Jaguars sign Chad Henne to push Blaine Gabbert

Tania Ganguli of the Florida Times Union reports that the Jaguars have signed quarterback Chad Henne to a two-year contract.

The Jaguars claim publicly that 2011 first-round pick Blaine Gabbert is their signal caller of the future, but based on Gabbert’s rookie-year performance, it wouldn’t be the least bit surprising if Henne outplayed him in preseason games.

Henne is hardly without drawbacks, of course. He struggles to complete passes downfield and is limited athletically. Both quarterbacks possess plenty of arm strength, but Gabbert’s pocket presence and awareness were brutal last season and Henne is a tentative passer.

The Jags are hoping that the light will flip on for at least one of them this year.

Henne was the No. 52 overall player on the PFT Hot 100.

  1. Blaine can do it.

It’s incredible how rookie QBs are now expected to be Peyton in his prime.

  2. I dont see either of these guys playing any better at all. They should have kept David G’s

  3. Hmm, wasn’t Gabbert the can’t loose QB pick of last years draft?

Wonder what will happen with all of this years “can’t miss” QB’s.

  4. Niners dodged a bullet by not drafting Gabbert at #7. Like all the ‘EXPERTS’ said too. Aldon Smith looks like a steal now.

  5. Henne is perfect backup. The guy who is getting “pushed” is Jake Locker in Tennessee. Down to third string on the depth chart. Darling of the pea brain pundits.

  6. Means they think Manning is not going to sign with Denver and then of course Tebow won’t be traded to the Jags.

  7. After watching Blaine Gabbert, the Jaguars saw some Chad Henne film and thought they were looking at Joe Montana.

They’ll be no pushing. That will be Henne’s job.

  8. ^^^
Then you sign Garrard in Seattle… Local talk show host called him “Larry Lock-on” because Garrard wouldn’t look off of the primary target to other open receivers…

  9. As a Dolphins Fan, I hope he does well in Jax. He got a bum deal in Miami. The playcalling by a 70+ year old OC was so conservative, he had no choice but to make checkdowns if the primary was not open. When new OC, Dabol shows up Henne lights up the Scoreboard until he got hurt. The fans and media rode Henne like no other. He will be a Starter and put up decent numbers, but needs to know when to take a Sack or dump it. He lacks mobility and when he tried to make something happen, it resulted in very critical INTs.

    Good Luck Chad!

  10. All Henne has to do to be a starter is to learn how to “tap it in.”

Once he can lead his receivers with the ball instead of the receivers showing him where to throw it, Henne is going to be good.

    @seakwaksfan,

You know it’s tough to throw a football when out for the season with back issues right? What’s Jackson’s excuse?
    _____________________________________________________________

He played with a damn near tore pectoral what’s Gannett’s excuse..? I remember seeing someone post a picture of him throwing the ball with his eyes closed lol!!! Tell him his accuracy may improve if he stops bein afraid of getting hit.

  12. What, is Gabbert in a wheel chair or something? How could Henne push anybody? He needs to push himself first

Who are you the darling of then? Gabbert has out-of-the-league-soon bust written all over him! You have to be kidding me?

Henne gives the Jags a respectable starter…

  14. Gabbert will be given the starting job, I just hope they pull him after a few bad games and really give Henne an unbiased chance if he can start proving himself in games.

I’d say the Redskins also dodged a bullet by not drafting Gabbert at 10 last year, but they are smart enough to know he sucks…unlike San Fran. It would be a monumental turnaround if he is starting in the NFL by the end of the year.

  16. Its funny that Gabbert has been buried by this site and the national media as a failure. He struggled, but definitely showed glimpses of being a top QB, and why he was regarded by all the experts 1/2 QB in the draft with Newton. Garrard got hurt, he got thrown in there, and had a tough year with no receiving talent and 31 Jags on IR. Early candidate for comeback player of the year.

  17. I love all these jax haters

commenting on our team while there team does nothing. Can they really all be Giants fans?

    Our team got better today.

  18. If Chad Henne was pretty good before he got hurt last year and was having a good season I would hate to see mediocre or bad. He had a 79 passer rating, 57% comp., less than 8 yrds/comp. and had 4 TD’s, 4 int in less than 4 full games. Somebody stated that he can throw any pass which is probably accurate. What wasn’t mentioned is that he can’t complete many of them. Good Luck with the Henne experiment.

And yet jack wagons still bring up tebow. Now one wants him, let alone would trade for him.

you think blaine gabbert has more trade value than tebow? and no, i’m not a tebow fan, i just think he’s worthy to play in the nfl.

blaine gabbert closes his eyes when he sees defenders coming.

  20. Good luck Chad..

Alot of people forget that in week 1 Chad threw for over 400 yards in week 1…Too bad Brady threw for 500.

He’s a decent QB, that should crack the line-up. I’m not sure what is going on in Miami but Jacksonville made a good move.

Personally I would have gone after Jason Campbell (before he signed with Chi of coarse).

  21. Everyone here is giving thumbs down to the Tebow trade to Jacksonville. I am his biggest fan but like it or not, if Peyton goes to Denver Tebows gone to Jacksonville. I hope Manning goes somewhere else but if not… Well, Go Jacksonville!!

Exactly. I don’t know what planet the people were on who claimed that Henne was having a “pretty good” season last year, but it sure as hell wasn’t Earth. And they sure didn’t watch any Dolphins games. Henne has ALWAYS been a mediocre inconsistent inaccurate quarterback going back to his college days. The idea that a new offensive coordinator is suddenly going to change that is pure fantasy.

You must be a Brandon Marshall fan. You conveniently left out the 5 TD passes Marshall dropped in the first 4 games, or the fact that the right side of the line was a revolving door, or that the run game was nonexistent in the beginning of the year. While you are cherry picking stats, why don’t you try explaining how Henne was the overall 9th ranked QB in the league, at the time of his injury. Good luck. Henne was a whipping boy for some ignorant Miami fans, but he is far better than he gets credit for.

  24. Yeah Henne “lights up the scoreboard” all the to a 0-4 record before getting injured. Good riddance. Miami will improve at that position even if they simply start Matt Moore again. I hope to see them sign Matt Flynn.

  25. Tebow is from Jax. That is where the conversation should end. If you honestly think this team has any interest in him, you are an easily led sheep. Yes the owner made a comment in relation to a direct question about him. He also said he is leaving the personnel decisions up to the GM. The head coach just came out and said, we have not even thought about him. You can tell he story over and over again, but it won’t make it any more true. Denver may very well get Peyton. It will have no bearing on the Jags QB depth chart.

  26. Gabbert gets alot of grief for his performance last season. He wasn’t great but his rating was still better than all 2009 first round QB’s (Stafford, Sanchez, Freeman) their rookie year.

  27. Henne WILL beta Gabbert out this season unless he hurts himself again. He is not the glamour boy Ross was looking for in a QB. He will surprise with arm strength and football acumen.

  28. I hope he tears it up in J-Ville I’ll be rooting for him until he plays the Phins. I’m already considering him the starter there. He didn’t stand a chance with the mess in Miami but still had a decent start 2 picks that shouldn’t count btw 1. Vs NE last second no reason to throw into a crowd the game was over 2. Vs Texans backed up around the 7 Mark Bumbo got owned like always n it was tipped and picked off. Marshall dropped a TD and to make him look worse Johnson caught the same pass but thrown way in front where he had to dive n brought it in. Henne dropped a TD in Marshall’s hands perfectly like nothing but net. Henne may not be elite and hardly anyone likes him but I also see how it says he’s “limited athletically” which is complete bull he kept plays alive so many times a game and picked up first downs on his own because the line couldn’t prevent a sack n he gets dissed for athleticism as well. We always started at the 10 or worse multiple times a game n every time Gates took it out if it was a decent return it got called back always holding on Trusnik and otherwise it was times Gates needed to just stay put.Bush wasn’t in his groove yet Thomas had a monster game the fumble was a killer but the next week he showed what hes capable of again he was a few yards short of 100 in his first 2 games. Good luck to Henne he showed a lot of heart in those few games. Matt Moore did a hell of a job those first couple weeks as well until finally they figured something out got the running game going but even Moore had a TD robbed by his own teammate (Marshall) in his first start when Marshall was going to be a “monster” but ran out of bounds rather than take a free TD so forget that coward Marshall we will be fine without him and we have a full offseason if we have to ride with Moore so be it I’ll go down with the ship n die before I jump on another teams ship
