Spending 10% of their salary cap on a player that might not be able to play a single game for the chance at upgrading the passing game is hugely retarded. Too risky for them. They are already contenders.

This move only makes mathmatical sense for a team that can’t reasonably contend without a huge QB upgrade.

Yes the 49ers would be insanely scary with a healthy Manning. But they are already arguably the 2nd or 3rd best team in football. If they take Peyton and he fails they don’t even make the playoffs. Too risky.

If Manning can get past having to stick it to the Colts twice a year, this is the absolute PERFECT match. Dome team, same division, great running game, great WR talent, solid D.

Sign it now, Peyton. Do it!

Why would that be a stretch? Texans made it to divisional round with a third string QB. Niners barely lost in the NFC title game.

I would think both teams would be a lot stronger. Texans would most definitely be head of the line in the weak AFC.

And as a football fan, I sure hope he goes to a team that deserves him like the Texans.

While it would be nice to see if he can pretty much carry an entire team of scrubs by himself like he did in Indy… I’d rather see another team there to compete so the Patriots aren’t gifted another trip to the Super Bowl on the AFC side.

With a healthy Peyton Manning? It’s not a stretch–certainly not for the Texans. Good grief, look what they accomplished last season with a third-string QB! If they hadn’t lost Schaub, I think they would have represented the AFC in the Super Bowl.

But no one has seen Peyton throw … and we have to wonder why? Considering how well they’re doing with Schaub and Smith, do the Texans and 49ers want to gamble what’s not broken on a QB who might not be able to perform?

All I have heard on the matter is SF’s front office explicitly stating they’re aren’t interested in Manning, and working hard to resign Alex before the start of free agency.

No one knows what Peyton is thinking. It’s even more apparent after the events today.

He is only go with one team. And everywhere this guy goes the confidence in the existing QB with his franchise plummets.

People need to be smarter about this than they seem to have been up to this point.

What if the Texans don’t get him? (Which they won’t, because their cap situation makes it higly improbable).

Yes, Manning would be an upgrade, but he also has the same agent as Alex Smith (who is also a free agent). If Niners sign Manning, they almost automatically lose Alex. If Manning gets hurt or can’t play at all, they are completely screwed. The Niners can’t even keep interest in Manning a secret from Smith because, again, they have the same agent.

Of course I’d like to see the Niners make a play, but the logistics of it just don’t make any sense.
