Bears working to sign free agent Jeremy Mincey

Falcons Jaguars Football AP

The Chicago Bears, by many accounts, were supposed to court free agent defensive end Mario Williams once the market opened on Tuesday. It never happened.

The Bears are, however, pursing free agent defensive end Jeremy Mincey.

Dan Pompei of the Chicago Tribune reports the Bears are “trying to sign” Mincey, who is coming off a breakout year in Jacksonville. Mincey racked up career highs in tackles (57), sacks (eight), and forced fumbles (four) while starting all 16 games for the Jags.

Mincey is 28 years old. In Chicago, he would give the Bears a strong pass-rushing tandem playing opposite Julius Peppers. The Bears are trying to upgrade on left defensive end Israel Idonije, whose contract is up.

I think Mario Williams to Buffalo must be a done deal or else they wouldn’t be working on a backup plan.

Would be great if Mario Williams is taken by bills

They must have said “poor man’s Mario Williams” and the media missed it…

Losing Mincey would take our pass rush from “meh” to “let’s drop 9 in coverage and see if that helps.”

let’s just hope we don’t have Phillip Daniels 2.0 on our hands. he was decent but we heard a lot of the same things when PD was signed.

He’s no Mario, and he’s no proven producer (received the most playing time this year since entering the league), but if he gets pumped, very easy to do in the Chi, then that’s a “cheese sandwich” making tandem with him and Pepp. Go Bears, book your rooms on Bourbon St.!!!!

If you can get this guy on the cheap too, I’d be happy.

I’m not sold on Emrey just yet. He’s made some moves that may pay off quick, but I want to see this guy draft. Nothing is really worse than what Angelo put together, but you could always match.

6 of those sacks came against curtis painter/dan orlovsky, but he was still our best DE, if he walks away, Gene you better get ready for crucifixion, one leged kampman and bunch of east bowling green state nonames wont cut it, IN GENE WE DONT TRUST

Look at his draft record from KC and see if that makes you sleep better. The kid drafts better than 90% of GMs, trust. I’ll take my nephew running the show in the Chi rather than Jerry A. We’ll find out in a month+.

    Da Bears!

Philip Daniels wasn’t that horrible of an end when he was in Chicago. Emery has done a good job, so far, but I agree that his first draft will allow Bears fan to see what vision he has for the team.

Bears are making some good moves. They essentially got a #1 receiver for a cup of coffee and a bag of funyuns. They got a solid backup QB. And getting this kid would be better than paying mario more than they paid peppers. No doubt Williams is better but good and much cheaper will be effective as well. find an o-lineman that fits and draft defensive depth and this team will be one to watch.
