With move likely, Dwight Freeney hires an agent

Dwight Freeney, Matt Hasselbeck AP

Dwight Freeney has one more year on his contract and says he wants to stay with the Colts, but he’s made a move that strongly suggests he expects to do something other than play out his existing contract.

Freeney has hired an agency, CAA, Jason La Canfora of NFL Network reports. Freeney had been without an agent for a year since Gary Wichard died.

If Freeney really expected to play one more season at his current salary, there would be no reason to hire a new agent now. Hiring an agent suggests that Freeney thinks he’ll be traded to a team that wants him to sign a new deal, or that he’s planning to renegotiate his current deal with the Colts.

One way or another, the 32-year-old Freeney on his current contract doesn’t appear to be a good fit with the rebuilding Colts. As the Colts continue to shed contract, Freeney’s $14 million base salary will likely be gone soon.

Thank you for signing with us Mr. Freeney. Now from here, you do all the weightlifting, conditioning, football playing, and all the other hard work. We will handle the rest.

Smart move on Freeney’s part. I am going to miss the beast in Indy! :(

Is it just me or do 95% of the action shots of Freeney clearly show him getting held?

When the Colts have the first pick next year, they’ll get more for Barkley than the Rams just got for Griffin III.

I’d love to get Freeney here in Philly. A rotation of Cole, Babin, Freeney and Garham could be nasty.

The Packers could use him–for the right price.

    Freeney and Super Mario.

Your logic that if he was expecting to play out his contract he would have no need to hire an agent is incredibly flawed.

First off, agents often handle much more than contract negotiations, especially firms like CAA. They offer comprehensive career management services- everything from endorsements to financial management. Maybe Freeney just thought he could use those services.

Secondly, there is still the possibility that he could soften his stance on renegotiating and would use an agent to approach the Colts about that or respond to them approaching him.

Not saying he will or won’t be in Indy this year, but taking this as a sure fire indicator that he won’t is a bit of a stretch.

I feel real bad for Andrew Luck, the Colts came in last place without Manning, so their bright idea to get better is to cut everyone (or trade them), I guess they have plans to pick first again next year.
