Woody Johnson is saying the Jets “passed on” Peyton Manning

Peyton Manning never wanted to play for the New York Jets.

But Jets owner Woody Johnson has a different kind of take.

We passed on him,” Johnson told the Fox Business Network, via the New York Daily News. “Our fans expect us to look at every opportunity.” Johnson went on to heap praise on Mark Sanchez.

In Johnson’s mind, the Jets actually decided Sanchez was a better option than Manning. Mark Sanchez over Peyton Manning. For real.

“Sanchez is not leaving,” Johnson proclaimed. “We’ve got a pretty good tether. We’ve got five years. We like Mark.”

  1. As a Bills fan I think I’m more excited about Sanchez’s extension than almost anything the Bills could do themselves in FA, outside of Mario Williams.

  2. Anybody notice that Woody is starting to sound more and more like his headcoach…….bag of hotair.

  3. Yeah, and they passed on Vincent Jackson, too. And now it looks like they’re passing on Mario Williams…

  4. The owner is as mentally impaired as the coach. This explains A LOT. There is so much egotism with this franchise — sensitivity — that is the driving force behind all this spin — this damage control. No wonder Parcells and Belichick jumped ship when ownership was transferred to Woody.

  5. How this guys is not in the discussion of worst owner intp the league. He just as delusion as jerry jones, apparently like his g.m. and defends rexy.

  6. LOL- LOL.. Mark Sanchez better than Peyton Manning? I’d take Kyle Orton over Sanchez.. good way to save some face though there pal.. pump up the silver spoon kid even more

  7. Articles like this need to come with a disclaimer to put down and swallow any food and drink you have.

I don’t think anyone believes this guy.

  8. yeah right.

Peyton would have opened a nasty pandoras box by becoming a Jet.

Woody is just stroking Sanchez since he’s stuck with him now.

    Good Luck with that.

  9. You have a different interpretation than I do.

Both views can easily be true. Manning may never have wanted to go to the Jets but I am sure at some point the Jets management had the discussion – “Should we try for him?” and they decided not to. There could be hundred different reasons why they reached this decision. But most likely it was a combination of Manning’s pricetag, Manning’s expectation to be allowed to do whatever he wants, and the fact that no one even knows if he can play much less what sort of longevity he would have.

Keeping Sanchez doesn’t necessarily mean they think he is better than Manning, but maybe that Manning is just too big a risk when they already have a quarterback that, while not great, is not a total disaster.

  10. Mark Sanchez may perceive himself as Peyton Manning, the New York Jets may perceive Mark Sanchez as Peyton Manning, heck Mark Sanchez’s friends might even perceive him as Peyton Manning. But at the end of the day, you can’t hide the truth and the truth of the matter is that the rest of the NFL as well as every single non-Jets fan doesn’t have to perceive anything. They already know he sucks.

  11. That sounds like something a Jets official would say. Then again, they know their fan base is, well, slow. They’ve been accustomed to drinking the kool aid even before fat boy Nostradumas started making predictions.

  12. “In Johnson’s mind, the Jets actually decided Sanchez was a better option than Manning. Mark Sanchez over Peyton Manning. For real.”

Ironically, in trying to save face he could end up making himself and the front office look truly incompetent. Only one team can sign Peyton Manning, and there are a number of teams interested in him, so not getting him would be a minor failure at worst. If Peyton Manning never recovers well enough to play at anywhere near his former level of play, then the Jets “passing” on Manning could look like a really smart move. If he is able to play at a high level, and Sanchez doesn’t make some dramatic improvements, then the Jets “decision” will appear to be one of the more moronic decisions I can remember…and there will be plenty of Jets fans calling for the heads of everyone in the front office. It’s a needless risk, however. The Jet were never realistically in play for Peyton Manning. Manning demands discipline from his teammates, and that’s not exactly the way the Jets have been doing things lately.

  13. Hahahhahahhahahhaah @. Woody.

Sanchez is horrible. I have never seen a qb more afraid to throw the ball. If the jets had even a decent qb they may have already won a title.

  14. I’m not an NFL Owner/Manager but using ‘tether’ isn’t super cool to use when describing an employee. Defined as : A rope, chain, or similar restraint for holding an animal in place, allowing a short radius in which it can move about.

Can we just start calling him Sanchey the Slave?

  15. “Sanchez was a better option than Manning.”

Using that logic Browning Nagle must be better than Brett Favre who was taken one player ahead of him in the draft.

Sanchez is simply the worst QB in the NFl. Even if the Jets passed on Manning they would have been better of cutting Sanchez and picking up any bum off the street. Manning could throw left handed and would still be better than Sanchez.

  16. I have no idea what kinda shape Peyton is in but he’d have to be under 50% health for Sanchez to be anywhere near him.

If Manning had thrown for the Jets I would find this pretty interesting but since he did not I can only assume he laughed at them and the Jets needed a story.

  17. Reading anything about the Jets makes my stomach turn and I have no reason to dislike them. The coach is a bum as well as the silly ownership for extending Mediocre Mark.

  18. Well when your family makes Billions selling drugs I guess your bound to have a substance abuse problem.

All I can say is from the cheap seats it looks like the Jets wanted Peyton……………Peyton with class said no thank you. The Jets said uhhht ohhh now we pissed off the bad qb we have ………….ok we will just buy him off ………..out comes the check book Woody pays off Sanchez …………..Then woody tells Press ………………..we were just kidding he wanted us and we said Nah we would be better off with Mark!

You can sell it but they won’t buy it

  19. This was NOT said in regards to the fans, but rather to save face with their toddler QB, Sanchez. And I’d bet anything, this is exactly what they have told Sanchez all along. “we never had any interest in Manning. His people called us. Jets were his first preference. We told him we went interested in that we had a QB, who quite coincidently, we were in the middle of extending his contract, when you called. Good luck on the field. Btw, lose this number. Thanks”

  20. Oh yea. ‘I better hangout with my buddies’ was what I said when that hot girl said ‘r u serious?!’ after I requested her for Saturday night date. I feel you buddy.

  21. Still can’t stop laughing. Woody should sell the Jets and join the blue collar comedy tour. Jeff Foxworthy voice ” If you think Sanchez is better than Manning you might be a jack@$$”

  22. What do you say when The greatest QB in the league won’t even take your phone calls? Oh yea we didn’t want him anyway. I sure believe this one!

  23. Woody “passed” on Peyton Manning to keep Mark Sanchez ???

    HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA !!!

    Woody, … put … the … crack … pipe … down !

  24. [“In Johnson’s mind, the Jets actually decided Sanchez was a better option than Manning. Mark Sanchez over Peyton Manning. For real.

    Sure you do…

If you believe that, I think there’s a bridge in Brooklyn that might be for sale…

  25. Sanhez is a BUM!!!! You sound like a scorned lover Woody. You’re just bitter that Peyton didn’t want to play on that circus you call a team.

  26. OMG! The Jets (Jesters is more like it) decided to PASS on Manning because, after all, they have Sanchez! Of course Sanchez is an upgrade. Yeah, right!! Now we all know the state of this franchise when they reward Sanchez by extending his contract. What a joke!

  27. In other news, I won the lottery today, but have decided not to cash in because I just got a sweet job at Taco Bell!!!

  28. LOL yeah! Who needs Peyton Manning when you have Mark Sanchez? There’s almost no difference between the two. Gotta feel bad for Jets fans. Their owner is just as dilusional as their head coach. Both think Sanchez has talent. Both think they have a Super Bowl team. Shame

  29. “In Johnson’s mind, the Jets actually decided Sanchez was a better option than Manning”

And that is all the evidence anyone needs to see that that FO is totally lost!!!! Funny!!!!!

  30. This just in:

Peyton Manning just “passed” 4 or 5 Sanchezes
hours after eating a giant California burrito

  31. In Johnson’s mind, the Jets actually decided Sanchez was a better option than Manning. Mark Sanchez over Peyton Manning. For real.

    ========
    I thought drugs were illegal.

  32. There was a significant amount of feeling amongst Jets fans that it would be a bad idea to sign Manning, particularly after the failed Favre experiment.

It was clear from the way we refused to prostrate ourselves, like Miami have, that we only had interest if we were an overwhelming favourite. Having established Peyyton wanted to talk to other teams, we passed.

Whether he was interested, intrigued or disinterested was irrelevant at that point.

For what it’s worth, it would have been lunacy to build a staff and team for ground & pound then tried to plug Peyton in. It would have been absurd to rip it all up for him – as we learned to our cost in 2008.

  33. Lol, i’ve never seen an article on PFT before with pretty much every comment not getting any thumbs-down. Shows the masses are in total consensus on Woody and Sanchez.

  34. Thank you once again Woody for showing why the just end the season will always be the redhead stepchild in the NY area.

You would have been better off say Payton did not want to play in the same city as his brother

This guy is lucky his folks left him filthy rich or he would be sleeping under a overpass

    ————————————————–

Well since he’s 5-1 against you guys in his career I wouldnt be too excited…dope

  36. The hate makes me happy….

The past 3 seasons the Jets have had a combined record of 28-20…won 4 playoff games and appeared in 2 AFCCG.

How does your team stack up against that in the past 3 years? There are only a handful of teams that have hand more success since Sanchez has been a Jet….

    Iggles fans???

Bills fans? – nothing like blowing your load by Week 7

    Falcons fans? – Matty Ice??

    Dolphin fans? – LOL!!

Chargers fans? – you guys still a favorite to win a SB…again?
