APThe Chargers lost free agent Vincent Jackson to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Tuesday evening, but G.M. A.J. Smith countered with a move early Wednesday morning that will keep his team competitive at wide receiver.
The club announced that it has signed deep threat receiver Robert Meachem, formerly of the Saints.
Per Michael Gehlken of the Union-Tribune San Diego, Meachem’s deal is for four years and $25.9 million, with $14 million guaranteed.
A rotational receiver in New Orleans, Meachem should become an every-down wideout with San Diego. He is a downfield threat with sub-4.4 speed, fitting coach Norv Turner’s vertical offense.
Meachem figures to start opposite Malcom Floyd, with 2011 third-round pick Vincent Brown manning the slot.

Nice replacement for Vincent Jackson….NOT.
Wait… weren’t the Bills going to sign him too?
LOL!
Doh! The Bills are 0-2 today. Guess they couldn’t lure him with a membership to the local bowling alley in the offseason.
QB Phillip Rivers is going to love throwing the long bombs to this dude.
Mistake by Saints letting him go.
Hope he play’s like crap. That’s for wasting our time jerk.
So he flew to Buffalo to sign with San Diego?
Did he have to ask Ralph Wilson to borrow a pen?
That sucks for the Bills. It would’ve been nice to see Meachem and Mario sign with them tonight.
Whatever happened to “Bills fully expect to sign Meachem and Williams”.
Robert Meachem has officially trolled the city of Buffalo.
14 mill guaranteed, wow! not bad for a rotational wide receiver.
Idiots.
Idiots.
So much for the Bills getting Meachem and Williams within the next 24 hours…might not get either of them, great
$7 Mil for a second line receiver, yeah, go Chargers!
Bills fully expect to sign Mario Williams and Robert Mea….
Dangit!!!
BTW, How did Pierre Garcon get more than this cat?
You can quote me on this!!
Rivers will make Meachem a #1 receiver and VJ will be released by his 3rd year in Tampa..
The Ain’ts are about to fall apart especially after they lose Colston and Nix next…
I was hoping to keep him. He’s got serious speed and good hands.
Meachem had talent, but was basically an underachiever for the Saints, never living up to being a first round pick. With Colston, Lance Moore, Devry Henderson, Adrian Arrington, and whoever else they draft, Meachem will not long be missed.
So much for the Bills splash into free agency.
wow! talk about way overpaid. this makes me think of what a steal the packers got locking up jordy nelson last year 3 yrs for 13.3 mill.
Good pick up for a good price. Good luck VJ!
So much for the Bills report on planning to sign him lol
Are you sure this was A.J. Smith that made this move? Meacham was an excellent receiver for the Saints and should be an excellent receiver for the Chargers. I didn’t know AJ had it in him.
Nice!!!!!
Journeyman. If you don’t break out by the end of your rookie contract, you are not going to make your new team “competitive” at your position.
Definitely an upgrade AJ!!!!!!!!!!!! 8D
It’s not Weds morning on the West Coast fella.
he aint VJ
See ya VJax!
Cough, cough….OVERPAID!!!!
Nice! Please add Nicks and lets focus on defense in the draft. Bolts.
Good, maybe a team will throw to him more than 3 games a year. I always thought he was pretty good but there’s just so many weapons in New Orleans that he was never able to break out.
There’s going to be a lot of teams sorry that they didn’t sign Meacham for this kind of money.
Brutal signing by the Bolts idiot management. They let V.Jackson go and sign replace him with a second tier #3 reciever, to join their other #3 receivers.
Embarassing that ownership didn’t see this coming and let AJ Smith screw this up….I’m sure Philip Rivers is wringing his hands tonight.
Is he really worth that much ?You never know he can be a bust without having Drew Brees or he can be a boom without Drew Brees. We will see.
Did he even visit the Chargers? Why did he bother going to Buffalo? Must have wanted a free dinner.
Guess he changed his mind about buffalo like Mario Williams did.
Good pick up, now let’s fill all the other holes on our O-line and the rest of our defense….got a lot of work still to be done.
Dd he have to ask Ralph Wilson to borrow a pen?
Good luck Meach, we’re gonna miss ya down here in Who Dat Nation.
I can guarantee one thing … Meachem won’t be wearing #17 in SD!
Meachem’s fantasy value just shifted from undrafted in most leagues to a high Round 2.
whats that i hear…. wooooooosh….. the air going out of the Bills tires, the collective sighhhh of a city….. it happened to us AGAIN? meet the new Bills…… same as the OL bills =/
Meachem is a scum sucker.
Good Luck, Meach! At least we still got Sproles….and Brees. Who Dat!
Overpaid for a #3 or #2 at best wr.
He benefitted from Graham, Sproles, Colston, Moore, and Brees.
As an expected #1, he will not live up to the hype. He catches TDs and doesn’t drop much but he’s not a natural pass catcher and tends to fall to the ground on the catch to secure it.
His route running besides the deep stuff is questionable.
Good luck to Meach though, maybe the fanbase in SD will learn to spell his name correctly and thanks to SD for a compensatory draft pick coming the saints way from the NFL.
Good (but not great) move. You draft Stephen Hill first round and your offense is ELITE! Don’t bother making a play for a shorter wr. U need 1 more tall wr to throw in to the rotation and contribute. Also, another option is Braylon. Godspeed charger nation.
Hated to lose VJ, but Floyd is really shining and Meachem will be a solid #2 WR for us. Shore up the O Line and get a kicker who can boot it into the end zone on kickoffs!
Bills are striking out so far
good move for the chargers they splurged for them and you know they would never have spent more, now if they could fix their defense 10yrs without a SS and three years without a pass rush cant even win the AFC West.
we gon miss u MEACH…good luck in S.D.
Rivers best season was the one Vincent Jackson sat out(12 of 16 games). This was a great move. Not much drop off at WR and more money to fill other holes.
Please sign Gaither and a pass rusher.
Mario Williams isn’t out of the Bills picture yet. if they sign him, drafting Malcom Floyd 1st will be better than a bust no:1 from N.O.
decent possesion reciever not fast enough to run down the field but his great leaping ability with this height makes a great fit to replace Jackson
cluelessdufus-
What part of “downfield threat with sub 4.4 speed” makes you think he’s not fast enough to run downfield? He’s never been a possession receiver. He’s a big play waiting to happen. He is a baller and will be missed.
Hey – the Lord of NO Rings gets half the receiver at half the price. And don’t even think Vincent Brown is going to be that good.
Did I read taht correctly? Someone gave Robert Meachem over 6 million per year? Robert Meachem??? Hahahahahaha.
God, I love Ted Thompson.
