Source: Broncos didn’t hear from Manning on Sunday

AP

A pair of tweets from Vic Lombardi of CBS4 in Denver raised plenty of eyebrows on Sunday night, when Lombardi said:  (1) that the Broncos are “95% confident” that they’ll land Peyton Manning; and (2) that the Broncos have that confidence because they heard from Manning on Sunday night.

ESPN’s Chris Mortensen responded with a tweet that seemed to be more of an exercise in word-parsing, pointing out that “Manning didn’t call team today or tonight & inform they’re 95% fave.”  This potentially means that Manning did indeed call, but that Manning didn’t tell the Broncos they are 95 percent likely to land him.

We can now make this a little more clear, at least as it relates to the Broncos’ position.  Per a source with knowledge of the situation, the Broncos contend that they didn’t hear from Peyton at all on Sunday.

Whether he actually did or didn’t call, and whether the Broncos are concealing that he called as part of their broader respect for the process, aren’t known.  But, per the source, the Broncos’ story is that Manning didn’t call.

Of course, the Broncos nevertheless may be “95% confident” that they’ll get Manning.

  1. As a lifelong Colts fan, I am obviously very interested where Peyton goes but to fans of teams that aren’t the Colts, Broncos, Cardinals, or Dolphins, this has gotta be annoying. It seems like 3 out of 4 headlines on this site are Manning related.

  2. The more chatter about Broncos/Manning there is, the less likely it is he ends up there. That’s how it usually works out.

  3. Favre watch was fun and unpredictable. Manning watch is bland and workmanlike. To be expected, I suppose. But the irony is that Favre was probably a healthier prospect, and a better bet to play well if he returned to the game than Payments is.

  4. You can’t call back the day after the first date! I adhere to a strict 48 hour policy, for fear of coming off too desperate.

  5. If Peyton goes to Denver, this will be his last year. Denver’s O-line is questionable to say the least. Not that any players have ever tried to put a QB out of a game, but some players may target the area of his surgery. Besides, he wants to get another SB ring to match his little brother. K.C. is a better choice.

  6. Well i sure hope for his sake thats not true. I kinda hope he goes to Miami for his sake. I would love to see him play with Brandon Marshal one of the best WRs in the league (better then Fitz IMO) I’m an Eagles fan so I dont have any real preference, I just think Miami is the best reasonable fit.

  7. Why are people complaining about Peyton coverage? Usually the few days before free agency are slow news days – couple that with Peyton being possibly the face of the league….It deserves the coverage…As for him leaning towards the Broncos – I’m puzzled. I think Arizona and Miami has more proven talent across the board. Denver has some talent as well, dont get me wrong…This is way interesting – Go Peyton!

  8. Denver’s o line is in the top 10 in the League. They kept McGahee relevant and made a bad QB a playoff winner last season. Peyton is a great fit there. Good, young receivers. Good defense. Defensive HC, and a no name OC. I’m gonna make it 99% that he’s a Bronco! Plus it’s as far away from NFC East as possible. So Archie will allow him to play there.

  9. One good hit and he’s gone. Tebow is gone. Like Tebow or not, he’s the best they have now. Elway has shown he is dishonest, so what qb would want to play there? “Tim Tebow is not going anywhere. I’m going to work with him in the offseason.” Liar.

  10. All we hear about is Peyton Manning !……..Is he the face of the whole NFL ?….Nobody even knows if he can pass a physical or play…. as of yet !!!

  11. Since Peyton didn’t call the Broncos, they should stalk him. Call his parents and brothers and just harass them until he calls them back.

Actually it’s about a 50/50 split between Manning and headlines about how the cry baby losers in MN had a Lombardi stole from them vie a league wide conspiracy.

  13. The article says Peyton didn’t call Sunday. Maybe he called sooner or perhaps he emailed or texted. Even mailed his response (LOL). Let’s get it going. Other teams are waiting to see what they’re doing at the QB (once Manning is off the market). His decision couldn’t come fast enough.

    Go Niners!

  14. Yo John-Peyton here-just calling to see if you found a taker for the kid yet? Just let me know when you get a deal for him and I will call you back. Thanks for dinner the other night.

  15. No news out there in the NFL except Peyton??!

um… i’m convinced the SAINTS paid Peyton 24 million just to take the attention off ‘Bounty Gate!”

Marshall better than Fitz?? Good lord man..do you watch football much?

  17. Peyton doesn’t seem like a guy that would like to be involved with all the drama surrounding the departure of Tebow if he signs with the Broncos.

  18. This Bronco fan don’t want him no how. He be too old. He “might” give the horses a better chance than the praying Tebow for a couple years, but even that is debatable. If Manning was anywhere close to the player he once was, don’t you think the Colts would have tried to renegotiate his contract? If he’s not his former self, then he isn’t gonna make that much difference anyway so they might as well give the Tebow kid another year. Rivers, Rogers, Young and many others did not start for several years, so there’s no reason to think Tebow can’t get better too.

  19. Media is speculating as usual, say they have ‘sources’-it’s called imagination.

From the beginning there were 3 potential visits. The first 2 highly visable, only started Friday afternoon. Not like he’s flying on the Concord and can get across the country in half an hour.

Teams are busy signing contracts, slashing players off rosters. Coordinating these visits means alot of people have to be available plus the private jet clearing flight plans.

You can bet Miami has scheduled a visit. They are not announcing it to avoid media stalking. That’s not exactly a selling feature. It’s invasive and annoying.

Maybe Manning would enjoy a few hours with his family before heading into the circus again.

With salary cap figures posted, Arizona is OVER and Denver substantially under. Miami under as well. A Manning decision by 4:00 Tuesday would be appreciated by Arizona if they plan to clear more space.

Peyton wants to get back on his rehab program, rather than flying all over the country. He seems determined to make a choice and get to work immediately.

Now the Titans owner has entered the fray (kind of late but with a lot of benefits). There’s only 24 hours in a day and Peyton is back in Miami. He’ll need tonite and Tuesday to weigh the pros and cons. Tick tock. Tick tock!

  20. People just don’t get that it’s not about money for Manning, & the Broncos have plenty of cap space to sign,Manning, Reggie Wayne, Dallas Clark and a couple more players that Manning sees fit. As a Bronco fan I am on the fence as to what I would like to see. I said from the start that I believe in Tebow, but I also know Manning is better. It’s a tough spot to be in as a fan…
