Getty ImagesTom Curran of Comcast SportsNet New England recently speculated that the Patriots might have interest in Rams restricted free agent receiver Danny Amendola. Amendola played for new Pats offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels in St. Louis last season.
Curran’s thinking might have some merit.
Scott Zolak of 98.5 The Sports Hub/Patriots All Access tweeted Thursday morning that Amendola was spotted at a Boston bar called “The Place,” last night.
Amendola isn’t the first former undrafted free agent slot receiver type from Texas Tech in which New England may have had interest. During the 2007 offseason, the Patriots traded second- and seventh-round picks to the Dolphins to acquire Wes Welker’s rights. Like Amendola, Welker was an undrafted free agent slot receiver who played college ball for Mike Leach.
The Patriots are also scheduled to host free agent Anthony Gonzalez, another slot receiver, on Friday night.

Damn you Belichick for trying to produce another Welker.
Great! Another mini-me to catch 5 yard hitch routes and slants!
Nope he was at a bar in Boston not at Patriots headquarters.
NFL, meet NE’s army of 5’9″ slot receivers in 2012.
I jest; if Belichick says this is the plan, I’ll take it.
Steve Gregory…Anthony Gonzalez…Danny Amendola…Wes Welker…Julian Edelman…the Pats are cornering the market on small white role players
I’d say the Welker trade worked out well enough for the Patriots.
He has family in Mass. Most likely completely unrelated.
Amendola played for new Pats offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels in St. Louis last season.
Let’s be more accurate please..he played exactly ONE HALF under Mcdaniels before he dislocated his elbow and was out for the year
Welker + Edelman + Amendola on the field all at the same time? Geeze the Pats will look like they have signed the entire smurf village to smurf catches from Brady.
If he does turn into the next Wes Welker, Andy Reid will have some ‘splainin’ to do.
Ian Rappaport said Amendola was at The Place in Boston not Patriots Place. Amendola also has family in the area and apparently his aunt recently died and his father lives in Scitiate, Ma. That could be the reason for his visit…
Love it. Still need that big play threat though. Having 7 guys that can catch the 5, 10 yard pass is great, until you hit a great defense in the playoffs. Stupidity is doing the same thing every year and expecting a different result.
Yes, @ Boston bar, not @ Patriots facility.
I’ve pretty much given up on trying to figure out Belichick’s personnel strategy, but I’m not sure where we line up Welker, Hernandez and Amendola/Gonzalez this year. There are only two slots!
Hoping for Gonzo, then maybe an outside guy.
With all these articles coming out about Gonzalez and Amendola, it almost seems like the Pats are trying to replace Welker after this season. Hope I am wrong

If they get one more they can attack the Keebler Elves at sunrise and take over the cookie factory.
Only a good signing if he can carry another of Belichicks SONY’s.
Give up the 2nd rd pick and sign Amendola to 1/3 of what Welker is gonna make and cut Welker. Use the money freed up from cutting Welker along with a 1st rd pick and get M. Wallace from Pitt.
Maybe he can stand on Welker’s shoulders to catch those high-and-outside balls thrown by Brady.
The Pats like those short guys.
Coach B is starting to make me feel like I could play for the Patriots. Heck, I’m an average sized white dude that works hard and has a high motor.
Isn’t that just code for non-athletic, stubby, and moderately slow?
Its all smoke and mirrors by BB. This is so that he can bluff the injury reports. Edelmen is hurting? Say its Welker and dress him in Edelmen’s jersey. Woodhead feeling rough? Just put Amendola in Woodhead’s jersey. No one’s going to bat an eye if you say Julian Edelmen isn’t gonna play. You don’t gameplan for Edelmen. You gameplan for Welker, so if you’re thinking Welker won’t play…. JACKPOT!
Gold, Jerry! Gold!
Don’t forget little Danny Woodhead.
I wanna go to “The Place.”
Just for the sake of going to a place called “The Place”.
The only way this makes sense is that Welker is looking for “outragous money” and BB has given up all hope of signing him to an extension… Now I have heard or read nothing of the sort… so another example of the boston sports media making up stories based on very suspect evidence!!!
My money is on WW getting a new deal by camp time… and Amendola is visiting family … not the Pats…
If they want to let WW go over money, so be it. I would HATE it and not likely agree unless WW is demanding Megarton money or heck even Garcon money…but I hope they aren’t playing games with WW (contract pressure) by bringing other slot guys in. WW doesn’t deserve that, he’s a good dude and I think both parties can be upfront about this whole thing and get it worked out.
Kind of surprising because he’s tendered with a 2nd round pick. Figured Bellichick would go after under the radar guys like Danny Coale or Devon Wylie in the mid to late round. If you don’t know about either of those guys, look them up.
You guys DO realize this is just to let Brandon Lloyd know he’s not the only receiver they are talking to. It’s called leverage
Was there a representative of the Patriots at the bar filming him?
Now that the bills signed Mario Williams, we’re gonna need offensive line to protect Brady
