Robert Griffin III may be getting a new receiver in Washington, six weeks before Griffin himself lands in Washington.

Pierre Garcon, the free agent receiver who has played his entire four-year NFL career with the Colts, is in negotiations with the Redskins, Jason Cole of Yahoo Sports reports.

The Colts tried to get a deal done with Garcon before free agency and it’s still possible that he’ll stay in Indianapolis, but he decided to test the market first. That may end up being a profitable decision because the Redskins are known to be interested in spending big to get a playmaker at wide receiver -- even though the recent league ruling taking some of their salary cap space away has hamstrung their efforts.

The 25-year-old Garcon started all 16 games for the Colts last year and, despite the absence of Peyton Manning, had career highs in catches (70), receiving yards (947) and touchdowns (six). He’s one of several big-name free agent receivers on the market, and is the first known to be actively negotiating with a new team.

UPDATE: Adam Schefter reports that the Rams are also talking to Garcon.
