Bills’ free agency plan: Big splash now, out of the market by Friday

Buddy Nix, Chan Gailey AP

The Buffalo Bills won’t be patient in free agency.

Bills General Manager Buddy Nix said this morning that the team is planning to make waves with a free agent signing or two that makes the league take notice, and that once those big deals are done, the Bills will be done and moving on to preparing for the draft.

“We’d like to be out of the business by Friday. The big splash for us could be over in a week,” Nix said on WGR 550, via the Bills’ official Twitter.

Nix said he expects current Bills players to be an important part of recruiting efforts, telling other players around the league that the team is building toward its first playoff appearance in more than a decade.

“I’m excited that players have enough faith in our program that they reach out to their peers to speak well about the Bills,” Nix said.

Nix said there are three or four free agent pass rushers who could make an immediate impact, and he hopes to sign one of them within the next few days, and perhaps fill a few other holes in the roster. And then, as far as the Bills are concerned, free agency will come to an end.

“You have to fill as many needs in free agency since it comes first,” Nix said. “Then you add to your depth in the draft.”

If I’m a front line free agent I’m wondering what the second prize is.

Mario Williams and Martellus Bennett are my guess

    I smell tampering

  4. bigfranky75 says: Mar 13, 2012 10:49 AM

Here in WNY, there is lots of buzz about both VJax and Mario Williams… which means we’ll end up with neither… stinkin Bills always set us fans up for the major disappointment… I hope I’m wrong but I wouldn’t bank on it.

Filling as many needs as you can in free agency is the recipe for success? Huh. Could’ve fooled me, I have been noticing in the last decade teams like the colts, pats, steelers, giants, packers all built nearly exclusively thru the draft. That seems like the right formula, but maybe they should follow the redskins and eagles strategy, who knows?

  6. cannonballdookie says: Mar 13, 2012 10:49 AM

That is always the worst strategy, but I guess they have some glaring needs. It would be great if they get Mario Williams and Vincent Jackson but I doubt it.

The best teams remain patient and let the market play out then get steals later on.

  7. The Unlikely Expat says: Mar 13, 2012 10:50 AM

From a lifelong Bills fan, I hope to God that we get some good free agents. The Bills have been operating on the cheap for so long, and we need some stars on a team filled with role-players.

  8. rabidbillsfan says: Mar 13, 2012 10:51 AM

Wow, That is the smartest thing I have heard a Buffalo GM say in years, I don’t even think half the NFL knows that, and by “that”, I mean the last quote.

  9. will12203 says: Mar 13, 2012 10:51 AM

    Mario and/or Vincent Jackson

  10. trueski21 says: Mar 13, 2012 10:51 AM

too bad they cant bring back thurman thomas and bruce smith

  11. bearsrulepackdrool says: Mar 13, 2012 10:52 AM

Get the right pieces in place and this team could be scary. Add Peyton to the Dolphins and Rex Ryan may need to rethink his yearly guarantees.

  12. mdpickles says: Mar 13, 2012 10:53 AM

LOL @ the Bills. They’ll sign T.O. and Clinton Portis…more like toilet bowl turd splash.

  13. jdandcoke says: Mar 13, 2012 10:53 AM

build the team through free agency and use the draft for depth….sounds like a good plan…not. that is the EXACT opposite of how the super bowl champs (twice in 5 years) do it.

  14. jenniferxxx says: Mar 13, 2012 10:55 AM

I have to agree that this is exactly how teams should play it.

  15. billsfaninmiami says: Mar 13, 2012 10:55 AM

    Did Ralph Wilson die??
Cant believe I’m hearing this kind of chatter in Buffalo!

“We’d like to be out of the business by Friday. The big splash for us could be over in a week,” Nix said

Buddy, first you need a pool, then you can make a splash.

    No money, no splash.

You guys lost four in a row

  18. truthhurtstoo says: Mar 13, 2012 10:57 AM

I’m not sure that high value free agent prospects want to go to Buffalo… however, I do think they will pass the jests and end up in 3rd place this year.

  19. countsnail says: Mar 13, 2012 10:58 AM

My guess is they’re going to throw big money at the two Marios: Williams and Manningham. They need an aggressive pass rusher and a solid #2 WR opposite Stevie Johnson, so these moves would make sense.

  20. wipackman1265 says: Mar 13, 2012 10:59 AM

How about signing Tracey Porter, and an Offensive Lineman and trading for Dwight Freeney ?

  21. muskyhunter2542 says: Mar 13, 2012 10:59 AM

    Matt Flynn

  22. johnnyhambone says: Mar 13, 2012 11:01 AM

Buddy Nix is one of the best when it comes to personnel. The wow factor is about to be unleashed on the nfl community by the one and only buddy nix.

  23. mr3857 says: Mar 13, 2012 11:03 AM

The Bills HAVE been doing the “build through the draft” thing for 2yrs now under the CHIX regime but at some point you need free agents and anybody who thinks that you can build exclusivly through the draft doesn’t pay attention

  24. fanick82 says: Mar 13, 2012 11:03 AM

They are not BUILDING the team through FA, they are filling holes, and adding long term depth and talent through the draft. Most of this team is young, they started building with young talent and through the draft the last couple of years….Dareus, D Nelson, S Johnson, Urbik, Levitre, Chandler, Sheppard, A Williams, Byrd, etc……..they are now at the point where they can be close to a contender, so they will spend money on REAL FA’s to get them over the hump, and then continue to add to their talent w/ draft picks.

  25. jr4real says: Mar 13, 2012 11:04 AM

Why are they dimb enough to broadcast their plan? Of im a FA i just wait until Friday to start negotiating. Put the pressure on them.

    “siggtacular says:Mar 13, 2012 10:57 AM

You guys lost four in a row”

I would HAPPILY take losing four in a row again by comparison to the last thirteen years. I don’t know of any fan that would rather be out of the serious playoff picture by week 10 every year if the other option was losing the Super Bowl every year. The Bills won 58 games in that four year span. I’ll take that any day.

  27. alewatcher says: Mar 13, 2012 11:05 AM

The Bills definitely need to add depth. They were doing great until guys started getting injured, then they fell apart.

This site is horrible…you give thumbs up or down it either doesn’t register or adds 2 or 3 to the count…you post comments and they don’t show up tell me what gives? Guess using one of the said named writers name in your post or site name gets your privaledges taken away…is Goodell in charge here am I part of some new rule he just came up with???

  30. Stiller43 says: Mar 13, 2012 11:16 AM

    He has it opposite.

Get your front line players through the draft, build depth with 2nd and 3rd tier free agents.

  31. mianfr says: Mar 13, 2012 11:19 AM

I see them bringing in two Saints, Carl Nicks and Robert Meachem.

Historically it seems like offensive linemen don’t care as much about sun and fun when picking new teams (which fits their job description, I suppose).

Meachem has the interesting problem of his potential being somewhat undermined by his system, so his market value is somewhat hard to assess. The Bills can offer him a contract closer to the high end of that potential that another team probably won’t match.

  32. trollhammer20 says: Mar 13, 2012 11:19 AM

You know, when I hear “big splash” mentioned in conjuction with Western New York, I see a barrel going over Niagara Falls….kinda like Bill fan hopes.

“build the team through free agency and use the draft for depth….sounds like a good plan…not. that is the EXACT opposite of how the super bowl champs (twice in 5 years) do it.”

is this guy serious? obviously a big splash is not building through free agency buddy nix is looking for a playmaker or two and that’s what the bills need. his philosophy has always been building through the draft which is why they never trade away picks and have acquired several since he’s been here. building is developing your own studs like stevie johnson, jairus byrd, kyle williams and marcell dareus, re-signing them and bringing in playmakers to take you to the next level.

  34. nannymcsack says: Mar 13, 2012 11:27 AM

“the team is building toward its first playoff appearance in more than a decade.”

so have they developed a specific strategy to securing a wild card spot, or did they forget that they are in the AFC TB12 division?

  35. rocamob says: Mar 13, 2012 11:29 AM

They will probably put in an offer on Aaron Maybin from the Jets. Costing the Bills yet another first round pick on him.

  40. cynicalbengalsfan says: Mar 13, 2012 12:11 PM

The Bills could have potentially made the playoffs if Fred Jackson never went down. If they want to make a push now, they may want to start looking at other options than Fitz at QB. He can be on at times, but after having to suffer through a season with him as the QB when Palmer went on, almost any Cinci fan could tell you Buffalo made a mistake with that big contract he signed.

  41. huskersrock1 says: Mar 13, 2012 12:24 PM

You always overpay for big splashes.

  42. sirdrinksalot says: Mar 13, 2012 12:36 PM

They overpaid for that bum fitzpatrick. I hope they overpay for someone who is actually worth the money, Mario Williams.

  43. buffalohogan says: Mar 13, 2012 12:54 PM

I think we can count out Vincent Jackson. Nobody ever, in any profession, leaves a job in San Diego to take a job in Buffalo.

  44. zor9999 says: Mar 13, 2012 1:17 PM

    Shawn Merriman did

  45. gmen1987 says: Mar 13, 2012 1:42 PM

What prime free agent would want to go to a dump like Buffalo?
