Mark Sanchez: I underachieved, could have handled things better

Jets quarterback Mark Sanchez says he and receiver Santonio Holmes are on good terms, despite stories at the end of last season that the two were in a highly dysfunctional relationship.

But Sanchez also acknowledged that he didn’t do a good enough job in communicating with Holmes during the season, and he said he has already taken steps to change that during the offseason.

I underachieved,” Sanchez told Manish Mehta of the New York Daily News. “I know there’s some things that I could have handled better with him and our communication.”

But now that they’ve talked, Sanchez says there are no doubts about his ability to work well with his No. 1 wide receiver.

“I know it can work between us,” Sanchez said. “It’s not a question of ‘if.’ It’s a matter of ‘when.’ And that’s now.”

With both Sanchez and Holmes contractually married to the Jets, it had better work now.

This is like that scene in “The Godfather” where Brando slaps that whimpering singer guy … and tells him, “You can act like a man.”

Sanchez needs to throw headcase under the bus. We know it’s what he’s thinking.

Kind of sounds line Romo after the Cowboys miss the playoffs every year.

What he calls ‘underachieved’, most people just call ‘sucked’.

Convenient to say AFTER the contract extension eh Mark?

  13. phillyphil005 says: Mar 15, 2012 7:38 PM

I can’t imagine him handling things any better…especially with Super Mario and Kyle Williams in the fold when he plays Buffalo.

This guy folds up quicker than origami when the pressure is on.

Sanchez is a bum. Trojan QBs don’t last in the pros.

    Recent USC failures:

Mark Sanchez-over rated from the start, as long as he’s with the Jets, you can crown the Pats every year.
Matt Cassel- Will be benched or cut as soon as the Chiefs can lure in a real QB.
Carson Palmer-The best of the worst, up and down performer.
Matt Leinart- O wait, is he still playing?
Rodney Peete- QB’d the mid 90’s embarrassment of an Eagles squad.

  18. crackills says: Mar 15, 2012 7:43 PM

Admitting that you suck is the first step to recovery.. or in Sanchez case… eventual one way ticket home.

  19. AlanSaysYo says: Mar 15, 2012 7:44 PM

Let’s talk more about Mark Sanchez’s feelings. Really.

The Jets should (continue to) be embarrassed.

  20. caseyanthonymunoz says: Mar 15, 2012 7:44 PM

He didn’t underachieve, the team around him this year just wasn’t as good. He’s a lousy QB and was a lousy QB the previous couple seasons. The difference is they were better defensively and had a better run game those previous two years. Sanchez is awful and always will be.

  21. LoCoSu@%s says: Mar 15, 2012 7:48 PM

    I see.

  22. xtb3 says: Mar 15, 2012 7:49 PM

Sanchise didn’t “underachieve”. He just kept throwing the ball to the other teams.

  23. huskersrock1 says: Mar 15, 2012 7:51 PM

Did he underachieve or is he just not that good?

Jets are in decline. Defense is in decline. Can’t blame Shotty this year.

  29. fanofnyjets says: Mar 15, 2012 8:10 PM

Drew brees was thought to be a bust after 3 years with SD. Sanchez has arm strength and athletic ability, just need to fix happy feet and confidence.

  30. Gridiron Grit says: Mar 15, 2012 8:14 PM

At least he’s not living in denial. He’s still a mediocre quarterback, though.

  31. nflfan555 says: Mar 15, 2012 8:14 PM

Ok, I am officially embarrassed, any room on Giants bandwagon? Our QB has a mangina

  32. knucklehead93 says: Mar 15, 2012 8:23 PM

  38. dragonbishara says: Mar 15, 2012 8:43 PM

I wouldn’t let this guy quarterback my flag team

  39. jc327 says: Mar 15, 2012 8:44 PM

The sad part is, he didn’t actually underachieve at all.

  40. footballfan80 says: Mar 15, 2012 8:48 PM

    phillyphil005 :

Yea,the Jets are absolutely terrified over one of the most inept teams since the turn of the century. The Bills havent been in the playoffs in the last 13 seasons, let alone win a playoff game. Same goes for the Dolphins, oh wait they were in a few years ago but havent won a playoff game in 12 freakin years.

Anyone who knows football realizes there are only 2 teams in the AFC east.

  41. footballfan80 says: Mar 15, 2012 8:52 PM

Folds under pressure? I am assuming you are referring to Fitzpatrick, who has yet to play well in one meaningful game in his whole career.

If folding under pressure means posting a 9TD-3INT ratio, a 60% completion rate, and a 94.3 QB rating ranking 7th all time in NFL playoff history, sign me up please!

Drew brees was thought to be a bust after 3 years with SD.
On my planet they thought no such thing, his problem was a blown out arm and teams were worried about him recovering, but hey if thinking brees used to be snachez and look how he turned out helps jets fans escape reality have at it, the only time any of you grasp reality is around December every year and that doesnt last long until free agency then you claim your yearly offseason championship and proclaim you’re the team to beat.. thats not a rex thing either.. been going on for almost 2 decades now.

BTW.. snachez best year < flaccos worst year.. go look at the stats, and you know everyones opinion of him.

  43. randygnyc says: Mar 15, 2012 9:16 PM

Funny, I think you over- performed last year. You have reached your potential, Mark.

  44. nflfan555 says: Mar 15, 2012 9:28 PM

Linsanity over now it is time for Sanchizesanity…

Unfortunately when we finally realize Sanch kinda stinks it will be like two more years then we have to start over again… Come on I can’t wait 6 to 7 years till we are good again 😦

  45. nyjalleffingday says: Mar 15, 2012 9:30 PM

    QB #1
    782 completions, 1414 attempts, 9,209 yards, 67 TD, 51 INT, 76 QBR

    QB #2
    892 completions, 1608 attempts, 10,342 yards, 71 TD, 57 INT, 75 QBR

Think about it, folks. Being a professional quarterback is not easy, otherwise the job would not pay millions a year. They sometimes just need some time.

  46. tonyromoisterrible says: Mar 15, 2012 9:32 PM

Worst starting QB in the AFC.

  47. getagripdummie says: Mar 15, 2012 9:39 PM

Sanchez’s numbers are worse than Chad Henne and he was run out of town in Miami. Jets fans have suffered the worst possible scenario…. A first round QB that is sold as the next Johnny U and is actually very average. You’re stuck with him, did Joe make a deal ?

  48. tommytd says: Mar 15, 2012 9:45 PM

Yea, and while we’re at it…your HC left a little bit to be desired too!

  49. pftcensorssuck says: Mar 15, 2012 9:59 PM

    “I under achieved”

That’s what you always want to hear from your “leader”, right?

  50. kerc1986 says: Mar 15, 2012 11:50 PM

Any qb with that defense n running game could have made it to the afc championship, so I don’t put any stock on his playoffs win, and comparing him to brees after 3seasons, u have to be kidding me, brees was way better than sanchez has been.
