49ers jump into the Peyton Manning sweepstakes

NFL: San Francisco 49ers at Arizona Cardinals Getty Images

ESPN’s Adam Schefter reports that the San Francisco 49ers have emerged as one of the three finalists to sign free agent quarterback Peyton Manning.

The other two teams are the Denver Broncos and Tennessee Titans. According to Schefter, the Arizona Cardinals “have been advised that they are to proceed as if they will not get Peyton Manning.”

We already knew the Dolphins were out.

Schefter, who broke the 49ers news on SportsCenter early Friday afternoon, reported that San Francisco secretly sent club officials to watch Manning throw at Duke University on Tuesday night. The 49ers’ representatives were said to be “very impressed with what they saw.”

The Niners have already given Manning a physical.

And this explains why they haven’t re-signed free agent quarterback Alex Smith yet.

    WOW……..

This signing might put them over the top?!

  8. kylehealy says: Mar 16, 2012 2:22 PM

Returning all 11 starters on defense, then add Manning and Moss to the offense, plus maybe a few pieces in the draft. The 49ers are going to be scary next year and maybe for a long time since Kaepernick would be able to sit and learn from behind one of the game’s greatest. Would be sad to see Alex Smith go, I’d like to see him build off last year, but I mean, it’s Peyton Manning.

  9. pete5520 says: Mar 16, 2012 2:22 PM

i see alex smith confidence going down the drain once again !

  10. nflsucker says: Mar 16, 2012 2:22 PM

Wow. The fates of a few teams really are in play here.

  11. seahawks4alltime says: Mar 16, 2012 2:22 PM

With Peyton Manning hurling it to Randy Moss, I think my Seahawks better spend a good part of the draft looking into shoring up their secondary.

  12. medtxpack says: Mar 16, 2012 2:22 PM

i love it when teams fly under the radar in free agency.

  13. revanslightsaber says: Mar 16, 2012 2:22 PM

If Manning chooses Denver over the Niners it would be beyond dumb. Does he like the AFC that much

  14. thereisfootballwestofjersey says: Mar 16, 2012 2:23 PM

If Manning comes to SF. They instantly become 11-4 favorites to win the Super Bowl on Bovada. As a Niner fan who lives 2 miles from the stick, I kinda have wood

  15. chap6869 says: Mar 16, 2012 2:23 PM

Not a Niners fan but if they sign him and he’s even close to his old self, they will be representing the NFC this year!

  16. georgebrett says: Mar 16, 2012 2:23 PM

Much better fit than to Denver but I’d rather see him in Denver because I’d love to see how many more games he’d win that Tim Tebow with the receivers they have.

Manning to Moss. The 2004 NFL super team

  20. laeaglefan says: Mar 16, 2012 2:24 PM

So I guess the Cardinals have been told that its “safe” to go ahead and pay Kevin Kolb his $7 million roster bonus. How encouraging THAT must be for the Cards!

  21. Nevis says: Mar 16, 2012 2:24 PM

Hard to say where the 49ers lie here in terms of front-running.

NO QUESTION the 49ers are closer to a ring than Denver or Tennessee.

NO QUESTION both the Titans and Broncos can offer more money.

Really depends now on how much Manning likes SF and vice versa. The 49ers will not mortgage their entire future for the guy, but I’m not sure Manning is interested in that either.

  22. jlee2081 says: Mar 16, 2012 2:24 PM

  24. skoobyfl says: Mar 16, 2012 2:25 PM

  25. burgundyandgold says: Mar 16, 2012 2:25 PM

  26. skinsdag says: Mar 16, 2012 2:25 PM

  28. jakek2 says: Mar 16, 2012 2:25 PM

The only question left is whether Harbaugh will continue that little campy pre-game, shoulder pad hitting, hype routine with PM that he did with Smith.

  33. emmac13 says: Mar 16, 2012 2:29 PM

  34. starfan79 says: Mar 16, 2012 2:30 PM

Oooo that would be fun…. With that defense… Vernon Davis and randy moss.. If Crabtree decides to play.. Could be solid

  35. thatobnoxiousguy says: Mar 16, 2012 2:31 PM

Manning knew he was going to the 49ers all along.

He does not want to go play there as a visitor.
He heard how the 49er fanbase(gangs) attack anyone and everyone (women and children included)wearing another teams jersey.

  36. brianjoates says: Mar 16, 2012 2:31 PM

And there it is, Miami Dolphins can now call Alex Smith their new QB.

  37. phinfan527 says: Mar 16, 2012 2:32 PM

  38. sportsguybayarea says: Mar 16, 2012 2:32 PM

with the niners already having a championship caliber defense, this would take them over the top and become the favorite to win the super bowl. in my opinion they would become the best team in the NFL

  39. babyjesus69 says: Mar 16, 2012 2:33 PM

Gosh dangit!!! I’m torn as a 49ers fan. I love Alex and his character. Everything he went through, every reason he had to leave before last season. Peyton coming in (if healthy) puts niners as contenders for super bowl next 3 years as well as mentoring kapernick. Damn! Is it too early for a glass of scotch?

  40. kurtzimmer says: Mar 16, 2012 2:34 PM

When Harbaugh made the foolish move of signing Randy Moss, that told me the Niners were not serious about signing Manning. One of the big reasons Manning didn’t want to go to Miami was because of the headcase Brandon Marshall, so why would he want to play with Randy Moss? Let’s get real people, he will end up in Denver or Tennessee.

  41. aquafan13 says: Mar 16, 2012 2:34 PM

  44. ncwhodat says: Mar 16, 2012 2:48 PM

    Jim Harbaugh is big douche!
“Alex Smith is our guy” rings hollow now, … like his soul. Way to motivate “your guy!”
Guess there won’t be any pre-game chest bumping, and shoulder pad lovefest going on.
    A 2nd rate move by a 2nd rate ex-QB.

  45. gdeli says: Mar 16, 2012 2:48 PM

what a backhand to alex smith. He did great last year. what else does he have to do? the d screwed up at the end at that was the end of the season. IDNot trust peyton will be kick ass this year. I saw int’s that didn’t make sense before he had the surgery and they are magically gonna disappear? with the colts since 1998 and only 1 superbowl? yes, brady and ben are good but he should have 2.

  46. bbeaman78 says: Mar 16, 2012 2:48 PM

Easy 49ers fans. Peyton will still have to talk to his daddy to make sure it is okay that he plays Eli in the NFC Championship with 49ers, or in the Super Bowl with (ENTER AFC TEAM HERE).

This is the best team he could join, but I still don’t think it will happen. I think he will be a Bronco or a Titan.

Yes Harbaugh is awesome. Who wouldn’t want to play for that guy. And I am a lifetime Cowboys fans who should hate the Niners. At 1 team from the ’90′s domination is almost back on top. Jerry Jones should take notes. Defense wins championships!

Good luck Niners Fans! Mean while I will try not to jump off a building while listening to the vomit of “Tony Romo is our guy”

    • Improved Red Zone managment

    Superbowl, no way in….
    • Packers
    • Saints (w/ a new chip on their shoulder)

    • No backup QB should there be some tragic hit

  49. scottieplongballs says: Mar 16, 2012 2:49 PM

Time to send Smith packing. If the 49er’s were that sold on him they would have already locked him up. They know he’s not the answer and Peyton is. Scary scary team with Peyton

  50. denverdave3 says: Mar 16, 2012 2:52 PM

Why would anybody want to live in San Fran. these days? The politics suck, the taxes are higher than high, the roads are jammed and it is near Oakland. YECH to all of that. You people have really screwed up a fine city.

  51. sean6886 says: Mar 16, 2012 2:54 PM

Well, I didn’t even think they were interested, but now that we know their intentions, I would have to say I can see Peyton signing here over Tennessee or Denver. I’ve thought all along that he’d sign with Denver but San Fran has way more opportunity and they’re poised to win now, especially with some of the free agent WR pickups.
Not sure of their cap situation but they must be okay to get this far.

    This is getting interesting again.

  52. junior559 says: Mar 16, 2012 2:55 PM

the niners better not let a GREAT QB like manning get away they need someone who can win games on offense and who can at least go over 300 yards passing in one game of the season(smith never could)

  53. cowboyhater says: Mar 16, 2012 2:55 PM

I’ve been saying this since the sweepstakes even began. Perfect fit. He would be, and the 9ers organization would be foolish not be interested in one another.

Could it be a ploy to low ball Alex Smith
who wants a longer contract than the 49ers are offering

  60. tom3565 says: Mar 16, 2012 3:12 PM

Schefter did not break this story, Motensen did! Stromboli (Condon) and Pinnochio (Mortensen) have been releasing info the minute any team gets close to a deal. Better yet Alex Smith is also represented by CAA. this whole thing stinks like a five day old fish on the beach

LMFAO @ all the noob 49er fans. Did any of you see Moss play on 2010? His play even had JJ Stokes cringing. Manning will probably never be the same. If 3500 yds & 22 tds get you excited than you are what we thought you were.

  66. superdawg1967 says: Mar 16, 2012 3:20 PM

  67. betsm says: Mar 16, 2012 3:21 PM

You all forget that Harbaugh likes full control of the offense. He wants to call the plays. Peyton likes to call his own plays on offense, so I’m not so sure that would be a great fit.

He also doesn’t want to go to the NFC because his brother is in that league. Now…he could possibly go feeling he could get a SB ring faster through SF. But then again, I think there are more negatives than positives there.

  68. izrath says: Mar 16, 2012 3:23 PM

i see alex smith confidence going down the drain once again !

    ——————

On the contrary, with Harbaugh behind him Alex Smith plays much better with a chip on his shoulder.

This could be a ploy by Harbaugh just to instill another chip on his shoulder so Alex doesn’t become complacent.

  69. n2thaizzo says: Mar 16, 2012 3:26 PM

what a hater! hahah.. newsflash jackass, if the niners were 1 play away from the SB with ALEX SMITH .. what makes u think they wont with Manning?

    ——————————————————

You gotta love fans, I tell ya. When will people learn that what happened last year HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH WHAT WILL HAPPEN THIS YEAR!!! If it did, don’t you think we’d see a lot more repeat champions? Look at the Packers. 2 years ago, SB champs, last year? Out in 1 game. Now, I will admit, Manning to the 9ers seems like a lock to do damage, but you just don’t know from year to year.

  70. frostymugobeer says: Mar 16, 2012 3:34 PM

It would be great for the Broncos if SF signed manning, they could pick up Smith (with an axe to grind) for less money and possibly get a guy just coming into his prime .as opposed to one who has 3-4 years left if he keeps his head down.
he would likely command less money and leave the broncos more $$$ for some solid recievers.
Harbaugh should think twice about this move,
Manning could play 3 downs and retire

  71. georgebrett says: Mar 16, 2012 3:36 PM

    Who has arm strength problems?

  72. jhastrello says: Mar 16, 2012 3:38 PM

Regardless of the current Coach and the success that the 49′er’s had last year, here are a few things to consider.

As mentioned, the ‘wind’ in the Stick.

The lawn at the Stick (can anyone say ‘knees’).

Next years schedule means that Manning would be playing outside in 12 of 16 games. He loves playing indoors.

Really long plane flights and jet lag.

He really wants to stay in the AFC to minimize potential games with the Giants and Eli.

But my hat’s off to them for the stealth and trying to upgrade. Big problem is that if Manning signs elsewhere (still likely) – what has this now done to the Smith situation. Bound to be NOT GOOD!

  73. dcbraun1 says: Mar 16, 2012 3:40 PM

Has anyone seen Schefter breaking this news on ESPN? He seems so shaken and embarrassed that this news got past him. I’ve never seen anything like it.

  74. greenbayrob says: Mar 16, 2012 3:43 PM

hold your horses on superbowl #6… peyton to the niners would definitely be an upgrade but aren’t you forgetting someone? named Aaron Rodgers? who plays for the PACK?

no way the packers lose an opening round playoff game 2 years in a row.. i know the great Tom B has lost consecutive opening rounds in the playoffs… but can you really see this green bay team doing that? the last time Aaron and the packers lost a playoff game they won the superbowl the following year. I don’t even want to know how determined Aaron will be this year. Look out NFC, Peyton do yourself a favor and stay in the AFC where after Tom the next best QBs are a declining Rivers and a broken Big Ben… oh yea and Andy Dalton…. im shakin in my space boots.

  75. jm91rs says: Mar 16, 2012 3:44 PM

Absolutely huge Harbaugh and SF hater here…If they get manning, and he’s anything like he was before the injury, the rest of the league is in trouble.

You thought Vernon Davis had nice numbers before? Ask Dallas Clark what it’s like playing with Peyton Manning. Michael Crabtree might finally look like half the player he was drafted to be. I’d be torn with my love of Manning and my absolute despise for SF.

As a Bengals fan (that should explain the hatred for SF), I’d rather see him in the NFC than in Denver, but that SF team would have the POTENTIAL to be very scary.

  76. kmack831 says: Mar 16, 2012 3:50 PM

Peyton Fin Manning!!! Some of us Love Alex, and proud of his great last year. But you can not pass on Peyton if he is healthy and you can sign him.

Really want to see how Alex grows with some Good WRs (Crabs drops a lot, Ginn drops, Morgan hurt… all those INJs Cost us the CHAMP Game not Alex… )

So will be kind of bitter sweet, since Alex did give a great year, Great win over the Saints.

Alex even cut his final Two years of 24 million down to 12. Just shows he cares about the Team and the Game and not about $$$. Plus who knows where he would have gone, and made…

If Peyton stays healthy Put SF Down for 3 peet SB WINS!!! 6, 7 and 8 oh yeah that would be Great!!!

  77. nowillrepeat says: Mar 16, 2012 3:52 PM

Saints and Pack will still be a force. Champs arent bad either.

Peyton looks good in workouts but what happens when you involve giant men looking to rip his head off (assuming goddell doesnt throw flags on them after this whole bounty thing).

Let see how Peyton reacts to a hit before we start throwing any definatives out there.

  78. paulfountaine says: Mar 16, 2012 3:53 PM

It really seems the perfect fit. Of the 3 finalists, which team is ready to win a Super Bowl now?

I don’t think it’s any more complicated than that. Welcome to SF Peyton. We will help you extend the family legacy while you help us extend the 49er legacy.

  79. metalhead65 says: Mar 16, 2012 3:53 PM

  82. goldrush36 says: Mar 16, 2012 4:00 PM

  83. badkarma56 says: Mar 16, 2012 4:01 PM

The detail i think everyone is glossing over is that peyton threw for the 49ers on TUESDAY NIGHT, just as everyone else was focusing on the start of free agency, before he worked out for anyone else……

Now one argument could be they did that to keep it secret, so that Peyton could then work out for other teams find out his value then come back to the niners with a price tag.

Another argument could be that they had planned to sign him in secret and shock the world, but the niners didnt like what they saw, as a curtsey to peyton they kept it quiet.

Either way the niners didnt just “jump in the peyton sweepstakes”…..the niners STARTED the peyton sweepstakes

  84. 14liloso says: Mar 16, 2012 4:01 PM

  85. 49erdomination says: Mar 16, 2012 4:03 PM

People need to keep something in mind here. Alex spent a lot of time on his back last season because of, I don’t even know how many sacks.

Peyton has a jacked up neck and if the O line doesn’t get fixed, he’ll be riding pine by the second game. What good will he be then? I like Peyton. If he were good enough to play though, he’d still be in Indy.

I say, don’t waste the money and give Alex what he deserves.

  86. kpow55 says: Mar 16, 2012 4:07 PM

Last time I checked one win away, still isn’t “in”

Apparently D wins championships if your the Giants, not the 49ers.

Manning WAS great but this isn’t 2004 anymore. The jury is out on wether he’ll be Montana in KC good or Favre in NY bad, neither of which won a SB on new team.

Crabs is a stone hand bust, Moss is a has been and Davis is a great TE with decent but not great speed.

I’m sure they’ll have a good year and be fun to watch till mid January.

Call it hating but it’s reality for the fludpuckers like yourself climbing over each other for a spot on the bandwagon.

  87. jeziyo247 says: Mar 16, 2012 4:26 PM

Niner fans, read this, Peyton doesn’t want to go to the NFC and potentially knock his brother out from superbowl contention, he rather play him in the superbowl. Who wouldn’t watch an all manning bowl? That’s why he declined the cardinals, even the though of throwing to Larry fitzgerald didn’t matter in his consideration, why would he go to the niners. Randy moss is past his prime that’s why new england gave him up and he had brady, manning is no difference. We all know reality broncos and titans are the true contenders to land manning

If the Niners get Manning I dont see any reason they won’t be in the super bowl…
    ————————–

    Play off yes:
    • WEAK division
    • Improved Red Zone managment

    Superbowl, no way in….
    • Packers
    • Saints (w/ a new chip on their shoulder)
    • Lack of WR depth (46 year old Moss does not count)
    • No backup QB should there be some tragic hit
    ____________

I don’t remember the Packers being much of a hurdle last season…

Couldn’t agree with you more, manning is not niner material and he made it clear he wants to stay in the AFC, ask the cardinals

  91. granadafan says: Mar 16, 2012 4:55 PM

I like this move. Peyton can mentor the QB of the future, Colin Kaepernick, while he wins a Superbowl or two (provided his neck holds up and ditches his noodle arm).

    _____________________________________________________

LOLOL the worst post of the day! First of all – Vernon Davis ran a 4.38 forty at the combine bro. He’s technically THE FASTEST TE in the league!

Also since 2004 – I believe Peyton won another 1-2 MVP’s. As of 2010, he had 33 td’s and 17 int’s on a team we saw that wasn’t very talented as it turned out. That run game was way off -and he still had top 5 stats.

As for Favre in New York before he got injured he looked damn good as well. Peyton in Tenn or SF will be just fine. Denver as well.

what if we ask the dolphins too?

By that rationale peyton will sign with the allen ranglers!

You all forget that Harbaugh likes full control of the offense. He wants to call the plays. Peyton likes to call his own plays on offense, so I’m not so sure that would be a great fit

    ———————–

Uh, Harbaugh doesn’t call the plays. Greg Roman calls most of the plays, but Geep Chryst, Brad Seely, and Harbaugh all contribute. To the contrary of your uniformed comment, I can’t wait to see what Manning, Harbaugh, Roman, and Seely come up with… some mad scientist 5 H 1 T!

And if your alex smith you then goto arizona to have the chance to stick it to your old team 2 times a year.

As a Niner fan, I’m excited to wonder how PM would do in SF.

But…the cost may be too much.

Think as to why the Colts sucked without him,
was it because the front office (GM) didnt stock good talent or because of PM’s contract they could not pay for good talent depth?

Alex or Peyton, either way this season will be interesting for the Niners.

  100. friscokid49 says: Mar 16, 2012 6:02 PM

How funny it would be for Payton to play for the guy he replaced in Indy?

  101. jimmyshultz says: Mar 16, 2012 6:08 PM

I called this a perfect fit 3 weeks ago and to me it makes perfect sense!!! See Randy Moss gets a bad rap comments!

I was just puzzled as to why Wayne would not follow Manning. I believe Wayne would have went to Miami only and that he knew last week that was not going happen so he stayed home in Indy. It all makes sense now! The 49ers pull this off look out…I really believe it’s Niners or Denver at this point.

I think the 49ers need one more stud WR to finish this off!

I would make sure to pick the best WR in the draft with the 1st pick if I am San Fran. I would also even trade up to make sure I get a solid #1.

  102. shugray says: Mar 16, 2012 6:12 PM

Relax….Peyton is not coming out to the West. He’ll stay in the AFC, in Tennessee.

Manning knew he was going to the 49ers all along.

He does not want to go play there as a visitor.
He heard how the 49er fanbase(gangs) attack anyone and everyone (women and children included)wearing another teams jersey.

    __
As opposed to Pats fans, who try to play grabass with any guy that they can get close to.

    AFC yes…Tennessee… NOT

  107. claydog16 says: Mar 16, 2012 7:06 PM

How can anybody be surprised. You could see this coming. He is going to be 36 this year and he said he wants to win a Super Bowl. Neither Denver nor Tennessee gives him a real shot at that not to say that they couldn’t do it after all the 49ers went to the NFC Championship game after going 6-10 the previous year but looking at the 49ers this would be the best defense he ever play with. If he could score 20 points a game he would be hoisting the Super Bowl trophy in his hometown of New Orleans playing for a team that use to beat his father’s team twice a year every year. Since I don’t think Peyton Manning is stupid, I think he was dragging this out until he sees whether the 49ers would enter or not. In other words he pretty much knew what he wanted but he wanted to test the water in case the 49ers didn’t get in.
