Saints to host run-stuffing linebacker David Hawthorne

ESPN.com’s Pat Yasinskas reports that the Saints are scheduled to host linebacker David Hawthorne for a free agent visit on Friday.

The Saints are believed to be weighing the release of middle linebacker Jonathan Vilma, due to declining production and a $5.4 million base salary. Vilma is also due a $100,000 offseason workout bonus.

A top-50 player on the PFT Hot 100, Hawthorne is a two-down thumper on the inside. He could potentially also play strong-side ‘backer in New Orleans’ 4-3 scheme, although we suspect the Saints would insert Hawthorne as their starting middle linebacker if they signed him following Friday’s meeting.

And that could cost Vilma his roster spot.

Bring your checkbook Hawthorne, playing defense in New Orleans can get expensive if you don’t win the bounty pot.

Vilma is the captain and we just need lb badly, we need experience lb anyway we can get them

You are purely speculating about Vilma. He isn’t going anywhere. Why would they release one of the best pass coverage linebackers for a two-down thumper on the inside (your words)? This is a pass happy league.

    Seattle better resign him.

  6. jackntorres says: Mar 14, 2012 11:06 PM

Hawthorne does have 7 INTs and 15 PDs in 3 years starting. That’s a career for some CBs. Not bad for a two-down thumper on the inside (again, your words).

Vilma was slowed down only because he was injured all year.. If he’s gets cut its because he was going to have a long suspension.

I love Philly’s free agenfy moves so far . Todd Herremens and Trent Cole received their long due extensións . They got a steal for Desaen (hell, pierre Garcon got very close to
the same amount as D.Jax) .They are now very in deep negotiations with Shady McCoy …… Now all they must to
is re-sign LG Evan Mathis (or sign a
equally talented LG. They also need a solid LB. Stephen Tulloch & Curtis lofton he mold perfectly. Or they can
A couple picks , move up and get B.C’s tackling machine Luke Kuechly (future star IMO. They also need a redzone

    threat , maybe Plax

it’s amazing how folks believe a team had a bounty system to injure players…what a friggin joke…no such thing ever happened…media and nfl truly believed this nonsense…players just had side bets on who could get most turnovers with legal hits..yes, it’s against league rules, but take the fine and move on…this bounty crap is wayyyy overblown…Roger Goodell Flag Football League is under way

How greedy is this guy? Salary isn’t enough for this guy? If he’s looking for a place to win a lil side money he’ll sign tomorrow.

  17. dobberdubinsky says: Mar 15, 2012 4:04 AM

Seahawks surprising D is what led the team to a respectable record. They need to do whatever they can to keep the core of their defense which includes David Hawthorne.

  20. egools says: Mar 15, 2012 12:47 PM

Vilma would look nice in Philly green.
