Josh Morgan close to deal with Redskins

Nnamdi Asomugha, Josh Morgan AP

Pierre Garcon isn’t the only free agent receiver the Redskins are signing.

Just moments after Garcon confirmed that he’s signing with the Redskins, ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported that free agent wide receiver Josh Morgan is also on the verge of signing with the Redskins.

What this means is the Redskins are being incredibly aggressive about getting receivers in the fold who can give Robert Griffin III plenty of options from Day One of his NFL career. In a perfect world for the Redskins, Griffin, Garcon and Morgan will all develop a rapport and become a great pass-catch combination in Washington for years to come.

Morgan leaving would be bad news for the 49ers, who wanted to keep Morgan in San Francisco, although signing Randy Moss may lessen that blow.

Garcon and Morgan are both on our Free Agent Hot 100, with Garcon checking in at No. 55 and Morgan at No. 60.

Morgan caught 15 passes for 220 yards last season before being lost for the year with a broken ankle in Week Five.

Clearly, Morgan had no desire to return and play for a coach who got him hurt by passing the ball with a 42 point lead in the fourth quarter.

  2. nyninerfan says: Mar 13, 2012 5:12 PM

This sucks. Was really hoping he would be back.

  3. TheBurgundyBlogger says: Mar 13, 2012 5:12 PM

Solid pick up, dude has a TON of potential, hopefully Skins get him signed and ready..

  4. redskinsnation21 says: Mar 13, 2012 5:13 PM

Wow, so we have 5 receivers 6’2″ or shorter?
    That’s not how offense works.

  5. jwreck says: Mar 13, 2012 5:13 PM

Liking the idea, not liking anything I see in that picture.

  6. vdaigglesfan says: Mar 13, 2012 5:13 PM

    They’re spending money like it’s 2010 again.

  7. bucrightoff says: Mar 13, 2012 5:13 PM

Good complimentary pieces, but where’s the #1 receiver they need?

  8. theysone says: Mar 13, 2012 5:13 PM

This pisses me off, 49ers should have had him signed long before free agency began…

  9. cowboylover says: Mar 13, 2012 5:13 PM

Call me gullible but aren’t the Redskins signing players rather quickly? nudge-nudge wink-wink

  10. cincyorangenblack says: Mar 13, 2012 5:14 PM

they must not value draft picks, b/c they will surely be losing more since they were clearly “Tampering” before FA opened officially…. Snyder must have HUGE balls.

  11. myeaglescantwin says: Mar 13, 2012 5:14 PM

Can they get off the line vs Nnamdi & DRC??

    NNNNOPE
    not worried in the least

  12. tonyromoisterrible says: Mar 13, 2012 5:14 PM

So the Skins aren’t signing a big receiver? Two shrimps so far. Home town boy in Morgan, and a class act in Garcon, but what about a red zone threat? WTF!!!????

  13. turbodog1027 says: Mar 13, 2012 5:14 PM

Even bad WR’s don’t want to play in Frisco.

  14. mikeinsanfran says: Mar 13, 2012 5:14 PM

Sucks. I really like Josh but he is from Washington D.C. and went to VA. So you now have a kid coming home. Skin fans: He is a class act and very hard worker. I’m not happy out losing him. He has breakout potential.

  15. burgundyandgold says: Mar 13, 2012 5:14 PM

I never heard of this kid but I am glad we are not signing VJax.

  19. smartanis says: Mar 13, 2012 5:15 PM

  20. davidpoopy says: Mar 13, 2012 5:15 PM

oh em gee… where are the tall guys?? no wonder we don’t have a good offense. Do the shannahan’s really think that we’re one pierre garcon and one josh morgan away from contending? I have been waiting for this day for months.. what a disappointment :-(

  21. mikeinsanfran says: Mar 13, 2012 5:16 PM

trollhammer – DEAD wrong. He tried to get a contract done with Niners b4 free agency and said he wanted to stay. But thanks for trolling and make sheet up.

  22. stampede101 says: Mar 13, 2012 5:16 PM

    NOOOOOO!!!!!!

49ers what are you doing letting him leave?!?!

  23. lolb23 says: Mar 13, 2012 5:16 PM

This reminds me of when Skins signed Laverneous Coles…

  24. skeebo80 says: Mar 13, 2012 5:16 PM

Great pick up for skins hate to see him leave us. He’s a class act.

  25. kylehealy says: Mar 13, 2012 5:16 PM

49ers really needed to keep this guy. Solid work ethic, great blocker, and was probably the receiver Smith was most comfortable with before he got injured. Whatever the Redskins are offering….MATCH IT.

Also, he prefers to go by Joshua, not Josh. What his grandma calls him.

Has there been any report on the amount of the contracts? At #55, and 60 wouldn’t they come relatively inexpensively? This isn’t the iggles of 2011 bud. You need to ask mommy and daddy to upgrade your wireless connection so you can refresh faster and not make stupid comments that are baseless. Moving out of their basement by the time you are 30 is another idea.

  27. getadealdonealready says: Mar 13, 2012 5:17 PM

Cowboylover – I was thinking the same thing, seems like they are the team always looking to skip around the rules, isn’t this the same team that signed hansworth 1 min after FA opened a few years back?

  28. frankdatank23 says: Mar 13, 2012 5:17 PM

They crack me up with these Wr’s they pay year after year to do very little. They need to be talking to Meachem atleast.

  29. Stupid Raiders Fan says: Mar 13, 2012 5:17 PM

Last year they brought in a half dozen mediocre WR’s too.

  30. duncanthecat says: Mar 13, 2012 5:18 PM

Pair them with one or two current roster players and their receiving crew will, by far, be the best in years.

The Redskins are adding speed accross the board on offense. One can already expect their offense, to be vastly improved if they can sign a RT. I believe a decent zone blocking G can be had with their early 3rd round pick.

  31. dmvskins703 says: Mar 13, 2012 5:19 PM

  32. tundey says: Mar 13, 2012 5:19 PM

@redskinsnation21: Have you seen the size of CBs in this league? With all the no-touching rules and back-shoulder passes, you dont have to be a giant to play WR anymore.

Love Morgan, Garcon will be huge flop (product of his situation and bad hands). I guess going .500 for Snyder is considered pretty good.

  40. footballfanman says: Mar 13, 2012 5:22 PM

I guarantee we would have paid Jackson the most and he would be ours right now had we not been hit with the cap penalty. A damn shame. But maybe Hankerson can step up and be are number 1.

    ———————————

Polite of you to fail to mention that their rookie QB was in and needed reps. That’s the only reason they were passing.

  42. kylehealy says: Mar 13, 2012 5:22 PM

    @tonyromoisterrible

Yes, there have been some reports. Garcon will be getting in the $7-8 mil a year range. Not sure about Morgan. Not relatively inexpensive. But for a team that just lost $18 mil in cap space for 2012 and don’t have a big, physical receiver, have to question why you’d sign both. Also, no need to insult the dude before you. He was right, you were wrong.

  43. sickcuz says: Mar 13, 2012 5:23 PM

  45. avallstar says: Mar 13, 2012 5:27 PM

It’s funny how clueless some people are that comment on this blog. Both of these receivers are strong #2′s and #3′s, both young, and with good
character. Plus they’re replacing a couple mediocre older guys.

You can’t just go sign a #1 WR. The team that drafts them doesn’t let them walk. As a Skins fan, I’m glad we didn’t sign VJax and waste all that money. We’ll have to wait until 2015 (haha) and then draft that #1 WR we need!

  46. tubbasaurus says: Mar 13, 2012 5:27 PM

Let see they just made a move to draft RG3. If you were a wide receiver not quite a #1 receiver and have a chance to catch balls from his gifted arm would you be quick to call and sign with that team. Look at Laurent Robinson sucked for other teams 4 total touchdowns in career but made gold for Dallas with 11 last season.

  47. cutthajokes says: Mar 13, 2012 5:28 PM

Leonard Hankerson is 6″3. He’s on the Redskins roster if anyone wants to know if the Redskins have a tall WR.

  48. rujusten says: Mar 13, 2012 5:29 PM

Redzone threat is gonna have to be Hankerson…he needs to step up this year!

    ——————–

While I agree with you in principle, the Skins know as well as anyone else that, short of someone being caught red-handed trying to convince a player not to re-sign with their team, the league will never go after anyone for tampering because everyone does it. Honestly, they need to just go ahead and allow teams to start conversations with pending free agents at the combine, then actively seek out and sanction anyone who’s doing so before then.

  50. brenenostler says: Mar 13, 2012 5:34 PM

  51. jamaltimore says: Mar 13, 2012 5:36 PM

Hey another hokie to go along with Angelo, I got rid of the D cause I don’t play any!

I can’t wait to the season starts because that’s the fun time to live in DC market and follow the Skins. If the fail this year like they do every year people will be jumping from the rooftops.

Maybe this year they’ll stay relevant past september.

  52. bossplayer213 says: Mar 13, 2012 5:37 PM

  55. claytron5000 says: Mar 13, 2012 5:48 PM

  57. mikeinfected says: Mar 13, 2012 5:53 PM

this makes a lot of sense considering who they’re about to draft. Morgan is a great blocker and might not have elite speed but he catches everything thrown his way.

Shame if he’s getting away from the Niners but who knows what Obi-Wan Baalke has up his sleeve ?

    In Baalke I trust.

What? You mean that the skins signed him and traded him for Santana Moss, who, while small is one tough M’Fer that has no problem going across the middle at a generous 5’10″ and has been one of the few bright spots on an otherwise dim several years? Yea, just like that….I dont even understand where people get this ridiculous s**t from.

  61. cashisking4life says: Mar 13, 2012 6:04 PM

Redskins determined to win the offseason again….which means the Rams are assured their draft pick from them next season will be in Top 5.

  64. bigjdve says: Mar 13, 2012 6:14 PM

There was/has been alot of talk about how RGIII is generating alot of interest in playing with the Redskins.

The receivers signing are young and want to play with a talented QB, they will be getting that.

If the Colts change up and draft Griffin instead of Luck, the Redskins will still get Luck, thus making sure that they get to play with a really good prospect.

They should be moderately priced pickups that allow for some more pickups later. 2 young guys with speed and potential. This is helping make up for lost draft picks by getting youth.

This still means that they are trying to rebuild.

  65. castleofcheese says: Mar 13, 2012 6:16 PM

I can’t believe I’m about to say this, but that makes two very solid free agency moves by the Redskins. With the Raiders and Redskins both making competent front office decisions, who are we supposed to laugh at? Oh, yeah… We still have the Vikings for that!

  66. jahbird says: Mar 13, 2012 6:17 PM

  69. schlonkie2 says: Mar 13, 2012 6:50 PM

Funny how almost every Niners fan is pissed about losing Morgan and is posting about how hes a class act and a hard worker….but I wont take their word for it.

Ill take the degenerate Eagles fans and the other couple of real special ‘tards words for it.

Its pretty remarkable that there are so many people that just have it figured out in Philly…I mean after winning Super Bowls by the dozens and really building that 2011 team up with draft picks, saavy moves and good business sense, who could not listen to everything that came out of that bung hole of brotherly love?

It cracks me up that Eagles fans are talking about how receivers cant get off the line with DRC and None-D Asomugha and how the Skins (and safe to assume any other team) dont scare them.

Yet just a few months ago Eagles fans were outside the practice facility chanting for Andy Reids head and had to have their own players ask them to please stop. Solid fans, SOLID.

  70. deangelo1776 says: Mar 13, 2012 6:52 PM
