Vikings retain backup quarterback Sage Rosenfels

FOX Sports’ Alex Marvez reports that the Vikings have agreed to terms with quarterback Sage Rosenfels, whose contract expired at season’s end.

Details of the deal are unknown. Rosenfels, 34, projects as the team’s third-stringer behind Christian Ponder and Joe Webb.

Rosenfels has appeared in 44 career games, making 12 starts. His career record is 6-6. Rosenfels has thrown 30 touchdown passes compared to 29 interceptions. His career completion rate is 62.5.

Though the Vikings added a “camp arm” when they signed McLeod Bethel-Thompson to a reserve/future deal in January, the Rosenfels move likely solidifies Minnesota’s quarterback depth chart for the 2012 season.

Viking fans are jumping with joy that Sage (the franchise) Rosenfels resigned with the team.

Good.. now that this situation is taken care of we can move on to the draft. HAHA who cares, he won’t see the field and how much of a coaching help can a guy be who only played in a few games. Ponder has more starting experience than Rosenfels.

  3. billsfaninmiami says: Mar 12, 2012 3:00 PM

    Sure… That’s a good move.
Ponder has a big upside and having a veteran helping him along will make him – and Webb – better.
Now let’s work the RB situation.

    well
he’s a solid backup, so thats good
and chillis not there to piss him off, which is also good

  6. fijabbersman345 says: Mar 12, 2012 3:04 PM

Good move. Sage is a perfect backup because he’s a veteran, but he’s not a Donovan McNabb “I want to play so start me” type of guy. He’ll be a good presence for Ponder and Webb in the long run.

    Those stats are Favre-like!

Just think what they would be like if he had played for teams that refused to bench him his whole career!

It’s good to read that the Vikings quarterback depth chart is “solidified”. Now I can sleep at night.

Part of me hopes Sage wins the job through competition. I’d like to see what he could do with the opportunity. I still feel the Vikings reached drafting Ponder as their first pick last year. Ponder needs to shake the injury bug and the happy feet.

    Championship

  13. kosarsmyidol says: Mar 12, 2012 3:19 PM

I understand that the Vikings have two young, developing quarterbacks on the roster in Ponder and Webb, but Rosenfels could be #2 elsewhere. He’s at the point in his career where he’s not clamoring to unseat the starter. The Vikings were smart to lock him up before he became an unrestricted free agent.

  14. fijabbersman345 says: Mar 12, 2012 3:19 PM

    @vikesfansteve

If you think they’re signing Sage for a starting job you’re in for a harsh wake up call. Give the kid an o-line and some targets and then start judging, jesus

Does anyone remember Madden a few years ago when forwhatever reason he always turned out to blosssom into an QB that was over 90 overall?

  16. canonroad says: Mar 12, 2012 3:22 PM

Gotta feel for the guy….was always a ‘serviceable,’ back-up in Houston. Then traded for and acquired because Childress loved the guy. Then the Farve happened. When Farve happens…there is no un-happen-ing?

  17. derfshambeaux says: Mar 12, 2012 3:26 PM

He looks like a drug abusing Brett Favre in that picture.

What’s that? I have to be more specific? Ok.

He looks like a meth-addicted Brett Favre in that picture.

34? In that picture he looks more like 54…

  21. agelardi says: Mar 12, 2012 3:49 PM

Geez, he looks more like 54 than 34 in the picture.

no, chili did NOT like the guy, it was Spielman who wanted Rosenfels. chili was albout Favre & TJack, thus the reason Rosenfels never got a fair shake in MN. Chili basically killed his career by having him on roster & never letting him play, b4 Favre chili was all bout T Jacks developement

  23. thingamajig says: Mar 12, 2012 3:52 PM

Great news. I was afraid the Vikes would have to go after Manning if they couldn’t get Sage signed.

    ____________

They traded for Rosenfels because Spielman loved him. They traded him and their punt returner away for a bag of practice balls because Childress loved T-Jack despite his inability to complete a pass during the entire preseason.

Well, inlight of the news that they are keeping Sage,Maybe there setting up a trade, And As part of that said trade are offering Webb as part of the deal? Just food for thought!

  29. burgundyandgold says: Mar 12, 2012 4:19 PM

Sage has made more than $20 million dollars in his career – that’s nuts.

  30. bigbluefan1 says: Mar 12, 2012 4:34 PM

NO buddy in the history of the NFL has held a clip board better then Sage

This man has the world buy the short and curly’s 20 Mil lifetime to carry a clip board hell when this guy was on the Giants he was on the IR must have fell in tunnel walking the sidelines

What a racket this guy has

And the Vikes are set now for the next decade with Sage on the clip board

  31. deconjonesbitchslap says: Mar 12, 2012 4:41 PM

oh man! if our sub-mediocre QB has to come out of the game, we can replace him with 2 more sub-mediocre qb’s!

  32. zn0rseman says: Mar 12, 2012 4:45 PM

Rosenfels is a better passing QB than Joe Webb, so yeah, most Viking fans are happy with this move.

Seriously, the Vikings are WASTING Joe Webb’s outrageous athletic abilities trying to play him at QB. He doesn’t have the arm or throwing accuracy to be decent at the NFL level.

Please, please move him to WR where he can actually be productive!

  33. gmen1987 says: Mar 12, 2012 4:51 PM

I remembered when the Vikings got Rosenfels from the Texans and all the Sage fangirls thought he was such a great QB. Even career 3rd stringer QBs in the NFL have fangirls.

Cool, a story about a backup quarterback with a 6-6 overall record.

Also, I love how guys are saying “Oh he’s a good backup because he’s a veteran”. Yes he’s a veteran, but he’s a veteran who has only started 12 games and only managed to win half of the those.

  36. vikefan says: Mar 13, 2012 9:53 AM

yes the vikes are wasting joe webbs athletic ability, the problem is there is no place to put him, if he could actually catch they would have put him at wr past 2 or 3 years, its obvious he cannot catch (aks troy williamson), thats why he stays at qb, i think this is just another sign of organizational ineptness that has been wasting a roster spot for 4 years. if he has the ability to do something, put him in a position to use that athletic ability, if not then try a trade, there are enuff holes on this roster to pick up a valuable draft pick or up and coming star instead of wasting away a roster spot that does not get used to full potential…..and i have always wondered with his speed why webb is not used in the return game at all, must be the hands.

I seem to recall that your ‘g-men’ traded a nice draft pick among a multi-player trade to the Vikings to get Rosenfels after Favre arrived. There was a lot of happiness in NY at that point. Sage was a pretty hot commodity back then. He and Tarvaris Jackson have much in common. And congrats on making up the ‘fangirls’ thing. Nobody’s ever used that one before. Clever you. Run along and enjoy your championship. It’s almost time for recess!
