Chris Cook says he slapped, pushed his ex-girlfriend in self defense

Chris Cook, Joe Webb AP

Vikings cornerback Chris Cook admitted on the stand at his assault trial Tuesday that he slapped and pushed his ex-girlfriend, but he says it was self defense.

Cook said that his ex-girlfriend punched him during an argument, and that he pushed her onto a bed. He said he then turned his back and she threw a shoe at him, which “hurt bad,” and that’s when he claims he defended himself.

I spun around and slapped her in the face,” Cook said, via the Pioneer Press.

Prosecutors say that slap ruptured the woman’s eardrum. Cook said on the stand that she also had a bloody nose.

Cook faces charges of domestic assault by strangulation and third-degree assault. The jury will begin deliberating today.

The NFL needs to flush turds like this.

…because if my girlfriend threw a shoe at me, my first reaction would be to hit to so hard I ruptured her ear drum..

    Put this chump away.

What a little punk. Chris Cook is 6 feet 2 1/2 and 223 pounds. Unless his girlfiend was about 6 feet 4 and 245lb and played linebacker I dont see the self defense claim.

  12. nflfollower says: Mar 14, 2012 7:24 AM

Sounds like brute on brute violence. But seriously, saying the shoe “hurt bad” isn’t gonna help much when u play in the NFL. That’s just the way it is.

  13. purplengold says: Mar 14, 2012 7:29 AM

And how does Mr. Cook explain the attempted strangulation?

  14. duanethomas says: Mar 14, 2012 7:35 AM

    Summary from the article:
He loved her and was going to ask her to marry him.

They went to a stripclub and she got jealous of him getting too much attention.

She got mad and went to the limo where he caught he texting her ex boyfriend “TinkerBell” expressing her love for him.

They go back to his junky one bedroom apartment and she throws a lamp, shoe and tried to throw a flat screen T.V. at him.

He then does his best Wayne Brady impersonation and goes to the clink for the weekend.

I know there is the unwritten rule that a man should never hit a woman – based solely on the premise that women are “demure”, “frail”, and “defenseless”.

However, today women are empowered to be aggressive and they start at least 50% of the physical altercations. This “rule” needs to be updated b/c today’s women are much larger, much stronger, and are apt to use weapons against there man if they don’t get their way. Plus, all they have to do is cry and any police officer/judge will immediately side with them no matter what the circumstances. They use this to their advantage along with the standard excuse “oh it was my time of the month and I wasn’t myself”

IMO, if a woman throws a shoe, a frying pan, or kicks a guy in the ‘nads, then he has every right to defend himself with whatever force he feels necessary to defend himself.

The way things are going, women can attack a guy and get away with it. The law should clearly state that there will be no special protections for women if they use any type of weapon against a man.

IMO Cook did the right thing and put this b***h in her place.

Without any knowledge of what truly happened here, you guys shouldnt call him anything.

If it was self defense, Im fine with him slapping her. Ive seen guys get their ass whipped by women before, and were too afraid to do so much as grab their arms.

If women want to be treated like men, it should be in every aspect. Not just when they want it to. (And no, Im not condoning hitting women, for the people who are going to comment on this)

  17. deeppurple23 says: Mar 14, 2012 7:48 AM

Just goes to prove, NOTHING good comes out of taking your “girl” to a strip club.

  18. discosucs2005 says: Mar 14, 2012 7:50 AM

Next time I get mugged (which happens so often in my San Francsico suburb), I’ll remember to slap in self defense.

But seriously, how hard is it for people not to hit each other in day to day life? I’m not talking about NFL athletes, or men hitting women, I mean everyone. Is it so hard to have a heated argument and not hit someone over it?

  26. CKL says: Mar 14, 2012 8:07 AM

Look, here’s the test: if the guy’s mom threw a shoe at him etc. would he b*tchslap his mother & claim “self defense”? No?? Then he should walk away.

If the woman perpetrated violence on him she should be charged for it and put away in jail. Violence is violence regardless of the perp’s gender.

  27. flavordave says: Mar 14, 2012 8:09 AM

NEVER hit a lady. But…… some of those “ladies” arent, and dont act like, “ladies. I can see the slap to snap her out of her rage. Never done it, but I could see it.

  28. buhbay1c says: Mar 14, 2012 8:14 AM

Hard to say what I would’ve done if someone whacked me in the back of the head with a shoe. Odds are most of you can’t either, but it’s easy to post the right response to an intense situation on a message board.

  29. jonny42671 says: Mar 14, 2012 8:17 AM

If it were the Packers he would have never missed a game. It would have all been some misunderstanding. Things like that don’t happen in Mamby Pamby land.

  30. sschmiggles says: Mar 14, 2012 8:19 AM

To be fair, it’s really easy for women to attack men first and then claim they were ‘assaulted.’

Which is another reason why you shouldn’t hit back unless she has a knife/bat or is trying to kill you.

Even then, the macho court system will side with your girl, thanks mostly to the macho attitudes expressed here. My friends wife broke his nose with a rolling pin during an argument, so he punched her, she claimed self defense because he was bigger, next thing he knew he’s not allowed to see his kids anymore. I guess its cool to assault people if you’re physically weaker than them.

  31. bergencountyjc says: Mar 14, 2012 8:24 AM

That was probably his biggest defensive play in his career.

  32. cup1981 says: Mar 14, 2012 8:25 AM

I don’t know the situation, nor will I comment on it directly. However, I will say this. I am this biggest advocate for a man NOT laying his hands on a woman. That said, women, if you are going to hit your man LIKE a man, you had better be prepared for him to hit you back. You hit him like a b*&ch with a shoe, he just may slap you like a b*^ch.

It’s a two-way street, men don’t hit women and women don’t you go hitting your man… There problem solved.

  33. ackattack22 says: Mar 14, 2012 8:29 AM

He’ll probably walk. Vikings fans better hope he can hit Greg Jennings, Brandon Marshall and Megatron just as hard.

  34. whodeytrox says: Mar 14, 2012 8:36 AM

Anyone one here who says ignorant s*** like “Oh she deserved it” or “he did the right thing” is a complete moron. Chris Cook is a 6’2″ 215lbs. professional athlete who gets paid millions of dollars to wrap up even larger men and bring them to the ground. He takes hits every day, and there is no way in hell anyone could convince me that a shoe getting tossed at him “hurt bad”, unless the “shoe” was a hatchet or, at very least, a brick. I’m not surprised that he failed to catch the shoe, being that he has 0 career INTs, but he should have been smart enough to use that 4.6 speed to get out of there. If you hit women, you are a loser. And if you support men who hit women, it is likely you will die alone.

  35. patfic15 says: Mar 14, 2012 8:50 AM

Why enen bring your girl to a strip club? I just don’t get that. Maybe turning 30 has changed me.

  36. rugdog100 says: Mar 14, 2012 8:52 AM

@MDS: The altercation began by her throwing a lamp that hit him in the back of the head causing a laceration behind his ear. You might also mention that 2 doctors testified that the mark on her neck1) No evidence of strangulation and 2) Was likely caused by her earring. Also, she withdrew the accusation of choking shortly after the incident, saying that she just wanted him to “go to jail” for confronting her about texting her old boyfriend. In the end, this sounds like it might be Jerry Springer material.

The shoe hurt “real bad”? What does this chick got an arm like Nolan Ryan or something? No excuse for hitting a chick no matter what, any guy knows if you mess up and p*ss your girl off there’s always a chance something’s gonna get thrown at you and normally you know when it’s coming because she’ll yell something like “go to hell!” or “you p.o.s.!!!”, but i’m not shocked he didn’t catch the shoe she threw because he apparently can’t catch anything.

  40. deeppurple23 says: Mar 14, 2012 9:03 AM

Hate to say it, but I read some of the local MN accounts of the testimony by both Cook and Baker, as well as a medical expert. It sounds that there was no attempt to strangle and he did hit her (not cool man), but in the end I’m guessing he gets off with probation, because right now it looks like she was being vindictive during a fight and wanted him to spend a night in jail. But now both are saying all he did was slap her…

All in all, you’re an NFL player, you need to be smarter and cooler than this.

The victim saying “he never strangled me” and “I just said what I thought would send him to jail that night” are pretty solid defenses I think.

  42. truthserum4u says: Mar 14, 2012 9:07 AM

The article I read just said she struck him in the head with her high-heel shoe and he instinctively turned and slapped her. I assumed she used it like a weapon in order for him to react instinctively. But if she just threw it?? Come on.

He claims she hit her head on a nightstand after he hit her, causing the reptured eardrum. A forensic pathologist and medical examiner said the marks on her neck were about the same size and shape as the earings she was wearing that night; and the broken blood vessel in her eye was not consistent with the pinpoint-type spots in the eye that are evidence of strangulation.

And after all that he was hoping they still had a future. Seriously!

I have seen a woman punch, kick, scratch, stab and heard of her try to shoot my buddy. He punched her when she stabbed him and he went to jail, wasn’t able to see his kids for a long time…he finally divorced her after the attempted gun down and now his life is great. I could only imagine how hard life would be as an over paid athlete with women draped over me, especially when most want your cash.

The moral of the story is “Dont take your boo to a strip joint if you really love them”

  48. theytukrjobs says: Mar 14, 2012 10:05 AM

He’s a 230 lb world class athlete. Sure it looks pretty clear that he didn’t choke her because the medical examiners have testified that her injuries were not consistent with being strangled, let along by a really strong dude. Since she is testifying that she lied about it then he’s pretty much off of that count.

But he hit her and restrained her. He’s too big to claim self defense when she only had a shoe. He needs to be punished for what he did. When his punishment is served he should be given a chance to resume his career.

  49. sean6886 says: Mar 14, 2012 11:06 AM

That’s not self defense, that’s retaliation. What a POS. She threw a shoe-walk away-be the better person.
