Report: Manning plans to sign early next week

Peyton Manning speaks at a press conference announcing his release from the Indianapolis Colts in Indianapolis Reuters

NFL Network’s Albert Breer reported late Friday that free agent quarterback Peyton Manning has informed the three finalists for his services — Denver, Tennessee, and San Francisco — that he plans to choose a new team “on Monday or Tuesday.”

Per Breer, folks involved with the Manning tour remain skeptical of whether Peyton will stick to that timeline. For good reason. Manning initially planned to sign with a team early this past week, but he never did. And in the meantime, two new teams (Titans, 49ers) jumped into the bidding.

As Florio has noted, all three teams left pursuing Manning are flush with salary cap space and don’t necessarily need an imminent decision in order to continue executing their free agency approach.

The 49ers would probably like a quick one, though, because their fallback option at quarterback, Alex Smith, is an unrestricted free agent.

I don’t think the Niners are too concerned- not a lot of teams are beating down Alex’s door.

It’s all good. Miami is low-balling Flynn, we could make him an offer “he can’t refuse”

Next Friday’s headline: Peyton reportedly will make a decision early next week.

    And on we go.

Please don’t be Denver. I named my son after Peyton, but I will consider him Judas if he has to play my chiefs twice a year.

    I’d say the order is:

    49ers
    Broncos
    Titans

  14. sundayisthebestday says: Mar 16, 2012 10:42 PM

It’s a big decision for Peyton. I don’t blame him for taking all the time he needs. It seems like a lot of time has passed since the Colts cut him, but that’s only because the media has been covering the story nonstop.

  15. txxxchief says: Mar 16, 2012 10:43 PM

I used to like Peyton Manning, and I thought he was a class act. Not anymore. He’s just trying to figure out where the best stick-up is.

  17. thereisfootballwestofjersey says: Mar 16, 2012 10:45 PM

Its pretty simple here. If this guy wants another world championship, the Titans and the Broncos DO NOT have the defense to get it done. That leaves the Niners.

    Case closed

As a matter of fact, the doctors say his neck is actually STRONGER now than it was before the fusion. So I beg of you, PLEASE QUIT with all the one hit and he’s done B.S!

I have yet to see one credible rumor or source that Manning has in any way shape or form had contact with San Fran.

Just media speculation that “he would be a good fit”

Atleast with Tenn and Denver there was confirmation, with San Fran we got the owner making a mockery of the rumors with twitter jokes.

    Honestly people.

  36. clayton43 says: Mar 16, 2012 11:03 PM

If he wants to win and best chance to go to a Sperbowl… I would think 49ers would be the team he would choose. Without Manning, the 49ers will have a tougher time doing as well as last year because they now play a first place schedule but with Manning I think can win that division again and also be on par with G.B and Giants as far as overall talent ect ect.. I think would have a tougher time winning and getting to a Superbowl in Denver and Tenn because I dont think overall those teams are as good and division might be up for grabs.

  37. goldrush36 says: Mar 16, 2012 11:04 PM

Can’t help but feel bad for Alex. Poor kid has been dicked every way possible by the organization and keeps coming back for more. Can’t help but have this feeling that not only will Peyton go to Denver, but Alex will tell them to pound sand and take off to Seattle or Cleveland leaving us stuck with Kaepernick. Honestly couldn’t blame him either but if Peyton says no, Jim better put that Alex man crush into hyperdrive and do some mending because there aren’t any other options. Can’t believe those words would ever come out of my mouth either but at least Alex didn’t lose games for us

  38. 14d134725 says: Mar 16, 2012 11:06 PM

  39. cannonballdookie says: Mar 16, 2012 11:07 PM

If the Seattle Seahawks were smart, they would give Alex Smith an enticing contract offer so the 49ers can have no one to fall back on if they can’t get Peyton.

Even though he is a game manager, Smith “managed” the game much better than a lot of other QB’s last year and teams should have interest in him. He should take his blinders off and realize that, especially now that SF is trying to get someone better than him.

  40. 69finfan says: Mar 16, 2012 11:08 PM

Per this report Peyton will choose a new team by Monday or Tuesday and I firmly believe that. However, it doesn’t say anything about informing said team or other teams of his decision. Then there is the business of signing contracts. If he can stretch this out he will, he loves the attention (or Archie does). It’s been reported that the Bungles have the most cap room and haven’t spent a dime. Maybe they’ll now enter the fray. Please let the Peytonsanity end.

That thin Orange thread that kept me wishing the best for you, even though you never played for my Phins is now non-existent. Using the Fins as a way to drive up your asking price, only to dump the Fins once Bud Adams gave you better leverage was a lowlife move. But so long as its not about the MONEY, RIIIGHT!

If the Niners sign Peyton for the $18mil he wants then that leaves us with $5.5mil to sign our draft picks and any other FAs we might want. So that’d mean we’d need to get any other WR talent we want through the draft as well as O-Line. That means no Brandon Lloyd and no Mike Wallace. =/

Well that will be pretty hard considering you won’t be stumbling and falling backwards into a fluke playoff run again. You won’t have Newman to pick on in big D. PHI has to get at least a little better… Washington spanked you twice with a much worse roster than they should be fielding next year. I think it’s a pretty safe bet the Giants don’t even make the playoffs the next 2-3 years

Exactly where have you been? You likely couldn’t even turn on CMT today without seeing that Harbaugh and Roman worked out Manning Tuesday… BEFORE anyone else did

  56. giantsfan2104 says: Mar 16, 2012 11:50 PM

I know I’ll upset a few fans here, but I’d be surprised if he signs with the 49ers.
Harbaugh has total control of that offense, and Peyton prefers calling his own plays. If they don’t agree on EVERYTHING, there might be a problem.

Usually when two control freaks disagree on something, all hell breaks loose.

  57. chawk12thman says: Mar 16, 2012 11:51 PM

Hoping to see him go to Denver……..Then the press can go nuts with Tebow and where he would end up. One can only imagine the comments from the Tebow supporters/fans. Hard to argue stats so everyone will argue how he “tilts the field” or all he does is “win”. It could be fun to watch.

And then we will be at about the time to focus on the draft. Good way to pass the time.

  58. eknirb says: Mar 16, 2012 11:52 PM

#18 on the field + Harbaugh on the sidelines = SB for Niners.

Losing respect for Manning is just plain idiotic. He didnt have to come back to play. He has tons of money and could have been on tv on some level for work. He worked hard to get back to his level and his team cut him. He wants to make sure he is comfortable with the team he signs with. Im sure its weird when youve been with one team for his whole career and is now in a spot to choose a new home. I respect the hell out of Manning he shows that he loves what he does.

  62. bspurloc says: Mar 17, 2012 12:33 AM

  70. dirtyjersey9er says: Mar 17, 2012 2:29 AM

I am seeing people acting like Alex Smith is suddenly going to get petty. A few years ago the team flew in Kurt Warner for a visit and he still stuck around.

I think Alex is mature enough to know the only reason the 49ers are in this race is because it’s Peyton Manning. If this were a story about Matt Flynn or someone of the ilk we wouldn’t be having this discussion and Alex would currently be signed with the 49ers.

Considering the two have the same agent I wouldn’t be surprised if Alex knew about this when it happened so I am pretty sure if he wanted to screw the team over he would have went elsewhere by now.

  71. tocolts says: Mar 17, 2012 2:32 AM

For everyone blaming Peyton for taking so long to decide you should really keep this in perspective. Peyton was cut(understandibly given the colts rebuild) He now has to make a decision that will likely affect the rest of his career. As everyone keeps pointing out hes 36 and likely wont play for another team after this so be patient or blame the media if anything for reporting on every move.

  72. txnative61 says: Mar 17, 2012 2:52 AM

49ers were very close to taking it all last year, considering the Giants went on to win the Championship. The problem with tinkering with almost is chemistry. How much was due to the team’s unity, and overachieving for other teammates? Bringing in Moss and Manning could put them over the top, or blow up locker room chemistry. Most complete team for Manning though, no doubt. Smith should feel honored to hold his clipboard, and stay ready.

  75. kenyonsupertramp says: Mar 17, 2012 5:24 AM

    Titans
    Denver
    Niners
I like the combo with C Johnson. Peyton has to be thinking about that horse in the stable. They have a couple decent wr, a tight end, and a pick to add wr. I think the pieces fit better in nashville…same division helps. Funny how the talk was how he would chose a dome or inside facility….hhmm

  76. go9ers says: Mar 17, 2012 6:34 AM

A few things to remember about the 49ers:
    1) they gave up more sacks than any other team, and lost Snyder in free agency without replacing him. They do not have a great O line for pass protection nor cap space to fix it if they land Peyton.
    2) Peyton hasn’t toured the SF facilities like he has elsewhere. It could indicate he’s less serious about SF. If it was only because SF wanted secrecy, you would expect to see him there in person now that the news has broken if he is seriously considering SF.
    3) The stadium in SF will be seen by him as a negative. The new one will be ready just in time for him to retire.
    4) The Seahawks would be wise to swoop in now and sign Alex Smith. He’s an upgrade for them at QB, they have the cash and cap space, and could seriously damage a divisional opponent by grabbing him. I’m no Smith fan, but who else can we get if Peyton signs elsewhere? Garrard? Capernick isn’t ready.

  77. wehrmactblitz says: Mar 17, 2012 6:40 AM

When I saw Randy Moss signed w/SF, It almost made me think Peyton would go there. But as I have stated here and always thought there is NO way he will sign w/a NFC club.

It’s a family thing, that IS the reason Eli would not sign w/the Chargers being big bro was in the AFC. Archie will not have one son knocking the other out of the playoffs.

The master family plan is for both boys to have a chance of each other meeting in the Super Bowl. That is the only way those two brothers will face each other in the post sans regular season

So look for Peyton to sign w/Denver and Tebow to be traded to JAX. That will get the new owner out of the mess he got himself in regarding “True Jaguar fans”.

2011 49ERS win the Super bowl hands down with a healthy Ted Gin & a healthy Josh Morgan and competent zebras in the NFC Championship game, but I am torn with signing Peyton he is a great QB but yet a gamble….. The only Lombardi 18 has ever hoisted was decided in a close game Vs Rex Grossmans’ Bears.. He tends to unravel in the playoffs or the big game, sky is the limit but in the history of the NFL no Super bowl champion QB has ever won a ring with another organization still a crap shoot..!!

Pros and cons for the three finalists
    Titans pros, know the division
Cons, play industry twice a year
Broncos pros, weaker division to win
Cons, colder than the other two teams
    Niners pros, good defense
cons, NFC, don’t want to knock brothe out of the superbowl.
I would be surprise if manning joined the niners, do you really want to bring your family to the bay. Who is he gonna throw to? Moss! Yeah you have davis and crabtree but that is it. As for the titans, CJ is gonna want to run the ball alot, Peyton wants to throw alot, how do they coinsist

And in one maybe two years the Niners will be looking for a QB again. I think it’s Denver all the way. He would like to be associated with Elway, in a smaller AFC market and in a football- first town.

He said Monday or Tuesday cause he’s hoping another teams joins the fiasco and offer him that money, greedy swamp boy as somebody on here says, Peyton is showing his true colors, greedy n don’t care about team being able to sign other good FA’s, just as he did the colts for 14 years!!!

ramjam….you are right, he did not have to come back, after stealing that money last year from the colts for not playing, he does have alot of money. if all he wants is a chance at a ring, the deal would have been done by now. there are a few teams that he could put over the top. the only reason a deal isnt done yet is because he is gonna squeeze all the money out of it as he can. the deal wont be done next week if another team with money seems interested. such a scam and we fans will glorify him for it.

Lots of stuff going on. Still can’t get over the report about Andy R. talking with Tebow. Andy has done strange things involving QB’s before. Is He going to do it again ?

So all the teams that don’t have an established QB are out of the race but the 3 teams he wants to go to have decent QB’s…. am I missing something??

So Brady, Brees, Rodgers, Eli, Ben….are all greedy and don’t care about their teams too? All have some pretty big contracts.

Fact: Irsay publicly stated he wanted to make Peyton the highest paid player. Peyton said that wasn’t necessary and signed for the same amount as Brady.

Fact: The contract he was offered had a much higher guarantee with no option clause for the Colts if he wasn’t healthy. He told them to put the option in there so they could get out of the contract. He had no option out clause.

Bottom line is he could have gotten several more million dollars from the Colts, but HE had them structure the contract for less money and less guaranteed money.

Give the guy a break…if you had a choice between 3 good jobs…..3 different cities/climates) wouldn’t you want to take your time and think all things through. It is just not Peyton but his family he has to consult as well.
This is a big decision. My vote….Broncos

Here’s hoping Manning doesn’t make his decision based on Tenn. offer of front office employment after his playing time.

NFL has already issued a statement that a contract like that wouldn’t get approved. Ownership stakes have to be voted on and anything with FO job or things like that would be a possible salary cap violation. Bud Adams is just talking like a fan would.
