Garçon’s deal comes close to DeSean’s

136068092_crop_650x440 Getty Images

Receiver Pierre Garçon hasn’t consistently played like a No. 1 wideout.  But the Redskins have decided to pay him like one.

As usual, the original reports of a big-money deal make the deal seem much bigger than it is.  Still, Garçon will be pocketing plenty of cash, especially in comparison to one of the other receivers who plays in the NFC East.

Per a source with knowledge of the deal, Garçon will be paid $13.1 million in fully guaranteed money, via an $11 million signing bonus and a $2.1 million base salary in 2012 that is guaranteed for skill/injury/cap.  Garçon’s $5.6 million base salary in 2013 is guaranteed for injury, and it becomes fully guaranteed on the third day of the 2013 league year.  Another $1.8 million of Garçon’s 2014 base salary of $7.1 million is guaranteed for injury on signing, and fully guaranteed on the third day of the 2014 league year.

In contrast, DeSean Jackson received $15 million in fully guaranteed money, with another $3 million guaranteed for injury only.

So, basically, what the heck are the Redskins thinking?

In the Garçon deal, the base salaries for 2015 and 2016 are $7.1 million and $7.6 million, respectively.  Also, Garçon will receive per-game bonuses of up to $250,000 per season, based on whether he’s on the 46-man game-day active roster.  He is eligible for annual workout bonuses of $150,000.

It adds up to a five-year deal with a maximum value of $42.5 million.  Though several million lower than the five-year, $47 million deal signed on Wednesday by Jackson, it’s close enough to make folks wonder whether the Redskins are expecting too much from a guy who never had had a 1,000-yard season and who has generated, on average, four touchdown passes per year.

Then again, the fact that Garçon caught 70 passes for 947 yards from the Kerry Collins/Curtis Painter/Dan Orlovsky combo platter is encouraging.  Likewise, the fact that Garçon got his deal on the open market while Jackson was limited by the franchise tag should be regarded as a major factor.

This isn’t a question of whether Jackson got a great deal.  Given his situation, his size, and his history, he did.  The point is that the Redskins went a little berserk on Tuesday.

Apparently, they did.

Which is a complete joke. Skins overpaid like usual and the Eagles had Jackson in a head lock for the past couple years and the kid ends up signing a bad deal because he needs money.

How is it, that every year, there are a handful of teams with “no money to spend”, but sign a ton of players. And teams with lots of cap room, cant seem to afford impact players???

Is it something with the way the contracts are written? Are the Skins (the example I am using) writing cap friendly contracts now, that are going to put them in cap jail in 3 years???

  4. zilla1126 says: Mar 14, 2012 7:09 PM

Lets see. The Redskins signed a WR who can’t run consistent routes, are getting ready to draft a athlete-QB who has never been required to throw on time, and they have a control-freak offensive coordinator who runs a precision west-coast passing game which requires everything to go like clockwork.

    Sounds about right.

It’s good to have a receiver that’s used to a quarterback carousel.

    So Mike,

Are you saying Jackson is a #1 WR? Many Eagles fans will disagree with you and I live in the Philly market. But I know, it’s always easier to write that the Skins always overpay. Not all their moves have been bad over the years.

Garcon is tough, very strong and not afraid of anyone. saw him crack ray Louis than jump in his face like what are you going to do about it. and he can run after the catch. Sad to see him leave Indy but Skins fan you will be happy with him.

Its not the number of catches Garcon had that should be encouraging.

Its the number of passes he dropped that should be discouraging.

But hey, fans have been excited about other talented receivers that couldn’t catch. Braylon Edwards comes to mind.

yeah…. good luck with that Skins.

Lets see, Jackson is a one trick pony and is afraid to take a hit over the middle, Plus he is a head case and a diva who shuts down when thing don’t go his way.

Garcon – Tough, strong and reliable. He will also block, something that Jackson doesnt like to do.

    Advantage Redskins.

Hmm…Garcon’s numbers are very solid, and he will run routes that Desean is unwilling or incapable of running.

Gracon will block, and he does not have a history of concussions.

Oh, and let’s not forget Garcon will not crap on a locker room when he feels it is his perogative to do so.

In the end, wisdom tells me to take the hard working class act over the diminutive one trick pony that most defensive backs love to grind into the turf and who hasn’t played a complete season in years.

  15. scutzi128 says: Mar 14, 2012 7:35 PM

Anyone saying Desean is not a #1 wr is a fool. He can change the dynamic of a game in one play and is a huge reason LeSean has been as successful as he has.

  16. johnnycamparm says: Mar 14, 2012 7:41 PM

Jackson is Mike Wallace 1.0. all he does is go deep, or run a quick slant, that he make break for a big gain. The Eagles overpaid Jackson like someone will overpay Wallace… It just won’t be the Steelers…

  17. kpow55 says: Mar 14, 2012 7:41 PM

The skins have to overpay, it’s just the way it is. You can make 75% of what you are worth to play on a team with an actual chance of making it out of the wildcard round or 125% to play for Snyder’s pet project

Desean Jackson’s only been in the league for 4 years and has only missed 4 games in that time….but nice try moron! As far as Hands of Stone Garcon goes, I’m sure if you asked the defensive coordinators around the league which WR worries them more Jackson or Garcon, I’m pretty sure we know the answer to that one!

  19. kylemc1986 says: Mar 14, 2012 7:44 PM

You truly find out how good a player is when his team is down in the dumps. Garcon numbers have increased every year in the league while Desean’s have gone down. Griffin to Garcon just has a good sound to it.

  20. laeaglefan says: Mar 14, 2012 7:45 PM

“kid ends up signing a bad deal because he needs money”

Whose fault is it that he couldn’t make ends meet on half a million a year? But I am surprised that he settled for the deal that he did. This wreaks of another T.O. situation for the Eagles in a year or two when/if DeSean feels that he’s “outplayed” his contract.

Garcon has missed 4 games in his 4 year career…

Jackson has missed 4 games in his 4 year career…(one to suspension/benching froom the Eagles)

Those of you saying Jackson is injury-prone…you are wrong. He has remained as healthy as anyone can expect. (Would any of you have survived the dirty hit vs. Atl?)

Jackson is a 2 trick pony…He goes deep, and he catches screens and get mega YaC.

Garcon played with the Greatest QB ever to suit up…and still never produced as Jackson has with above average QB’s at best.

Jackson dictates defensive coverages on every play…don’t play over the top him…I dare you.

Not a big fan of D-Jack really…he angered me last season…but anyone saying Garcon is a bigger threat…get real.

2012 is gonna be a good year for the Eagles!

    378 yds rushing and 3tds
1228 total return yards and 4 return tds

Garcon: 2519 yds receiving, 16 tds
    44 yds rushing 0 tds
524 total return yards, 0 tds

Yeah, I guess the Skins got a great deal there after all!

The good news is that the Skins got Morgan, who’s very underrated. I have a hard time trusting guys who play with Peyton or Brees. Meacham and Garcon scare me a little, but we will see.

If Morgan played in those offenses you all would know who he is; if RG3 is who the Skins think he is Morgan will blow up.

Maybe I am the only one bugged by this but the “c” in Garcon’s name appears not to be an English letter.

Here in America, we write names in English. I have never seen , for example, PHT refer to Alex Ovechkin using those whacky Russian letters. “Ovechkin” is apparently the English translation of whatever his “real” name is.

Write it in English please, using the 26 English letters.

I am a Ravens fan, so I don’t have a dog in this fight. (Sorry Vick). I like Garcon but he isn’t in the same class as DeSean Jackson. Jackson dictates coverage. He is a threat to take it to the house every time he touches the ball. And his ability to return punts makes him all the more dangerous.

Any of you Redskin fans trying to come up with reasons that Garcon is better than DeSean are out of your minds. As I said, I like Garcon, but he is being paid as a #1 receiver and has never been more than a 2 or 3. You better hope he is as good as you paid.

Typical Redskin fans and typical Redskin team. They win the Vince Lombardi trophy of the off season almost every year and still manage to finish in the bottom of their division.

Jackson was paid fairly for what he does, Garcon is way over paid. He is a average WR. Jackson is a duel threat and just because he had an off year (Where Vick was hurt for much of it and he still got 1000 yards) doesn’t mean his production won’t go back up. Jackson is a playmaker and can score from anywhere on the field. He can return punts for TDs. He will have a monster year now that the contract issue is behind him.

I’m getting a chuckle from dirty-delphia talking about over paying and/ or going crazy during FA. How quickly we forget that they tried to buy every FA and a SB title last off season only to fall flat on their faces. Truely an embarrassment to be quite honest considering what you paid. Remind me how many trophies you guys have in that case, one, two, three??? Oh no, the Skins have 3 with the addition of RG3. Maybe you’ll get all those turds to play this season. Maybe that dog murderer you call a QB can stay on his feet long enough to win a playoff game instead of in the dirt where he belongs. MAYBE LIL VICKY will go an entire season without crying about how unfair the refs are with their no calls? Maybe that fat turd of a coach(clearly a terrible father as well) could put a cheese steak down long enough to coach you guys to the SB considering everybody he bought last season. You’ll probably just continue to be the most horrid fan base in the NFL/sports who talk all day b/c every other team in the NFC-E has accomplished the ultimate goal multiple times except for you. Next time you’re gonna be all over our N*ts give us a heads up and we’ll throw a little peanut butter on them for you for your pleasure!!! Here’s to D. Ah yes. Typical that the first 20 comments are filled with a bunch of dummy Eagles fans. Always. Is it that they are going schitzo by not having anymore of those 12-4 seasons and losing in the playoffs anymore? Must be.

Jackson is fast. He gets doubled and doesn’t want to be on the Eagles. You would think they would pay him since all they have is Maclin, but I guess that’s typical for the Schmeagles…they never have valued receivers.

As for Garcon, the ‘skins are paying him Moss’ salary and value character and hardwork. He should have less drops and less injuries…we shall see. It’s a team in Shanahan’s offense, not 2 players. All you Eagle’s fans just need to face the music and purchase a Griffin jersey for this season.

  49. rg3isvictory says: Mar 14, 2012 9:06 PM

    @ppdoc
You just have Redskin envy bud. I would too if my team packed up in the middle of the night and left town because my owner couldn’t get a deal to build a new stadium and decided to skip town instead. While I don’t dislike the ravens, I can’t stand gayven fans always hating on the Skins because they spend money and haven’t gotten results for it. The whole winning the off season was apropos when there were acquisitions like Archuletta, Bruce Smith, Neon Dieon, etc…etc…. Keep in mind good old Ozzie can’t draft QB, WR, or FB to save his life. Far all the hate you have because DC is a more wealthy city with much more culture/history concentrate on all the positive you have in your life instead of being so negative about a franchise that doesn’t wear a terribly ugly uniform, and has a flying rat as a mascot. Here is a list of QB’s Ozzie has drafted. Let me know how they worked out.
2011- Tyrod Taylor (burning the league up)
2008- Flacco (can’t make decisions fast enough to get the Ravens to the SB with one hell of a line.)
2007- Troy Smith (no longer with the team)
2005- Derek Anderson (no longer with the team)
    2004- Josh Harris (WHO???)
2003- Kyle Boller (but he could throw 60yds from his knees)
    2002- Wes Pate (once again……WHO?)

The NFL is similar to a sine curve in that you have down years, and you have up years. The Skins have been on a down slide, but they are finally doing things the right way. Stop your hate spew. Not all of your draft picks/free agent signings have all panned out. Boldin hasn’t lived up to his contract. You are hanging on to Ray Lewis too long. The Skins will win a super bowl before the Ravens do.

If my Skins sign a big named player, they’re hated on. If we sign young talent with potential, we’re hated on. If we sign old vets past their prime, we’re hated on. Simply put, people love to hate our Redskins! It doesn’t matter if we’d signed Jackson and Nicks, the Redskins Hating Nation would still have something negative to say.

Garcon is a young receiver that can stretch the field with his speed. Nothing at all wrong with signing this guy. He fits perfectly with what RG III and Shanny are accustomed to playing/coaching with. Josh Morgan has been widely viewed as an underutilized talent, yet those who hate the Skins can’t see that either. We finally do something intelligent, and no love. I swear I’m shocked by the hating.

I even read someone who questions RG III’s abilities, even though some PROFESSIONALS believe the Colts are thinking twice about who to draft. RG III is a super intelligent, super athletic QB who will excel what Cam Newton did as a rookie. Mark it down haters, we’ve finally acquired our franchise QB and it feels oh so good!

For all those hating on Garcon, here’s a little something to think about…

In 2011, Garcon finished the season with only 5 drops out of 123 targets. That’s the 15th-best drop/target ratio in the NFL last year. Oh, and let’s not forget he put up nearly 1000 yards on the worst team in the league with a string of terrible QBs at the helm. The Skins aren’t paying Garcon based on what he did in the past, a bad habit they’re finally trying to break, they’re paying him based on his potential. Whether he lives up to this potential is another matter, but for now it is a good deal.

So Basically This Is a 3 year deal for Approx. $18 Mill with $13 Million Guaranteed … Not A Terrible Deal, When You REALLY Break It down

    @tfbuckfutter
10-6 in 2005. At least write something factual. That same year b-more went 6-10 homey. Get your facts straight. There is your double digit win total.

I don’t care how much he got paid really, good for him.

At least I don’t have to watch him drop passes from Luck this year.

DuncantheP_ssy, your original post implied that Desean was somehow less durable and physically unreliable than Garcon, which in fact, is just not true. Desean has missed 3 games do to injury, regardless of whether it was from the concussion on the illegal hit by Dunta or it was any other injury. By comparison, Garcon has missed 4 games in that same span due to injury so your hilarious little reply, much like your life, was pathetic and pointless!
As far as your little ” empty trophy case” comment, it’s so funny and original! It might actually have stung a little if it had come from a fan of a team that’s been relevant more than once in the past 20 years!!! But hey, look at the bright side, you have the Wizards, Capitals and Nationals terrific playoff runs to look forward to this year….oh wait.

Good for Pierre. He’s a good #2 the Skins overpaid for so what else is new? They’ll get RGIII, ruin him, and start all over again in 5 yrs. We would have love to have kept Garcon, but for about half the price. I don’t see how he’s going to get better without Manning coaching him. Granted, Manning didn’t play last season, but don’t think for a second he didn’t drive those recievers insane with details. He works with them pretty much year round. RGIII isn’t going to ever be a Manning, but he is very intelligent and a super aathlete. I see him as Vick with brains. But still … he is going to need a coach for several years whereas Manning pretty much was the OC.

Pierre may do OK, but I have a feeling that he’ll be waived or traded before his contract will be up cuz he won’t won’t have the numbers to back up the salary.

But being a Colts fan…I truly hope he ends up lighting it up, because he has amazing character and is a wonderful story.

Good for Garcon, at the expense of the retarded Redskins brass.
