Eagles won’t spend big to create Dream Team 2.0

One season of being known as the Dream Team was more than enough for the Eagles.

With free agency starting in four hours, Philadelphia isn’t planning a repeat performance of 2011, when the Eagles made the biggest splash of any NFL team. CSNPhilly.com reports that the Eagles will be selective shoppers and won’t bid for the big names like Mario Williams and Carl Nicks. Don’t expect many, if any, of the players on PFT’s Hot 100 Free Agent list to land in Philadelphia.

Checking in at No. 100 on that list is the man who bestowed the Dream Team nickname on the Eagles, Vince Young, who will walk away as a free agent. The Eagles are content with Michael Vick as the starter and Mike Kafka as the backup at quarterback.

And at other positions (including wide receiver, where DeSean Jackson has the franchise tag, and offensive line, where Todd Herremans has been extended), the Eagles are also content with keeping the players they have and upgrading in depth and in the draft, not upgrading with household names. The Eagles want to build a complete team, not a star-laden Dream Team.

  1. “The Eagles are also content with keeping the players they have and upgrading in depth and in the draft”

The draft is that time of year when the Eagles add a new stash of undersized, under-productive lineman onto the roster. It’s also when the previous class of undersized, under-productive lineman get cut from the practice squad.

    Trash in, Trash out.

If the Eagles really want to make immediate upgrades, they should sign Curtis Lofton, trade DeSean Jackson for an established safety and a 3rd round pick, and become a run-oriented offense with LeSean McCoy getting 350 carries a season.

But alas, our head coach stands in the way of common sense.

  2. Eagles should sign at least one fa lb draft a lb, safety is another need i do like coleman but we need a hard hitting safety like laron landry. C’mon andy make it happen fat boyc

  3. Dear PFT: I really hope you don’t perpetuate the jinxed term ‘DREAM TEAM’ this coming season, as you and many others did last season. It was OLD & TIRED after two weeks, and I think Vince Young and the Eagles have suffered more than enough for this mistake.

  4. Nothing signifies the start of free agency like a string of Eagles posts. The Boys/Skins’ 2012 seasons were ruined before it even started. The Eagles will ruin their 2012 season in the next two weeks. All leaving the defending WORLD CHAMPIONS to pick up the scraps and make another run!!

  5. LeSean McCoy getting 350 carries a season? Great…if he can stay healthy with that kind of a workload. What if he can’t? They still need a backup who can be productive….someone better than Ronnie Brown. Trade DeSean for a Safety? And put who in his place as WR? Riley Cooper? Now if you said to trade Samuel for a Safety, I might think that’s a good idea.

Yeah your boys dont troll do they east96th??

  7. Oh jake, we were better than you last year, and we’ll be better than you this year. 😉

You’re welcome for the playoff berth, and title, borne from last seasons hiccup. Ain’t happening again. But you still have a few months to talk as champ, so keep it coming.

  8. In order for the “Dream Team” nickname to go away, the stinking media would have to stop using it.

And every time I see an article about the Eagles and a FA, I see “Dream Team” inserted. Its inevitable.

Its amazing how many people write about sports, and yet remain completely ignorant about what they write. And no, I will not call them journalists. The writing talent-pool has gotten so watered down due to blogs and the internet, that true journalists are almost extinct.

  9. This team was built for year two.. this isn’t madden, you can’t just throw players together. After the trials and faulters of last season this team has come together..

They still have fatal flaws that need to be addressed to gain any ground on the giants.. if not, you bums will have just as much ammo on us next March..

    LB,DT, LB, RB, S , CB , OL .. in that order.

  10. Im a Eagles fan and all I want is a proven LB,S, and that is it in FA.The reason why because that is our biggest need on the D-side of the ball and Andy cannot draft Defense worth a damn.Take the rest of the needs to the draft and draft good people.

  11. The Eagles don’t need to go big. They need a stud MLB (Tulloch or Lofton would be the best picks), maybe a safety, and a WR who Vick can get the ball to in the red zone. It’s not rocket science but Reid will still figure a way to screw it up.

  12. “CSNPhilly.com reports that the Eagles will be selective shoppers and won’t bid for the big names”

I believe that the defensive coordinator position is included in that statement.

  13. No the just need to grab Levi Brown, LaRon Landry, S. Tulloch, and Carl Nicks, not asking too much right?

  14. Fine, I didn’t want Nicks or Williams. Just please get a starting MLB today PLEASE!!!!

amazing post. these bloggers here are ridiculous.

I would say trade Asante for a S. I really do not see a team trading a play making WR for a S unless it is a Ed Reed type S.

Yeah let’s get rid of Reid and get a quality coach. With legendary coaches like Rich Kotite and….and…..

Well…it isn’t like Andy Reid has won more playoff games then the REST OF THE COACHES IN EAGLES HISTORY!!!!!!!!! (10 for Reid 9 for the rest)

Andy is not Vince Lombardi……but in a way he is the Vince Lombardi of philly…..show some respect. Life sucked in the old 700 level days when we never even won a playoff game……

    Thank you Mr Reid.

  18. The Vince Young “dream team” sound byte is one my all time favorites. Remember VYs first pass as an Eagle. LOL Dream Team.

  19. @ countsnail

you are close, BUT i disagree with the trading of djax. Who do you replace him with?!?! it’s not like he is an average receiver. He is by far their best. I do agree that they have a very special talent in Shady McCoy that they need to learn to use better. I feel they def need to get him as many touches as possible. They need to get viable backup RB other than Ronnie Brown and get some lineman.

  20. this site is a joke. where did u hear that theyre content with kafka being the backup? if you were actually a real journalist you’d realize the eagles already signed Trent Edwrds to be the backup. And ill gurantee that the Eagles get a LB along the lines of stephen tulloch or curtis lofton the fans wont allow them to sit quiet and do nothing. They have the cap space and Andy Reid has one more shot, you think Joe Banner and Lurie are really going to sit quiet when they gave there boy Andy an ultimatum?

  21. Quick qustion, do NY giant fans ever bath? I was in New York on business last week and some people still looked at if the superbowl was last night. Well dirtbags it was a while ago, congrats – great win – now go take a bath and please wash those ugly blue jerseys. The smell on the streets is rough, in the stadium I guess you blend in. Thanks, (the rest of the world)

  22. If I’d said it once, I’ve said it a million times; whenever the Eagles start really piping up about how they are for sure this time going to the SB, that’s when the Giants go instead. I remember in the summer of the 1990 season, i was in the barber shop waiting to get into the chair and an Eagles fan practically kicks in the the door to tell us all how the Eagles were “going all the way this year”. So when I saw the whole “dream team” thing, I kinda said to myself, “here we go” and the rest is history. Eagles fans, please make more bold predictions – LOL

Listen up serf. That stink you smell is the odor of our urine-soaked pants we get laughing so hard at your overhyped, wretched, win-nothing team! The day your “Dream Team” actually wins a GAME in February, only then can you talk about how other teams celebrate SUPER BOWL WINS. Until that day comes, kiss our smelly unbathed feet for that is how we celebrate ruling the NFL roost!! Now bow to your maker!
