Philip Rivers wants to see Peyton Manning in Denver

The Broncos are already the defending champions in the AFC West, but if signing Peyton Manning makes them better, Chargers quarterback Philip Rivers says bring it on.

Rivers said he’s hoping the Broncos sign Manning because he would enjoy the challenge of playing against Manning twice a year.

“It would make it that much tougher to win the West,” Rivers said on San Diego’s XX 1090 radio, via the Denver Post. “All the sudden, at least from a media’s perspective, it would become a division that’s not lost in the shuffle like it’s been in years past. I kind of hope that that’s the case just because it’s always fun to play a Peyton Manning-led football team. To play him twice a year that would be a battle like crazy to win the division. I hope it happens. One thing you know about him, he’s going to be thorough and make the best decision for him that gives him the best chance to go win. And if that ends up being Denver then it will be exciting.”

So just as he once waved goodbye to Jay Cutler, Rivers is now ready to wave goodbye to Tim Tebow, and welcome Manning to the division.

  1. Rivers doesn’t care, because the Chargers are about to win their 10 straight pre-season Super Bowl.

  2. Manning needs to be surrounded by a TEAM. Go to SF! Denvers D just got lit up by the Pats in the playoffs. If that’s the type of defense Manning wants to play with, then he should have just stuck with the Colts (assuming they would have let him).

  3. Regular season games … that’s Rivers’ specialty. The Mannings are more into winning Superbowls.

  4. cause rivers and the chargers have always owned peyton, thats why he wants him there, peyton doesnt play good against a 3-4 defense

  5. Right, because beating the Tebow led Broncos was way too easy for the chargers. I guess I missed the chargers playoff game, can’t remember who they played??

If they are 1-4 in week 5 per usual, I fire all of them if I’m Spanos and trade Rivers the shock-putter while I still can. Seriously, does he have the strangest throwing motion or what? He’s good, but if you don’t or can’t put a playoff team and staff around him get what you can for him and rebuild.

  6. I wanted to say something snarky about the Chargers always jawing away…. but the truth is… I kind of like Rivers and his fiesty attitude.

This myth was dispelled a LONG time ago, as was the myth he can’t play outdoors

  8. Think he should worry enough about beating out guys like…matt cassel…tim tebow/orton and jason campbell/palmer because he hasnt been doing too hot the last couple years against these stellar names.

  9. whats the point… chargers mgmt has already given up on this year… they are dumping salary… the let VJ go… kept norv and promoted an astt coach…

they will be so bad this year that the SB talk will die down in presesason…

  10. So the Chargers always tank the first half of the season to make it more challenging? Finally it makes sense.

  11. @truthfactory

Ummm; I’m almost positive the Giants torched your team’s defense in the playoffs, no?

    – are you kidding me??/ First off he doesnt have the ability to stay in Indianapolis…secondly, are you really comparing Indies D to Denvers? I agree SF will give him a better chance to win but dont knock the only good thing about Denver, their D, which allowed one of jerry’s kids (Tim tebow) to win games!

  13. rivers know if the broncos sign peyton, dont wont have enough money to sign other good players cause he will do like he did the colts, tie up all the cap money on him and have to field the rest of the team wth discounted undrafted free agents, cause 30 million just on him this year….good luck in signing any other free agents to help the team, oh wait, they can sign stokley since hes been pole jocking peyton since he was released by the colts

  14. What past QB would you want to play for? Elway or Harbaugh? Harbaugh of course. Not! But I hope Peyton does go to 49ers or Titans. Than the Browns can get the ex starter. Smith or Hassel

  15. @joetoronto: Better than the Raiders having nine straight seasons w.o a winning record, including seven straight seasons with at least eleven losses (an NFL record).

  16. Philip Rivers is an elite QB, & that looks about as clear as daylight. He’s a real competitor, & I love it:) & he has outplayed Manning most times lol. Arriba los Chargers!

  17. not even a charger fan, but the truth is that they’ve owned peyton and the colts both in reg season and playoffs.
When you think about the only 2 times the colts went to the super bowl is when they didnt have to play the chargers in the playoffs. so we can come to the conclusion that if Marlon McCree hadnt fumbled against the Pats, Peyton would have zero rings right now. As much as I respect him on and off the field and as great as he’s been, you cant deny the fact that he doesnt play well in the palyoffs.

Why don’t you go dust that empty trophy case, loser.

  19. I’m surprised at all the negative comments. For those that followed the Chargers vs Colts game with both QB’s would know that even though the Chargers have the edge all the game have been fairly close and good battles. It’s good to see some positive competitiveness

  20. “It would make it that much tougher to win the West,”

Yep, because you won it last year…wait.

  21. Call it what you want the Chargers have fielded a team in several years that is capable of winning a SB. Now they have lost a couple of there best players. Good Luck SD in 2012!

At what point do we rename Pro Football Talk “Peyton Sweepstakes Talk”?

    ———————————————-

    Why read it then?

  23. I love how the media perpetuates the lie that Rivers was “waving goodbye” or “talking smack” to Cutler. His hands never even enter the screen…he’s patting his D on the ass and saying “Atta baby!” Watch the video and read his lips. Now, who he is directing the “Atta baby” at is up for debate, but that is hardly smack talk…he was reacting to what Cutler did:

It’s documented that Cutler grabbed his crotch at the Chargers’ sideline and made the “Suck it” gesture. They were down 23-3. They lost 44-3.

  24. As a Raider fan, I feel the same way Rivers does. It’ll make the AFC West relevant again.
With the Raiders on the way to acting like a legit franchise again, it’s looking like exciting times are ahead….

  25. why all the hate for Rivers? He’s super competitive and doesn’t want his wins, or lack thereof, to come easy. I like the attitude, it’s refreshing to see some real men with competitive attitudes.
