Vincent Jackson could be Tampa bound

The top receiver (arguably) in the 2012 free-agent class could already have a new home.

Kevin Acee of U-T San Diego reports via Twitter, “It’s over. After seven years, it appears VJ headed to Tam[p]a Bay.”

Of course, “VJ” is Vincent Jackson, the Chargers’ franchise player in 2012.

Jackson at one point was linked to the Bears, but they traded for Brandon Marshall.  The Redskins also were in the mix, but the loss of $18 million in cap space likely kept that from happening.

Though the Bucs have plenty of cash to spend, it may not be the best idea to overspend on a 29-year-old receiver with two DUIs.  Though the off-field incidents came several years ago, the Bucs have been trying to shed the image of a team that harbors problem children.

That said, the team needs to win more games.  To win more games, they need better players.  Vincent Jackson is better than any receiver they have.

Don’t you have him as #3 on your Top 100?

  2. A local media guy said he was asking for 17 million. Please tell me we weren’t dumb enough to comply.

  3. for a team that needs about 50 better players, to put all that money in one guy with questionable character is incredibly dumb.
Sounds like business as usual at One Buc Place, sign guys with troubling character and continue to stink when the going gets rough.

  4. may as well get all the weapons you can get….
even if they are drunk route runners….
You gotta keep up with Cam and Brees….
    Shootout!

  5. “VJ day!”

I thumbs downed this, but its just because Ive been watching him as a Bolts fan and was sad to see him go.

However, I must renig my thumbs down, I always have to support a good ww2 pun, one of the best Ive seen in along time.

  6. AJ could’ve locked him up a year or two ago cheaper, but instead decide to play hardball and use his stupid AJ tactics to screw the Chargers out of one of their great players AGAIN. When is enough enough? AJ needs to go.

  7. Adam Schefter said that this was pretty much a done deal. Freeman will have so much talent around him on offense now so there is no excuse for him to fail.

  8. Good, he’ll have two opportunities a year for Colston to show him that he is a better receiver.

    Yet Colston is #18.

    Some list.

Dom resigned Michael Clayton to $7 Million a year contract not too long ago, so paying a guy that actually has talent is an improvement.

  11. So nice to hear Tampa is actually in the FA talks this year… I would love to see him in a Buc Uniform! Just him being double covered, will open up Williams. Williams is highly talented, and I would love to see them two… Freeman would love it.

  12. The probem with Lawyers is that once they write something they have to keep repeating it – such as including VJ’s “baggage”.

Pls check your facts. as to my knowledge – All-Pro VJ has not had a DUI incident in what – 3 years? That’s just plain old arse kissing up to Bolts GM AJ Smith – the Lord of NO Rings – who will be in power for thankfully – just one more disappointing year.

  13. @irodex: nice plagiarism of Tom Krasovic of the NCTimes on Twitter.

“could’ve locked him up yr or two ago cheaper instead decide to play hardball stoopid AJ tactics”

  14. How does this guy rate as a cancer? AJ “LONR” Smith treated this guy like crap and he still came to work and put up Pro Bowl numbers. Maybe his numbers are inflated because of Rivers (though I don’t agree), but cancer? Nahh

  15. It’s funny how an athlete says its not about the money and all I want to do is win. Then they go to the highest bidder on a crappy team. hence Tampa, no passing attack lost the last 11 games of last year. Its all about the money, just say it, I would have more respect for you.

Haha.. thanks. I was wondering how many would get it.

I am hoping this guy makes a difference. Freeman had very few weapons last year. I do think his DUIs are in the past. Hopefully he will be a team player.

  17. “Vincent Jackson is better than any receiver they have.”????????

he’s better than every player on the Bucs COMBINED

  18. Why is it that all my posts get deleted? I put up a nice post that I am looking forward to VJ in Tampa, and with Williams on the otherside of the field, it will open him up quite a bit, and he will put up big Numbers…. This 1 signing will make a HUGE difference on the offensive side of the ball.

pacodawg: Really? Yes, Freeman had a bad year, however, did you catch his stats the previous year? Freeman has a lot of tallent, and will put up great numbers, but, he had no talent on the OL, and no real running game. Williams was his only talented receiver, and with them working this off season together, you will see some big numbers…

  20. All the teams this guy could have gone to – all the Super Bowl contenders – and he picks a team that will most likely not even make the playoffs for the remainder of his career.

I guess that’s what money can do. Make a ton of it, and have a good shot at a Super Bowl. Make a ton plus a bit more of it, and have your resume go quiet.

Still, best of luck to him and the team. I could be wrong.

  21. The Tampa Bay Bucs are in decline! there goes Vincent Jackson’s relevance in the league lol. hopefully they pay you. Tampa sucks!

  22. The Tampa O-Line at present is an above average unit. They don’t pass block as well, but when they actual commit to the run they do well. Adding Nicks would make them top 10, maybe top 5.

  23. I disagree.. I think they are better pass blocking than run blocking. The only real run blocker they have is Joseph (he is a nasty beast). There were times Freeman had time to throw, just no open receivers or poor decisions. If they get Nicks, they should be a running machine, opening up the pass (long ball to VJ).
