Free agent Marcus McNeill will visit Lions on Friday

AP

The Detroit Lions’ website is reporting that the team will host free agent offensive tackle Marcus McNeill at club headquarters on Friday.

Free agent cornerback Jacob Lacey, formerly of the Colts, will also be in Detroit, as well as free agent returner/receiver Ted Ginn. We talked more about Ginn’s visit in this previous post. His visit will take place Thursday.

McNeill was released by the Chargers on Tuesday, but he could be a superior option to fellow free agent Jeff Backus for the Lions. Both left tackles have obvious medical concerns, but McNeill is 28 years old. Backus turns 35 this fall.

The free agent visit will be McNeill’s first since his release.

He is the No. 27 overall player on PFT’s Hot 100 list.

  1. Would of loved to have seen us pick up fb vickers, murry gonna plow 1500+ runnin behind him. mcneill could be a solid grab at a cheap price because of his injury history. Hightower wit 23rd pick. book it.

I’m thinking we might take Mark Barron. I’d rather just move Levy back to MLB than have to spend one more play with Spievey as our starting SS.

  3. They really need a veteran back that can help block on passing downs…..a big back……one with attitiude and will punch ya in the mouth………….Brandon Jacobs. Its been a long time, if ever, that we had a guy like that to get the tough yards and help pass protection.

  4. Would be nice to have all three of these guys. They freed up a lot of cap space yesterday. Wouldn’t mind resigning Backus if he was willing to work cheap for depth at least, possibly move him to guard or RT.

Lions need to get Avril signed long-term to free up cap space. Once other DEs on the market get signed in free agency he’ll know his market value and they should be able to work out something fair.

  5. I hope McNeill’s injuries are behind him and he gets another shot on a good team. He’s a good LT and a great guy. Was sorry to see him leave San Diego.
