Vikings re-sign Guion for three years, $9 million

Minnesota Vikings v Kansas City Chiefs Getty Images

Adam Caplan of TheSidelineView.com reports that the Vikings have reached an agreement with defensive tackle Letroy Guion on a three-year contract.

The deal is worth $9 million, per Caplan, and contains $2.5 million guaranteed.

Though considered a physically gifted, three-technique style tackle, Guion has been a disappointment when given opportunities for significant playing time in Minnesota. He’s managed just two sacks in 39 career appearances.

The Vikings appear to be paying Guion based on what they envision him doing in the future. He’s still only 25 years old.

Guion has not been a disappointment. The guy has played well when given the chance, and was not expected to contribute right away.

He was a developmental draft pick and is solid. Learn about the players before you write idiotic comments about them.

Are the vikings ever going to make any REAL moves in free agency? Did anyone watch them play last year? I guess they want another 3-13 team.

The Vikings better lock up Colin Loeffler(Longsnapper) to a multi-year deal quick! Since it’s obvious we have our priorities in order, I’m sure that’s the next bit of brilliance to come from Winter Park.

A bargain if he realizes his potential, which could come this year if he beats out Remi whatshisname for a spot on the defensive line. If he doesn’t, it’ll be nice to have some experienced depth on defense.

Guion has shown flashes of being a quality starter, but he needs to keep getting better. If he doesn’t have a solid year this year, that contract may ensure that he’s gone

I’m glad that in a team full of needs our top priorities were to go out and re-sign a back up DL and sign an injury prone soon to be back up TE. Nice work Spielman.

I really don’t care that the Vikings aren’t signing any free agents. At least they are accepting that they are rebuilding. There isn’t anyone guy that would turn us into a winner right now. If they do sign someone I hope they aren’t some aging person.

How bout some moves at DB? They have 1 good corner and that’s it. Maybe instead of signing a TE and a d lineman, they should focus on what got them to their 3-13 record. Im not saying lets go out and sign blockbuster names but a safety and a corner would be nice.

I don’t want my D-tackle being a sack master… that’s what Jared Allen is paid to do.

You clearly don’t know what you are talking about. The best run teams don’t go out and sign a bunch of big money free agents. They draft and develop their players.

A big name player can only fill one hole, the purple have many, many, holes.

  14. canonroad says: Mar 14, 2012 3:57 PM

I’m afraid some just don’t get it. Yes, Guion hasn’t been a pro bowler. But like the article mentions…he is only 25. He has 3 years of experience is is only 25…that’s so rare. He has a huge upside…and I think I’d rather re-sign a guy like him, rather than drafting a guy in the 5th-6th round who will take 1/2 the season just to get his feet under him. This makes sense.

But the Vikings aren’t one of the best run teams. And a big-money free agent QB (Brett Favre) almost took them to the Super Bowl a few years ago.

i’ve always guion since we drafted him all he needs is some more reps so lockin him up was a good move by my vikes!

  18. wyofootballfan says: Mar 14, 2012 4:28 PM

Minn needs corners and a safety. They aren’t going to get all that in the draft. Sign a quality starter, not a huge name but someone who is better than Benny sapp. They arent going anywhere for the next couple years and they can’t rely on the draft to fill all the holes. They tried that last year and look. Get a couple vets in there

SIGN A CORNER!!! SIGN A CORNER!!!
    says the clueless masses….

So who do you want them to chase now, William Gay, Tracy Porter, or Richard Marshall?

  20. getadealdonealready says: Mar 14, 2012 5:11 PM

Guion couldn’t beat out Ayodele, prior to McNabb getting benched he had more tackles then Ayodele. How is that worth 3 mil a year?

They have had this guy for years and he can’t crack the starting lineup on a lousy 3-13 team.

That is the kind of player you give a multimillion contract to so your cap dollars are on the bench watching the game.

With the cap at 120 million, giving 9 million dollar contracts to bench warmers is not going to get this team any better.

Moves like this get GM’s fired.

    ———————————-

But you’re not signing anyone for just one year, their being added to help the rebuilding process. Using that approach they should trade Allen, Peterson, Williams, Winfield & Greenway since their not turning the Vikes into winners right now either.

mattsg22 said REAL moves, not big money. Most teams use both the draft & free agency. The Pats signed Chad Ocho, M Anderson & A Carter and the Giants Rolle, Canty, Boley & Baase. The Pats, Saints, 49ers, Packers, Lions & Giants have all been active in pursuing free agents this year.

    ———————————-

But is it fair to judge them after one season inwhich they didn’t have the chance to work together in the off-season? And that’s also taking it to the extreme of what I think most Vikings’ fans want as far as activity.

    @ brewdogg

Wouldn’t Porter or Marshall be one of the best DBs on the Vikings if they signed? (Obviously not for ridiculous money though.)

    ———————————–

Yes, but right now that’s not saying much…. Now consider the price Marshall just got. expect Porter to get something similar. that’s 1/4 of their cap room, and for what? Neither of them is the type that can lock down a WR one-on-one, so the benefit to the Vikings is less, given the state of the secondary. I guess I would rather see them run out some youngsters and see who survives a trial by fire. If they manage to find a competent corner and safety, then they will be in a position for a veteran to make a difference.

But let’s assume that they do manage to get Porter. In that case, I think they would be better off making a hard run at a LT before they are all gone and using their pick on Claiborne. At least that way they have actually fixed one position and can then focus on the others next year. But this year, I’m hoping for a safety and guard yet this year, and then Kalil should shore up the line for the near future, and if the safety can give some leadership to the young CBs on the team, we can find out if any of them are worthy of being a starter.

But maybe that’s why I am sitting here talking to you instead of at Winter Park talking to Spielman……
