Jets sign former Raiders wideout Chaz Schilens

Chaz Schilens AP

The New York Jets announced Friday that they have signed wide receiver Chaz Schilens, formerly of the Raiders.

The Jets are incredibly thin behind Santonio Holmes at wideout. Jeremy Kerley is a slot receiver only, and free agent Plaxico Burress isn’t coming back. Other Jets receivers under control for 2012 include Logan Payne, Patrick Turner, and Dexter Jackson.

While the Jets figure to continue to add to the position, Schilens should stand a good shot at earning playing time in New York. He knows new receivers coach Sanjay Lal from their time together in Oakland, and has some intriguing tools if he can somehow figure out how to stay healthy.

Don’t know much about him except that he’s 6 feet 4. Hopefully he’s not a buffoon

Moss’ Season TD record will be in jeopardy now, lol!

  5. quizguy66 says: Mar 16, 2012 4:31 PM

Is Sanchez going to be able to get him the ball? That’s the key question.

This just in….. Chaz Schilens injured himself signing the contract.

  7. sergio408 says: Mar 16, 2012 4:32 PM

He never deserved the honor to wear #81 in Oakland.

  8. suckleague says: Mar 16, 2012 4:32 PM

    Manning – Harrison… Montana – Rice…
    Stanton – Schilens.

  9. torturedraiderfan says: Mar 16, 2012 4:33 PM

This guy is made of glass so the Jets are still thin at wide receiver.

    Championship!!!!

  11. autumnwind999 says: Mar 16, 2012 4:34 PM

    Good luck, Chaz.

Good guy. Good hands. Big target. Good speed and leaping ability for his size. Wish we could’ve kept him.

As has been noted repeatedly in the comments on pft the guy was pretty injury-prone in his time with the Raiders. Might continue, or maybe he’s turned the corner. If he stays healthy it’s a good signing for NY.

Great signing by the Jets, sneaky signing…

  13. sdb0ltz says: Mar 16, 2012 4:37 PM

Man oh man I hate the Jets…

  14. rickyrich14 says: Mar 16, 2012 4:39 PM

Sad to see him go. He finally managed to stay healthy last year. He prolly breaks out this year.

    Annoying.

  15. khuxford says: Mar 16, 2012 4:40 PM

It’s a signing with lots of potential. I’m guessing lower risk/higher reward here. Hope it works out.

  16. sergio408 says: Mar 16, 2012 4:41 PM

He will probably start the season on the P.U.P. list.

  17. essfjay says: Mar 16, 2012 4:42 PM

the guy showed some flashes at times that he could be a good WR. however, he could never bite the injury bug. i know why the jets signed him he has talent/potential just glad the raiders can now make use of the roster spot.

Another weapon for Sanchize. Jets offense looking mighty strong now.

They should just go ahead and put him on IR.

  22. lbraiders says: Mar 16, 2012 4:52 PM

I hope he doesn’t break his wrist signing a contract!!

I pity Bill Belichick, faced with the task of countering this bombshell. On who’s practice squad, or at which unemployment office will he find such a man ?

The Jets better fly him into New York in bubble wrap, otherwise he’s out for the year

  25. toolnutz says: Mar 16, 2012 5:09 PM

You will soon be calling him “Glass” Schilens like here in Oakland.

Glad to see rangenious has started his weekend libations early.

Good WR with brittle feet. Heck of an end zone target with his size, when you can keep him on the field.

    Good luck Chaz.

Every injury prone player here on PFT has the same stupid comment like these two wrote…It’s not even funny or original. Makes you sound like a corny lil kid.

Chaz Schilens is swahili for – just chillin

  30. raidermike34 says: Mar 16, 2012 6:01 PM

Chaz Schilens is a very fragile player with so much upside – i wish him the best he’s a good kid, and when healthy he can be a threat!! We’ll be sorry to see you go – but hope you make a mark now that you are in the middle of all the mecca!!

    Good luck Chaz.
Jets got a good bargain, dirt cheap.
If he can stay healthy he is solid on and off the field.

  32. j0esixpack says: Mar 16, 2012 6:22 PM

From the Raiders to the Jets. Out of the frying pan and into the fire.

  33. vincentbojackson says: Mar 16, 2012 6:24 PM

They need to sign some shortstops to corral Sanchez’s one-hoppers.

  34. steeltuff says: Mar 16, 2012 6:26 PM

Why aren’t they going after Mike Wallace? Can’t Sanchez throw the ball that far?

  35. RexCanCoach says: Mar 16, 2012 6:35 PM

    Bring back Cotchery.

  36. radrntn says: Mar 16, 2012 6:51 PM

i think this guy will be good if he can stay healthy, but seems like that is a mighty big “IF”

We all hope you’re joking… jets may not score 50 points this year

  38. warpd says: Mar 16, 2012 7:08 PM

WTF Chaz Schilens? Curt Schilling would have been a superior signing. You guys are cleaning up in free agency.

  39. joetoronto says: Mar 16, 2012 7:33 PM

    All the best, Chaz.

  40. nomoreseasontix says: Mar 16, 2012 8:17 PM

If Chaz can stay on the field, he has the tools to be a great receiver.
The problem is the staying on the field thing….

    I wish him the best…

  41. nyjyi says: Mar 16, 2012 10:23 PM

All these comments for an article about the singing of a depth receiver? Man, the collective obsession with the Jets is amazing. Yes, our team is more newsworthy than yours. Yes, our city is better than yours. Haters, focus on your own lesser existence.

  42. bigjoe2269 says: Mar 17, 2012 3:32 AM

nice pick up – he has a lot of upside and we dont have money to chase the top tier free agent wr’s and the second tier that a lot of teams overpaid for either

  43. AlohaMrHand says: Mar 17, 2012 8:24 AM

    when he isn’t hurt he’s a decent reciever.WHEN HE’S NOT HURT.

  44. monropoobah says: Mar 17, 2012 9:51 AM

why is kerley a ‘slot receiver only’?

  45. speedkills21 says: Mar 17, 2012 4:02 PM

Chaz Schilens makes Darren McFadden look indestructible… Best of luck to ya Jets!

  46. silvernblak says: Mar 17, 2012 7:09 PM

The only way Sanchez is going to be able to get chilin Schilin the ball is if he throws it to the benches on the sidelines where he will be sitting on IR!!!!!
