Adam Caplan reported earlier today that the St. Louis Rams were hosting receiver Steve Smith, most recently of the Eagles, for a free agent visit.

Per ESPN’s Adam Schefter, the Rams are now giving Smith a physical.

Giving a free agent a physical is usually a strong indication that the player will be signed. Smith’s case could be different because he has a history of debilitating knee problems.

St. Louis certainly needs receiver help. Smith would be a candidate to crack the rotation, but the Rams shouldn’t expect the same player who caught 107 balls for the Giants and made the Pro Bowl in 2009.

Smith has been a shell of that player since.
