Martellus Bennett visiting New York, Giants hope to sign him quickly

Chris Neild, Martellus Bennett AP

The New York Giants have a need at tight end, and they’re hoping to move quickly to fill that need by taking a player away from a division rival.

Martellus Bennett, a tight end who has played his entire four-year career with the Dallas Cowboys, is on his way to New York for a visit, and the Giants have identified him as their top target and hope to get him signed quickly, Mike Garafolo of the Star-Ledger reports.

As the No. 2 tight end behind Jason Witten, Bennett didn’t have a major impact in the Cowboys’ offense, catching 17 passes for 144 yards last season. But he’s a talented 6-foot-6 270-pounder who fills a major need for the Giants.

After the Giants lost two tight ends to torn ACLs in the Super Bowl and former Giants tight end Kevin Boss was sent packing by the Raiders, many NFL observers just assumed that Boss would find his way back to New York. But at the moment, Bennett is the tight end the Giants most want to sign.

Bennett has a lot of potential.

Another great job by Jerry Reese. Looks like they will win the SB again next year.

Agreed. He has a TON of potential, could possibly be a Top 8 TE – FF wise – if he’s featured with Nicks, Manningham.

  6. nygsbchamps4 says: Mar 13, 2012 5:07 PM

This would be even better than bringing Boss back. Jerry Reese the best GM in the game, and he’s proving that. In Reese we trust!

    Get em…

  8. nannymcsack says: Mar 13, 2012 5:07 PM

    can’t catch

  9. nyyjetsknicks says: Mar 13, 2012 5:08 PM

Kevin Boss would be a better signing for the Giants.

  10. demonspank says: Mar 13, 2012 5:08 PM

Wow, talk about a great fit.

NYG is going to be tough again (even without him).

  11. n0hopeleft says: Mar 13, 2012 5:08 PM

    Dude has tremendous potential.

Especially with a real QB, who will evenly distribute the ball, rather than target his BFF all day.

  12. unitedstateoftexas says: Mar 13, 2012 5:08 PM

After having seen this guy twice a year for the past 4 years, why are you Giants fans so excited? Bennett is a clown.

  13. nflofficeadmin says: Mar 13, 2012 5:09 PM

Much more athletic than Boss and much more in the schlong department as well. This guy has a much higher ceiling and could develop with Manning in ways not possible with Tony. Way to go!

  14. jdandcoke says: Mar 13, 2012 5:09 PM

reese needs to seal the deal here….he was plan a, carlson plan b, and i guess boss or some other scrub was plan c. anyone who was thinking reese was going to waste that first pick on fleener or allen obviously doesnt pay attention.

  15. firedup1 says: Mar 13, 2012 5:09 PM

I always thought he could be a really good player. If used properly he could be a pro bowler.

  16. thompgk says: Mar 13, 2012 5:10 PM

As a Cowboys fan I like Marty B but if anyone thinks he just didn’t get PT you are crazy.

  17. Grulks says: Mar 13, 2012 5:10 PM

As a Dallas Fan, good luck with this doofus. Having watched him practice during two different camps, I can tell you he has a poor work ethic, is immature, and has a sense of entitlement to him. If you plan on using him as a blocker, he’ll be a very good TE for you. If you plan on using him as a pass catching weapon, be prepared to be disappointed.

  18. axespray says: Mar 13, 2012 5:10 PM

“Bennett didn’t have a major impact in the Cowboys’ offense, catching 17 passes for 144 yards last season.”

Was he at least a good Run Blocker, or is he just a neat sized athlete that can’t play football at all?

  19. cowboylover says: Mar 13, 2012 5:12 PM

Have fun with Marty B NY!!

  20. katrinasafterbirth says: Mar 13, 2012 5:14 PM

hahaha NY, this guy is a cancer. He can’t catch, has missed assignments, and most of all is dumb. I didn’t think there was an NFL stupid enough to sign this guy, but the Giants proved me wrong…

  21. teague31 says: Mar 13, 2012 5:15 PM

Im a boys fan and I hope the guy does go the giants. He can’t catch at all and hes a damn moron. See ya sucka

  22. nygsbchamps4 says: Mar 13, 2012 5:17 PM

@Nyyjetsknicks, don’t you think the fact that we had Boss on the team before but decided to go after Bennett instead says something?

  23. bigdinla says: Mar 13, 2012 5:18 PM

MArty B is a great blocking TE and that is it. He can not run a route and has hands of stone. Of course at least he is a lockerroom cancer! Good luck with that Giants!

  24. davebrownspiral says: Mar 13, 2012 5:21 PM

Giants don’t run the same three ring circus Dallas does. Bennett will fall in line under Coughlin and a bunch of veterans who have a pair of Super Bowls in their cache. Let’s see if they sign him first. Still think Giants have more pressing needs at Offensive tackle and LB, but Jerry Reese knows alot more about the Giants and team needs than I do.

  25. nj22 says: Mar 13, 2012 5:23 PM

LOVE IT! As a Dallas fan, I’d much rather he have his stone hands are in NY!

  26. cowboysfan18 says: Mar 13, 2012 5:23 PM

    Good riddance, lazy bum.

  27. ttommytom says: Mar 13, 2012 5:24 PM

Not like the Giants need him to win a Super Bowl.
He is a great blocker. The occasional seem pass in the run and shoot is all you need from a TE, receiver wise.

  28. kebija says: Mar 13, 2012 5:25 PM

As an Aggies and Cowboys fan, I had a lot of hope for Marty B in Big D. Unfortunately the dude had trouble running routes and when a pass was thrown his way he dropped a lot of them. Last year he showed some improvement in a contract year. I would not place too much stock in him, but he can block.

  29. back2cali says: Mar 13, 2012 5:25 PM

I love how these scenarios play out. All the Dallas fans are saying they are glad the Giants took this “dumb clown”. Then next year when he’s abusing Rob Ryan’s LBs and catching first downs they will be pissed at Jones for letting him go. I trust Reese & Coughlin’s assessment of a player more than a dbag Cowboy fan.

  30. jdandcoke says: Mar 13, 2012 5:25 PM

its funny…..the fans of one of the worst run teams in the game, the cowboys, have the audacity to question a gm who had the foresight to secure two guys who nobody had ever even heard of, boss and ballard, and have them develop into pretty decent TE’s. martellus bennet is IMMENSELY more physically gifted than either.
unlike the cowboys, the giants have an actual NFL-CALLIBER coaching staff, which includes one of the best TE coaches in the league, mike pope.

if reese wants bennett, than bennett has the goods….the cowboys, as should be expected, just had no idea how to optimize the kid’s talents.

  31. colinsnooks says: Mar 13, 2012 5:26 PM

You know a fourth year player sucks when all anyone talks about is his potential. Jamarcus Russell had potential too.

  32. sicklife1 says: Mar 13, 2012 5:26 PM

Hey Cowboys fans, watch what this TE will do with a REAL QB. If he signs with the GMEN, guaranteed All Star for years to come. And don’t ever question Jerry Reese boys….

  33. iivil says: Mar 13, 2012 5:27 PM

I’m a firm believer the Giants have a better culture then the Cowboys. Also they have better coaching. Just because the guy didn’t live up to his potential in Dallas doesn’t mean he can’t in New York. Maybe he’ll find his place and shine.

  34. giantrealist says: Mar 13, 2012 5:28 PM

MB does come with baggage. But we need to remember that the NY Giants have the best TE coach in the game in Pope + the best QB in the league in Eli Manning. This kid might have 17 catches after the first 2 games.

  35. waxthat says: Mar 13, 2012 5:36 PM

    underachiever..good luck NY.

  36. bigbluefan1 says: Mar 13, 2012 5:43 PM

How funny to read all the bashing

    TC and JR know talent
And will be joining a locker room full of champions and MVP’s

He will be leaving behind an assclown of a GM and the greatest joke on Turf

  37. bigblueapple says: Mar 13, 2012 5:46 PM

Every off season, never fails… I love seeing Reese’s pieces coming together.

Just the type of TE we need, and as much as I like to think I follow the Giants carefully enough to predict any logical signing, Reese always shows me he knows way more than any of us do.

  38. rarelyclever says: Mar 13, 2012 5:54 PM

For all his talent, Bennett hasn’t grown up after 4 years. He’s still the same player he was when he was a rookie, and that’s not a good tight end. Sure he can block, so can every third string TE in the NFL. The Cowboys need a good 2nd TE, and I don’t think they considered keeping him for a second.

  39. thebigcaptain2011 says: Mar 13, 2012 5:55 PM

He will be a great fit. I have all of the confidence in the world that Coach TC and Eli can make a player out of this guy. He will block for us and he will be a red zone thret. This kid knows that he has to do it now if he is going to last in the NFL. This is his last chance. He will make something of it. Jale Ballard is a slow, unathletic stiff from Ohio State. Now I like Jake a lot, but Marty will produce Shockey-like numbers in NY, and he will be kept in check with the leadership in the Giants locker room. Plus, he will have a real qb for a change. (Que up the Cowfans with the hate). This guy will be a player for us and for cheap. It will be a one year deal with a second option year with minimum guaruntees. This is a good pickup.

  40. thebigcaptain2011 says: Mar 13, 2012 6:00 PM

    @collinsnooks
Actually Jamarcus did not have potential. Before he even came in the NFL he was an overweight, non-working codein addict.

    ———————————————-

Idiot. The Cowboys have had, depending on how you value blocking and receptions, the best overall tight end for the last 6 years. Martellus got tons of playing time and the same staff that turned a second round pick into a superstar.

When everyone who actually watched this guy is saying one thing, only a Giant’s homer “Fan” (a lot of you who I’ve never seen before they won the super bowl) is dumb enough to believe another thing.

It’s funny… how delusional giants fans are.

Btw… I wonder if the Giants will get stripped cap space or draft picks for blatantly faking injuries to stop the clock during their “magical” super bowl run?

  42. lapistola5 says: Mar 13, 2012 6:08 PM

This guys potential talent is indeed off the hook! Key word being potential!! His extremely lazy work ethic and route running is good enough reason for the Cowboy NOT to have any concerns having this clown play in the same division. Just watch tape and or the last Hard Knocks with the Dallas Cowboys

  43. nflofficeadmin says: Mar 13, 2012 6:10 PM

Everyone said the same thing about Ballard when he joined from Ohio State. “The guy can’t catch.” He ended up catching more balls his rookie year with the Giants than he caught his entire career at Ohio St. I guess they knew something. C’mon man. Knowledge is power.

  44. thebigcaptain2011 says: Mar 13, 2012 6:11 PM

    @tigeralum2010
How are Giants fan’s delusional, but Cowboy fans aren’t? For as good as Witten has been, how come the offense lays a big egg every time there is a big game to be won? What Giants fans are saying today that with the veteran leadership and coaching the Giants have to offer there is a good chance Marty B can flourish in the Giants’ system. I personally think he will. And yes, I have been a Giants fan since I was old enough to start watching football (1990) and I played football at high levels so I’m not some brainless nutjob on here posting vitriol.

  45. bluester111 says: Mar 13, 2012 6:25 PM

This Giants’ fan pays attention. I fully expect the Giants to use that pick and draft another D-Lineman from a non-descript school who will be wreaking havoc with JPP for the next 10 years.

  47. cmb79 says: Mar 13, 2012 6:34 PM

This guy has the potential, but it’s untapped. Hopefully the Giants can figure out how to maximize it.

  48. legends52 says: Mar 13, 2012 11:52 PM

I think you guys have confused this particular individual with Jason witten. This is NOT the tight end that has powered our offense for several years. I know you giants fans hate us and are supposedly so much smarter, but we actually had this guy. We know what he’s like and we know his strengths and his weaknesses, and he’s got more weaknesses than strengths. He is a liability in the passing game and couldn’t catch a ball if you placed duct tape on it and doesn’t have a winning attitude or proper mindset for a game where you need to be extremely mature and set to play.

And for the delusional giants fans hailing Eli manning as the greatest quarterback in the nfl, I’m sure you were the same ones who showered him with boos and demanded his release prior to super bowl XLII. He may be top in the clutch, but in general and statistics he is not “the greatest quarterback in the league”

  49. giantsfan2104 says: Mar 14, 2012 2:16 AM

Interesting. Dallas fans seem to agree that MB was terrible.

Correct me if I’m wrong, but weren’t they saying the same thing about Chris Canty when Giants picked him up in ’09? Everyone said he was a lost cause, and they were glad to see him go. The Giants’ coaching staff tends to find ways to turn “useless” players into key players. (i.e. Canty, Ballard, and possibly Bennett)

The Giants are thin at TE right now, so I’m hoping he finds a place in the the offense.
If he doesn’t, so be it, but IF he does, I think it would raise more questions about the Cowboys’ staff, rather than his abilities as a player.

  50. bigbluelou says: Mar 14, 2012 11:50 AM

I like how all the fans now believe in Reese, the same ones who blasted him for “doing nothing” last year as the Eagles signed everybody…how’d that work out? Let the man do his job and let the season unfold.
