Chargers sign Meachem to four-year, $25.9 million contract

The Chargers lost free agent Vincent Jackson to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Tuesday evening, but G.M. A.J. Smith countered with a move early Wednesday morning that will keep his team competitive at wide receiver.

The club announced that it has signed deep threat receiver Robert Meachem, formerly of the Saints.

Per Michael Gehlken of theĀ Union-Tribune San Diego, Meachem’s deal is for four years and $25.9 million, with $14 million guaranteed.

A rotational receiver in New Orleans, Meachem should become an every-down wideout with San Diego. He is a downfield threat with sub-4.4 speed, fitting coach Norv Turner’s vertical offense.

Meachem figures to start opposite Malcom Floyd, with 2011 third-round pick Vincent Brown manning the slot.

  2. pfii63 says: Mar 14, 2012 12:36 AM

Wait… weren’t the Bills going to sign him too?

  3. finsfan71 says: Mar 14, 2012 12:37 AM

Doh! The Bills are 0-2 today. Guess they couldn’t lure him with a membership to the local bowling alley in the offseason.

  4. fumblenuts says: Mar 14, 2012 12:37 AM

QB Phillip Rivers is going to love throwing the long bombs to this dude.

  5. spytdi says: Mar 14, 2012 12:38 AM

Mistake by Saints letting him go.

  6. wirelessworldofsports says: Mar 14, 2012 12:39 AM

Hope he play’s like crap. That’s for wasting our time jerk.

  7. berttt420 says: Mar 14, 2012 12:39 AM

So he flew to Buffalo to sign with San Diego?

  8. drewzducks says: Mar 14, 2012 12:41 AM

Did he have to ask Ralph Wilson to borrow a pen?

  9. TSizzleBallSoHard says: Mar 14, 2012 12:41 AM

That sucks for the Bills. It would’ve been nice to see Meachem and Mario sign with them tonight.

  10. cjepp says: Mar 14, 2012 12:42 AM

Whatever happened to “Bills fully expect to sign Meachem and Williams”.

Robert Meachem has officially trolled the city of Buffalo.

  11. staffordsyear says: Mar 14, 2012 12:42 AM

14 mill guaranteed, wow! not bad for a rotational wide receiver.

$7 Mil for a second line receiver, yeah, go Chargers!

BTW, How did Pierre Garcon get more than this cat?

  18. ringthis says: Mar 14, 2012 12:48 AM

You can quote me on this!!

Rivers will make Meachem a #1 receiver and VJ will be released by his 3rd year in Tampa..

  19. cowboychris5xchamps says: Mar 14, 2012 12:49 AM

The Ain’ts are about to fall apart especially after they lose Colston and Nix next…

  20. xxwhodatxx says: Mar 14, 2012 12:50 AM

I was hoping to keep him. He’s got serious speed and good hands.

  21. musicman495 says: Mar 14, 2012 12:52 AM

Meachem had talent, but was basically an underachiever for the Saints, never living up to being a first round pick. With Colston, Lance Moore, Devry Henderson, Adrian Arrington, and whoever else they draft, Meachem will not long be missed.

  22. thrasherm316 says: Mar 14, 2012 12:52 AM

So much for the Bills splash into free agency.

  23. tramonisland says: Mar 14, 2012 12:52 AM

wow! talk about way overpaid. this makes me think of what a steal the packers got locking up jordy nelson last year 3 yrs for 13.3 mill.

  24. bolting801 says: Mar 14, 2012 12:53 AM

Good pick up for a good price. Good luck VJ!

  25. icanspeel says: Mar 14, 2012 12:53 AM

So much for the Bills report on planning to sign him lol

  26. omniscient48 says: Mar 14, 2012 12:54 AM

Are you sure this was A.J. Smith that made this move? Meacham was an excellent receiver for the Saints and should be an excellent receiver for the Chargers. I didn’t know AJ had it in him.

  28. gator2006 says: Mar 14, 2012 12:55 AM

Journeyman. If you don’t break out by the end of your rookie contract, you are not going to make your new team “competitive” at your position.

  29. roamingabriel says: Mar 14, 2012 12:56 AM

    Definitely an upgrade AJ!!!!!!!!!!!! 8D

  34. twelvehundred says: Mar 14, 2012 1:00 AM

Nice! Please add Nicks and lets focus on defense in the draft. Bolts.

  35. cannonballdookie says: Mar 14, 2012 1:01 AM

Good, maybe a team will throw to him more than 3 games a year. I always thought he was pretty good but there’s just so many weapons in New Orleans that he was never able to break out.

  36. thejuddstir says: Mar 14, 2012 1:03 AM

There’s going to be a lot of teams sorry that they didn’t sign Meacham for this kind of money.

  37. jeff061 says: Mar 14, 2012 1:03 AM

Brutal signing by the Bolts idiot management. They let V.Jackson go and sign replace him with a second tier #3 reciever, to join their other #3 receivers.

Embarassing that ownership didn’t see this coming and let AJ Smith screw this up….I’m sure Philip Rivers is wringing his hands tonight.

  38. lilrob10201 says: Mar 14, 2012 1:08 AM

Is he really worth that much ?You never know he can be a bust without having Drew Brees or he can be a boom without Drew Brees. We will see.

  39. sirdrinksalot says: Mar 14, 2012 1:12 AM

Did he even visit the Chargers? Why did he bother going to Buffalo? Must have wanted a free dinner.

  40. seahawksfan25 says: Mar 14, 2012 1:16 AM

Guess he changed his mind about buffalo like Mario Williams did.

  41. boltupbroo says: Mar 14, 2012 1:16 AM

Good pick up, now let’s fill all the other holes on our O-line and the rest of our defense….got a lot of work still to be done.

  42. drewzducks says: Mar 14, 2012 1:16 AM

Dd he have to ask Ralph Wilson to borrow a pen?

  43. jason1980 says: Mar 14, 2012 1:17 AM

Good luck Meach, we’re gonna miss ya down here in Who Dat Nation.

  44. lanjoith says: Mar 14, 2012 1:17 AM

I can guarantee one thing … Meachem won’t be wearing #17 in SD!

  45. 4evrnyt says: Mar 14, 2012 1:20 AM

Meachem’s fantasy value just shifted from undrafted in most leagues to a high Round 2.

  46. ralphwilsonphillips says: Mar 14, 2012 1:21 AM

whats that i hear…. wooooooosh….. the air going out of the Bills tires, the collective sighhhh of a city….. it happened to us AGAIN? meet the new Bills…… same as the OL bills =/

  47. sirdrinksalot says: Mar 14, 2012 1:27 AM

    Meachem is a scum sucker.

  48. girlsinthesouthlovefootball says: Mar 14, 2012 1:42 AM

Good Luck, Meach! At least we still got Sproles….and Brees. Who Dat!

  49. besdayz says: Mar 14, 2012 1:46 AM

Overpaid for a #3 or #2 at best wr.

He benefitted from Graham, Sproles, Colston, Moore, and Brees.

As an expected #1, he will not live up to the hype. He catches TDs and doesn’t drop much but he’s not a natural pass catcher and tends to fall to the ground on the catch to secure it.

His route running besides the deep stuff is questionable.

Good luck to Meach though, maybe the fanbase in SD will learn to spell his name correctly and thanks to SD for a compensatory draft pick coming the saints way from the NFL.

  50. sportsking604 says: Mar 14, 2012 2:17 AM

Good (but not great) move. You draft Stephen Hill first round and your offense is ELITE! Don’t bother making a play for a shorter wr. U need 1 more tall wr to throw in to the rotation and contribute. Also, another option is Braylon. Godspeed charger nation.

  51. phuqewe says: Mar 14, 2012 2:39 AM

Hated to lose VJ, but Floyd is really shining and Meachem will be a solid #2 WR for us. Shore up the O Line and get a kicker who can boot it into the end zone on kickoffs!

  52. kxlllxst says: Mar 14, 2012 2:51 AM

Bills are striking out so far

  53. glen1904 says: Mar 14, 2012 2:56 AM

good move for the chargers they splurged for them and you know they would never have spent more, now if they could fix their defense 10yrs without a SS and three years without a pass rush cant even win the AFC West.

  54. jigga757 says: Mar 14, 2012 3:35 AM

we gon miss u MEACH…good luck in S.D.

  55. 3menandablog says: Mar 14, 2012 3:55 AM

Rivers best season was the one Vincent Jackson sat out(12 of 16 games). This was a great move. Not much drop off at WR and more money to fill other holes.

Please sign Gaither and a pass rusher.

  56. catquick says: Mar 14, 2012 4:24 AM

Mario Williams isn’t out of the Bills picture yet. if they sign him, drafting Malcom Floyd 1st will be better than a bust no:1 from N.O.

  57. cluelessdufus says: Mar 14, 2012 4:26 AM

decent possesion reciever not fast enough to run down the field but his great leaping ability with this height makes a great fit to replace Jackson

  58. crabboil says: Mar 14, 2012 5:18 AM

What part of “downfield threat with sub 4.4 speed” makes you think he’s not fast enough to run downfield? He’s never been a possession receiver. He’s a big play waiting to happen. He is a baller and will be missed.

  59. tomsd1 says: Mar 14, 2012 6:27 AM

Hey – the Lord of NO Rings gets half the receiver at half the price. And don’t even think Vincent Brown is going to be that good.

  60. packerjer says: Mar 14, 2012 9:07 AM

Did I read taht correctly? Someone gave Robert Meachem over 6 million per year? Robert Meachem??? Hahahahahaha.

    God, I love Ted Thompson.
