Jets agree to deal with Drew Stanton

Drew Stanton AP

Manish Mehta of the New York Daily News reports that the Jets have agreed on a one-year contract with quarterback Drew Stanton.

Per Mehta, the deal is worth $1.25 million.

The Jets showed immediate interest in Stanton at the outset of free agency, pursuing him harder than any other team. (By a lot.) They closed the deal on Friday afternoon.

Stanton, 28 in May, has appeared on 13 career games. He’s completed just 55.6 percent of his 187 career pass attempts with a 5:9 touchdown-to-interception ratio.

The Jets will apparently place him at No. 2 on the depth chart, behind Mark Sanchez. Greg McElroy is currently No. 3.

Why not, can’t get any worse than Sanchez.

As funny as it is to say this, but this might actually increase their odds of winning a Super Bowl, LMFAO, Sancheese sucks. He played terrible in the playoffs and got bailed out by a great defense, yet people still act like he carried the team on his shoulders in the playoffs, hilarious

there is our free agency splash… im so irritated with the front office.. o well at least we don’t have Jeff Ireland

The Jets got Drew (the franchise) Stanton, wow. With Stanton it will be Super Bowl or Bust. Look out Mark Sanchez. There is a new QB in town.

  6. suckleague says: Mar 16, 2012 3:26 PM

Nice, he can learn behind Sanchez for a few years like Rodgers did under Favre. Tough to type that with a straight face.

The Pats would have probably given you Bryan Hoyer for a draft pick, just to keep this “rivalry” interesting.

  17. specialteamsposter says: Mar 16, 2012 3:30 PM

Seriously, Drew Stanton was brought to Detroit by Millen and despite several years of opportunities has shown NOTHING but the ability to help sell a few more tickets as a local favorite (He went to Michigan State).

  18. lks311 says: Mar 16, 2012 3:31 PM

He may, actually, give Sanchez a run for the starting position.

Not sure what that says about either QB…

The Jets depth chart is upside down. It should read:
    1) Stanton
    2) McElroy
    3) Sanchez

Personally I thought Quinn would have been a stronger candidate to give Sanchez competition.

  32. evinnie says: Mar 16, 2012 3:49 PM

McElroy showed a lot of promise before breaking his hand/finger in the preseason game, Stanton will probably be number #3 before the end of camp. Not a terrible move like all the Jet haters are saying it is

Dolphan, you’re right, the Fins are too insignificant to deserve mentioning on here. Especially after trading arguably your best player for below market value.

After the Pats’ most recent (FAILED) attempt to capitalize on the last few years of Brady’s career, The Jets are getting better, the Pats continue to make mediocre-to poor moves (while constantly being praised somehow) and the Fins seem determined to get worse.

I hate this. We’re going to miss him in Detroit. He played very well when Stafford and Hill were hurt. Best of luck though. He could easily end up being better than Sanchez.

  44. dolphan22 says: Mar 16, 2012 4:23 PM

How are the jets so much better?the raiders 4th receiver is your compliment to Holmes?lol you have one of the worse right tackles in the NFL,a below average starting running back, who the hell rushes the passer, who knows what’s goin on with your safeties.so don’t sit there and act like your oozing with talent, when you are below average and only in the news because of a loud mouth head coach and you pizza face qb poses gay pics with white pants.I would take any of our supposebly sorry receivers over anything you have over there besides Holmes..oh and the guy we fired to be your sorry teams o coordinator, may be a downgrade over schotty.lol

Given that he signed a 1 year, $1.25m contract, I can’t imagine the list of teams pursuing behind them could have been all that long.

I love all the Drew Stanton franchise QB jokes, and after we drafted him in the 2nd round there were plenty of Lions fans who were unhappy with his lack of production … but … I think this is a good pickup for the money.

What Stanton provides for the Jets is a drama-free roll player who does his job as expected. He’s not being paid to be a franchise QB. He’s being paid to help prep the defense for games.

When Stafford and Shaun Hill were both injured, Stanton came in and won games. It was a shock when he played so well. At the end of the season he didn’t try any shenanigans to get traded or get more money. He just worked through the remainder of his contract.

I don’t follow the Jets closely, but I think a low key guy who does his job very well is a good addition to that locker room.

  53. footballfan80 says: Mar 16, 2012 5:16 PM

    jade amor:

No offense but your freakin retarded! Do you even follow football?

You said Sanchez played poorly in the playoffs and the defense carried him. You do realize its exactly the opposite?

They lost bc of poor defense in the 2nd half against the Colts and in the 1st half against the Steelers.

So you are saying a 9TD-3INT ratio, a 60% completion percentage, a 4-2 road record in the playoffs, and a 94.3 QB rating ranked 7th all time in NFL playoff history is bad? So I guess what you are saying is that all QB’s in the history of the NFL have been bad in the playoffs except 6!

Suggestion-Start following the sport. Step 2 is then come post here. Dont do in reverse order.

  54. ahs2 says: Mar 16, 2012 5:21 PM

Stanton is tough, has strong arm, decent accuracy and can run… $1.25M for a back-up of his caliber is a good deal!

Gonna miss ya Drew, good luck!!!

  56. tigerman3 says: Mar 16, 2012 6:01 PM

Drew can manage a game like a back up should do. he’s just not the prettiest QB you will ever see. The Lions could be in deep trouble now if Shun Hill ends up in ST. Louis.

  57. themonster49 says: Mar 16, 2012 7:53 PM

I have been trying really hard to stay positive in my comments on PFT. I have cut back on my comments 10 fold, easily.

Why are the Jets doing this? First it was Sanchez’s huge contract that had me swallowing tooth shavings, and now it’s ‘The Jets showed immediate interest in Stanton at the outset of free agency, pursuing him harder than any other team. (By a lot.)’ for Drew Stanton?

Please no more… no more… I can’t take much more of my team squandering their chances of even being mediocre. I just wanna grab Tannenbaum (or Rex if he’s wanting these two QBs) and shake him really really hard and make my best “OMG” face and just yell over and over “WHY.”

As a NY Jets season ticket holder on the fence whether to renew or not it’s great to see the front office address the team’s biggest needs.

Or maybe I should think of it as an extra $4200 in my pocket and a few extra hours every Sunday.
