Payton, Benson meeting with Goodell on Monday

Saints coach Sean Payton and owner Tom Benson have extended their stay in New York. And they’re not doing it to second-act Jersey Boys.

Steve Wyche of NFL Network reports that Payton and Benson met with the league over the weekend, and that Payton and Benson are meeting with Commissioner Roger Goodell and NFL security on Monday.

Many expect Payton to be suspended by the league, given that he knew about the bounty system and did nothing to stop it. Benson faces no discipline, because the league has concluded he knew nothing about the bounties. However, the Saints face fines and the loss of draft picks.

The league has determined that the Saints violated the league’s bounty rules for three years. No timetable has been set for a final decision on punishment. On Sunday, Jim Thomas of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reported that the Rams expect a decision within a week.
