 12, 2012 8:44 PM

  43. b3astm0de says: Mar 12, 2012 9:46 PM

  44. rajbais says: Mar 12, 2012 10:06 PM

MDS, LaCanfora got this DAYS before Schefter did!!!!

Don’t you read your own site???

  45. bigkudubull says: Mar 12, 2012 10:53 PM

Wow, these comments about Brown from fans around the league are really inexplicable to me. I had no idea there was such a hot market for an overpaid, underacheiving, penalty-prone OL who routinely misses his blocks and gives up huge numbers of sacks. As someone who has watched Levi Brown for years with great frustration, I really can’t believe that other teams are salivating at the chance to sign him. This guy has been a major bust and a huge dissappointment in AZ, but if y’all want him, more power to you. And good luck. You’ll need it. Levi Brown is at or near the top of the league in false start penalties every year. He’s just plain dumb.

  46. tombreck says: Mar 13, 2012 6:18 AM

For the record, the comments on all these items that are, “welcome to _______ Levi Brown” are so limp wristed. Stop it, it’s not funny and not unique. Just limp wristed.

  47. westcoastredbird says: Mar 13, 2012 5:08 PM

A dependable starter and a good pickup for some team. Are you smoking crack? Have you seen the man with the teflon hands play? Ask Kevin Kolb and John Skelton how dependable he is as a blocker. Levi don’t let the door hit you in the ass on your way out the door. I want to see which team is stupid enough to sign the “Teflon Man”! You better sign Usain Bolt to play QB while you’re at it.
