Previously, the Texans had said they have no interest in Manning. Their interest possibly has been sparked by the Titans’ interest. If nothing else, the Texans need to make it look like they tried to get Peyton, in the event he ends up with the Titans and lead them to the AFC South title.
***********************************************

By that logic then shouldn't the Charger's inquire also as Peyton has visited the Bronco's and the Chief's have expressed interest ???!!!! Nobody knows anything until Peyton signs a contract. LOL

49ers took the SB champs to overtime in the NFC Championship game during the first season with a new system. Their goal is to get one play better than last season.

Spending 10% of their salary cap on a player that might not be able to play a single game for the chance at upgrading the passing game is hugely retarded. Too risky for them. They are already contenders.

This move only makes mathmatical sense for a team that can't reasonably contend without a huge QB upgrade.

Yes the 49ers would be insanely scary with a healthy Manning. But they are already arguably the 2nd or 3rd best team in football. If they take Peyton and he fails they don't even make the playoffs. Too risky.

When the guy who's been single-handedly blocking your path to a division title is suddenly playing QB on your team, you've definitely made a major upgrade to your team.

If Manning can get past having to stick it to the Colts twice a year, this is the absolute PERFECT match. Dome team, same division, great running game, great WR talent, solid D.

Sign it now, Peyton. Do it!

“Either team would instantly become the odds-on favorite to win their conference championship with a healthy Peyton in the fold.”

That may be a stretch.

Why would that be a stretch? Texans made it to divisional round with a third string QB. Niners barely lost in the NFC title game.

I would think both teams would be a lot stronger. Texans would most definitely be head of the line in the weak AFC.

This is more like it. Truth is, any team that doesn't have Brady, Brees, or Rodgers SHOULD be inquiring about Peyton Manning.

And as a football fan, I sure hope he goes to a team that deserves him like the Texans.

While it would be nice to see if he can pretty much carry an entire team of scrubs by himself like he did in Indy... I'd rather see another team there to compete so the Patriots aren't gifted another trip to the Super Bowl on the AFC side.

With a <em>healthy</em> Peyton Manning? It's not a stretch--certainly not for the Texans. Good grief, look what they accomplished last season with a third-string QB! If they hadn't lost Schaub, I think they would have represented the AFC in the Super Bowl.

But no one has seen Peyton throw ... and we have to wonder why? Considering how well they're doing with Schaub and Smith, do the Texans and 49ers want to gamble what's not broken on a QB who might not be able to perform?

I thought the Texans, Niners, and Ravens should've been the first 3 teams in line from the get-go. I think Peyton will end up in Houston; and that they'll get a championship within the next 2 years. So glad the Texans finally stepped up. I really didn't want to see him go to Denver or Arizona; where he probably wouldn't get another legit shot at a Super Bowl.

Can someone direct me to a credible source that says the 49ers are pursuing Manning?

All I have heard on the matter is SF's front office explicitly stating they're aren't interested in Manning, and working hard to resign Alex before the start of free agency.

Major smokescreen, I guess?

" If nothing else, the Texans need to make it look like they tried to get Peyton, in the event he ends up with the Titans and lead them to the AFC South title."

If teams REALLY think like this they are dumb, IMO. It's one thing to float a rumor out there about interest or something but to have real actual time devoted to elaborate smokescreens to please fans is silly. Teams should think ONLY of what's good for THEIR TEAM in THEIR SITUATION with their specific circumstances...not be reactionary like that which is a waste of everyone's time.

Teams need to savvy up to the possibility of ruining their rapport with their existing QBs just by publicly thinking about Peyton Manning.

He is only go with one team. And everywhere this guy goes the confidence in the existing QB with his franchise plummets.

People need to be smarter about this than they seem to have been up to this point.

What if the Texans don't get him? (Which they won't, because their cap situation makes it higly improbable).

With what face are they going to go back to Matt Schaub?

I don't know why the 49ers keep getting mentioned.

Yes, Manning would be an upgrade, but he also has the same agent as Alex Smith (who is also a free agent). If Niners sign Manning, they almost automatically lose Alex. If Manning gets hurt or can't play at all, they are completely screwed. The Niners can't even keep interest in Manning a secret from Smith because, again, they have the same agent.

Of course I'd like to see the Niners make a play, but the logistics of it just don't make any sense.
