Dolphins turning their focus to Flynn

Green Bay Packers quarterback Flynn hands off the ball against the Detroit Lions during the second half of their NFL football game in Green Bay Reuters

A week ago, the Miami Dolphins didn’t want to flirt with Matt Flynn.  Now, they’re getting ready to propose.

Adam Schefter of ESPN reports that, with Peyton Manning increasingly unlikely to take his talents to his South Beach condo, the Dolphins are expected to pursue Flynn aggressively.

Then again, the Dolphins may not get the chance.  Flynn will visit the Seahawks, beginning Thursday night and continuing into Friday.  If the Seahawks make Flynn an offer he can’t refuse, Flynn won’t be flying to South Florida.

Working in Miami’s favor is the connection between Flynn and Dolphins coach Joe Philbin, based on their four years together in Green Bay.  As we’ve been saying for weeks, any lack of interest in Flynn by Philbin should be regarded as a gigantic red flag.

The interest previously wasn’t expressed because the owner had to once again swing for the fences.  In the end, it could be up to Flynn to salvage the possibility of something resembling joy in Mudville.

About time! At least Flynn is a potential LONG-TERM QB solution. I’m tired of Band-Aids!

Flynn won’t get starter money from my hawks… Hopefully…

Its pretty obvious Manning wont sign with the Dolphins, Philbin should’ve focused on getting Matt Flynn this entire time….

It will be pretty funny if Flynn doesn’t go to Miami, but makes a good career out of Seattle.

Both Flynn and Peyton would have been big risks (unproven talent vs. unproven health). If I’m going to roll the dice, I mineswell roll the dice on Flynn: cheaper and far younger. If he pans out, he could lead your franchise for a decade.

And this is coming from a Manning fan.

Then again, I’m primarily a Skins fan, so I have no idea what a good QB looks like (still missing Brad Johnson…)

Worth noting that even though everyone keeps mentioning his relationship with Philbin, nobody seems to mention that the guy who actually drafted him is in Seattle.

  12. buccityboy says: Mar 15, 2012 6:37 PM

The Dolphins signing a former back-up based on a very small sample size is a movie we’ve all seen before. Thirty years after drafting Dan Marino in the first round they still refuse to make the same commitment to another quarterback prospect always opting for the quick fix instead.

  15. 1sgtankerman says: Mar 15, 2012 6:40 PM

Good! Finally! One good hit from Mario on Peyton and you have a tragedy AND you’re worse off than you were before, talent wise. He’s a short term solution at best. Follow the Patriot and Steeler model and build for the long run!

  22. dolfanatik says: Mar 15, 2012 6:41 PM

That’s what true dolphin fans what. A Qb who knows the system and can help speed up process of others learning it. Trade down draft Floyd and pick up another 2nd rounder

  23. sean6886 says: Mar 15, 2012 6:41 PM

Smart on their part. The sooner they realize Peyton’s not going to sign with them the better. So it’s Garrard if they can’t get Flynn?

  24. paleandpasty says: Mar 15, 2012 6:42 PM

Cant knock the fins plan oon this one

  25. machester52 says: Mar 15, 2012 6:42 PM

Flynn will make a mistake if he doesn’t go to Miami. He’s already comfortable with the system. He would succeed immediately in Miami.

  26. 7pints says: Mar 15, 2012 6:43 PM

Sorry. This cant be accurate because all the Dolphin fans said that Manning to Miami was a done deal.

  27. emmac13 says: Mar 15, 2012 6:43 PM

I hope he signs with Seattle just to see Miami get it stuck in the keyster. Miami should have went after Flynn from the beginning. If Peyton signs in Denver, Cleveland gets it in the rear. How you might ask? Well if he goes to Arizona or Tenn. then Cleveland get Kolb or Hass.

  28. chunkman3000 says: Mar 15, 2012 6:43 PM

  29. ebr362 says: Mar 15, 2012 6:44 PM

Its about time. My guess is if they would have shown interest prior, other teams would have read into it and also pursued. Now most have hired their targets.
Hopefully Flynn has the goods and Philbin gets to run the team the way he wants and not have to switch everything to suit mannings at best 3yrs for us to start over. As sweet as manning might have been, it was the usual bandaid, just a real good bandaid this time.

I’m kinda cautious about Flynn considering not too many free agent qb’s have turned into franchise guys. But, maybe he will be the diamond in the rough that the league hasn’t had since drew brees

  34. yycfin says: Mar 15, 2012 6:47 PM

Let’s see what happens. Did he talk to Mrs Manning yet to get her input? They have two young kids and you know who’s running that house right now and it ain’t his royal highness.
I’d laugh if he went back to Indy and Irsay traded #1 for a King’s ransom!

  36. hmpennypacker says: Mar 15, 2012 6:49 PM

If the dolphins are only now going after Flynn it shouldn’t signal that Philbin thinks he’s not a starter. If Ross wanted Manning from the get-go Philbin’s opinion on Flynn wouldn’t matter. Ross’s mindset was probably; we’ll go hell for leather after Manning and if the bid falter’s THEN we’ll go after Flynn.

  48. wannstache says: Mar 15, 2012 7:00 PM

Dear Dolphins: Do you idiots remember A.J. Feely? He too looked good as a back-up on a far more talented team, his major flaws hidden by having superior talent to throw to. If he was a legit starter, the Pack would have franchised him. The fact that he’s still out there tells you he’s no starter. Nothing will change until you DRAFT a first-round QB!

  53. getsome99 says: Mar 15, 2012 7:06 PM

Miami will be able to outbid Seattle for Flynn and still not have to overspend. Seattle already has a lot money tied up in Tavaris Jackson and won’t be offering Flynn big money to come in and compete. Miami should be able to get Flynn on an incentive heavy deal. If he turns out to be a stud, he gets paid and it’s money well spent. If he’s a bust, you can cut your losses with minimal loss.

  54. brutus9448 says: Mar 15, 2012 7:07 PM

    *******************************************

Hopefully, he’ll be throwing to someone who doesn’t drop TD’s. The Parcells era Dolphins were built to play mistake free and consistent. The lack of big play ability has been what has kept them from getting over the hump. (and yes, 7-9 from a rebuilding team coming off a 1-15 record is a hump). The probelm with Marhsall is he doesn’t really stretch the field and make big plays, so his drops hurt Miami even more. Look for the Fins to draft a WR early. The speedster from Ga Tech could be available in the 2nd round. I expect Roberto Wallace and Marlon Moore to step up this year as well. They could be the new starting combo with Bess in the slot.

  67. nineroutsider says: Mar 15, 2012 7:17 PM

The difference here is Philbin has worked with Flynn since he’s been in the league and should have a pretty good read on if Flynn is the real deal. 1 year for $4 million is a lot of money? That’s what is tied up in Tavaris Jackson and that’s backup money. Seattle was around $30 million under the cap when free agency started so obviously you have no idea what you’re talking about.

  73. dolfanatik says: Mar 15, 2012 7:28 PM

manning was a front office , ownership interest.. notoriety (master card, gatorade, endorsements) flynn is a better LONG-TERM and x & o’ s move. watch and see. WR, RT, pass catching TE.

  74. thefiesty1 says: Mar 15, 2012 7:31 PM

If they really want Manning they need to go after him and PAY him. They’d get him then. Flynn is just another Kolb. Not enough starts to know if he’s the answer to anybody.

  75. trollhammer20 says: Mar 15, 2012 7:34 PM

Seattle will make a fair market offer, probably a 3-4 year deal at around $6-8 million a year. That’s more than they paid Whitehurst and Jackson, but not as much as most starting QBs sign for these days. It’s also a lot less than the Schaub or Kolb contracts.

Flynn would then have a few years to make an impression. A contract like the one described above would make him a free agent right around the age of 30….if he plays well, he can cash in big-time.

Which is as it should be. Why throw an enormous contract the way of a guy who is still an unproven quantity? Give him a decent contract, and let him EARN the big bucks.

It’s a deep QB draft this year, and if Flynn takes his talents to South Beach for a few extra million, there’s Tannehill, Cousins, Osweiler, Weeden, Foles, etc., to choose from. Hell, Kolb may be on the market in 24 hours….bet they could get him for half what the Cards paid 8 months ago.

I think Seattle can and will be outbid, in the event Miami gives up on Manning and makes him an offer. Seattle didn’t overpay for Kolb last year, and they won’t overpay for Flynn this year.

  77. getsome99 says: Mar 15, 2012 7:38 PM

I think the Jets will finish last. Buffalo is a team on the rise and Chan Gailey is a very underrated head coach. Rex Ryan’s Jets are constructed of a bunch of band aids and sissy QB. They have already started to implode and this should be the year they completely fall apart as those band aids are getting older and Sanchez has not improved at all since day 1.

replay of the Scott Mitchell syndrome – play two good games and all of a sudden you are great. Flynn looked horrible on a bunch of other times I saw him play. He was nothing special at LSU either despite great talent all around him. If Manning goes to Tennessee phins should go hard after Jake Locker who looked really good when he played this year (and probably would have been one of the top two picks in the draft if he came out of UW as a junior as most expected.

As we’ve been saying for weeks, any lack of interest in Flynn by Philbin should be regarded as a gigantic red flag.
    ===================================
Mike, most likely any lack of interest on Philbins part was due to owner Stephen Ross being focused on Peyton Manning to put fans in the stadium. That said Matt Flynn may not be an upgrade to Matt Moore. Moore was the # 12 rated passer with an offensive line that was very weak on the right side and only rated 30th in the NFL. If the Dolphins do not get Matt Flynn then they will just get a backup for Matt Moore who has a much better body of work than Flynn.

As a 16 year Dolphin Season Ticket Holder, let me tell you, Flynn to Devone Bess does not really make me want to open my checkbook this year. It has turned into the same old year after year. I love the Dolphins but am tired with the constant rebuild. Sporano was fired supposedly because Ireland told Ross we had the personnel to be a Playoff team. Anyone that has watched football as long as me knows this team is not in the same league as the Patriots. Very sad to see.

  90. phillyphinsfan says: Mar 15, 2012 8:39 PM

Flynn knows that Manning was Ross’ pick. Unless the Seahawks overwhelm him, he’s coming to Miami. This team is still in a rebuilding process. Last year’s draft was finally a good one and Matt Moore turned out to be a better option than Kyle Orton. Moore played very well and so did Reggie Bush. (I know some of you haters laughed and posted your humor when they signed him last year). We shall see if this franchise ever turn the corner.

“Is Matt Flynn the next Kevin Kolb and Scott Mitchell? Beware of former back up QB’s who look good in spot duty.”

Ross pushed hard for Jeff Fischer and instead got Joe Philbin, WORKED OUT FOR THE BEST!

Ross is pushing for Manning, more than likely the Dolphins end up with Flynn, and that will WORK OUT FOR THE BEST.

I’m actually pretty happy that Ross has not been getting his first choices because what he is “settling for” are going to turn out the best for Miami.

Lets face it, as a fin fan the Pats have owned the afc east, Manning was afraid of going against Brady and Belicheck twice a year.
You telling me the Titans have a better setup? We have Marshall (now gone after the fact) Bess,Bush and Long. Our D is far better and you actually live down the road.
You had the chance to knock Brady and Belicheck off their afc east perch, but you ran scared to an easier division to pad your stats. MANNING=LEBRON
