Perrish Cox: The 49ers know what kind of guy I am

Perrish Cox, the troubled cornerback who signed with San Francisco a week and a half after he was acquitted of rape, says there are no concerns about his character.

Cox said he personally met 49ers owner Jed York and General Manager Trent Baalke “so they could figure out what kind of guy I am.”

Although he did not address the specifics of the case against him, Cox said he has assured the 49ers that he’ll never be an off-field problem.

“I never want to be in the position that I was in before ever again,” Cox said. “That’s not me. I’m not that type of guy. To prove that, I will show the community, and the coaches, and the team, what type of guy I am, and can be. From here on out, I’ll show it.”

Cox said he learned a lesson from his legal case about not being in the wrong place at the wrong time.

“I just shouldn’t have been in that whole [situation],” he said. “Whatever happened that day, night, whatever happened … it shouldn’t have happened. Like I said, I should have been smarter and I shouldn’t have put myself in that position. That’s just my goal from here on out – never put myself in that of position again.”

When Cox landed in San Francisco, it seemed out of character for a no-nonsense coach like Jim Harbaugh. If Cox is legitimately dedicated to keeping his nose clean off the field, however, this was a good move for the 49ers.
