We call that the nickel on defense. I’m not splitting hairs, but “slot” indicates man coverage of a slot receiver. The nickel back also helps out on the outside lanes and sometimes blitzes attacks the line of scrimmage. D.J. Moore is a great option at the nickel… literally a heat seeking missile.

"We gotta do better than him. He’d be good in the slot but we need somebody better opposite Peanut."

We call that the nickel on defense. I'm not splitting hairs, but "slot" indicates man coverage of a slot receiver. The nickel back also helps out on the outside lanes and sometimes blitzes attacks the line of scrimmage. D.J. Moore is a great option at the nickel... literally a heat seeking missile. Tim Jennings is not actually as suited to play the nickel because he doesn't pursue as well as he covers.

For those of you who don't think he's physical, I probably can't help you. He's literally the only Bears CB I've seen in years who can get a jam off at the line of scrimmage (usually coaching call, but they make the call based on their personnel). Also had some pretty impressive run stuffing plays, which is HUGE in the cover 2 because it covers the Strong Safety in the flat.

The cushion you guys are referring to is a different defensive scheme the Bears unfortunately call too much when they are scared, known as the "prevent" defense. Mike Ditka always says it prevents you from winning, and it cost the Bears 2011 3 games in my mind (how do you think Tebow worked the 2 minute drill on us))

I agree, though, we should draft a big guy to step up into the system. Mario Williams first, then remaining cap room AND 1st round pick on a big receiver, 2nd round pick on an offensive tackle. There should be options in the 3rd round, so they can draft linebackers and secondary.

oh crap they just traded for marshall

This makes it more likely they will grab Mario Williams. With the cover two any average CB's can be above average with a stellar pass rush.
