Saints showing interest in free agent linebacker Curtis Lofton

Multiple reports emerged Thursday afternoon that the New Orleans Saints are showing interest in free agent linebacker Curtis Lofton. The first came from NFL Network’s Jason La Canfora, and the second from Mike Triplett of the New Orleans Times-Picayune.

Big contracts recently paid out to D’Qwell Jackson (five years, $42.5 million), Lawrence Timmons (six years, $50 million), and David Harris (four years, $36 million) have stalled the 2012 inside linebacker market. For instance, MLive.com’s Anwar Richardson has reported that free agent inside linebacker Stephen Tulloch is asking for more money than Jackson received from Cleveland.

In general, NFL teams balk at paying that much for linebackers who don’t rush the passer.

The Saints are one of the few teams actively making overtures to players at the position, however, and they will host former Seahawks middle linebacker David Hawthorne for a Friday visit.

They’re now giving Lofton a hard look.

Eagles should show interest in him.

Curtis is great vs. the run, a bit of a liability against the pass. Rock solid player.

I suppose it would be hard to turn down a location where you get plentiful under-the-table cash bonuses like New Orleans.

Once one of these guys signs its going to be a chain reaction. Right now, it’s clear they are asking for money than what the franchises think they are worth.

I really like Tulloch but he isn’t worth that kind of money…and Jackson certainly isn’t either. Just because Cleveland is out of their mind doesn’t require the rest of the NFL to be.

Tulloch is insane if he thinks he is going to get that kind of money. I saw every Lions game, he is garbage. Jackson and Lofton are much better than he is.

Sign him, but dont break the bank. Vilma counts as $5.4M this year, SO, any linebacker signed but settle for a couple million under this mark. We are trying to sign Drew long term

I must have missed an update at some point…didn’t Lofton sign with the Bucs? Coulda swore I read that somewhere.

Sign him for $100K and pay him the rest under the table via bounty money. There is already a system in place. You get your player with zero cap impact.

All this new guys are going to pointless if the Saints don’t do a deal with Brees. And at this point the vibes and the relationship have gone so sour even if they do a deal it may be pointless. Welcome back, Aints!

    Don’t do it!

Looks like wishful thinking to me. Keeping bringing the hate! I like it. It means the Saints are good.
