Vontaze Burfict bombs his Pro Day, too

Vontaze Burfict AP

Arizona State linebacker Vontaze Burfict bombed the Combine. His interviews were described as disastrous, and his forty time and jumps were pathetic compared to the rest of the linebackers invited to Indianapolis.

So Burfict surely prepared and rebounded at his Pro Day, right?

Wrong.

According to SI.com draft analyst Tony Pauline, Burfict was “not good in position drills” at the Sun Devils’ Friday workout, and Pauline acknowledged that he’s “watering that down.” One scout told Pauline he “actually felt bad for [Burfict].”

Burfict managed only 16 reps of 225 pounds on the bench press. With poor measurables and game tape, and suspect on- and off-the-field character, Burfict may struggle to be drafted at all in April.

Good thing he’s got his education he got for free to fall back on, right?

  2. dixon29 says: Mar 16, 2012 4:51 PM

The guy is going to get drafted. Somebody will definitely take a chance on this guy. The measurements at the Combine and his Pro Day aren’t what they need to be but he definitely has talent and could benefit from sitting a year or two.

  3. camssportsjam says: Mar 16, 2012 4:53 PM

with all the negative press surrounding this guy, I can’t help but think there’s an agenda behind it. But it all seems like there are legit concerns here. A guy can’t possible shoot himself in the foot this many times…right? I feel bad for the guy almost :(

  4. skinsdiehard says: Mar 16, 2012 4:53 PM

He’ll still get an opportunity as an undrafted free agent due to his age and potential. After about 3 years of bouncing around the NFL, he’ll be done. Save your money kid.

  5. mustafa67 says: Mar 16, 2012 4:53 PM

Pathetic, I played college ball last in ’94 and was not even close to being NFL caliber and I did 20 reps of 225 a few months ago. And I work out only 3 times a week! This guy should be ashamed of himself.

  6. elmaxoh says: Mar 16, 2012 4:54 PM

This guy CAN’T play football at the next level.

  7. 305phinphan says: Mar 16, 2012 4:54 PM

I hope the Dolphins use a 7th rounder on him!

  8. Patriot42 says: Mar 16, 2012 4:54 PM

Surely you jest. You mean this guy assumed his greatness would carry him and he really didn’t need to prepare.

  17. jrillah10 says: Mar 16, 2012 4:59 PM

Who cares what his combine numbers looked like. The guy was a beast on the field. Please let him fall to the Bucs in round 3 or 4. I will gladly take a flyer on him.

  18. kheaphy says: Mar 16, 2012 4:59 PM

Sad to think he was projected as possibly the best LB in the 2012 draft before his junior season, and this is where he is now. Way to show the work ethic.

  19. youdownwithjpp says: Mar 16, 2012 4:59 PM

The combine and draft don’t account for the most important indicators in a player. Heart and the desire to be great. Look at Victor Cruz’s draft report. And of course we’ve seen the Brady 6.

“Negatives: One-speed receiver who does not get separation down the field. Lacks the big frame most teams desire in a possession wide out.

Analysis: Cruz has been incredibly productive the past two seasons and is a skilled pass catcher with reliable hands. He could make it as a team?s fifth receiver if he proves his worth on special teams this summer.”

5th rec?? NOPE. Does not get seperation down field?! Broke so many ankles this year (and last year in preseason) and had so many big plays down the field…

  20. descendency says: Mar 16, 2012 4:59 PM

Zero percent chance this guy gets drafted.

Poor measurables. (his actual physical talent is a lot higher than what he’s demonstrating…)
    Abysmal attitude.
    Quit on his team.
    Abysmal football IQ.
    Lots of struggles on field.
    Penalty machine.

  21. rajbais says: Mar 16, 2012 5:00 PM

  23. realitypolice says: Mar 16, 2012 5:00 PM

OK, all of you GMs out there.

All of the necessary warning flags are there: Bad tape, bad workouts, bad interviews.

You burn a draft pick on this train wreck, that’s a you problem. Don’t come back to us yammering about potential when this guy is out of the league in two years.

  24. 49ersmang says: Mar 16, 2012 5:00 PM

if you can’t manage more than 16 reps of 225 pounds on the bench, you shouldn’t be in the NFL.

  25. pftard says: Mar 16, 2012 5:01 PM

I’m 42 years old and haven’t played football since High School. I’m a recreational weight lifter by hobby. I can (and have) bench 225 over 16 times. I’m more than happy to take league minimum for any team that wants me. BTW, 6.2 40 time, vertical leap, almost 9ft.

The team that always takes a chance on knuckleheads in the draft is the Bucs, and they’ll draft this kid

  29. lilrob10201 says: Mar 16, 2012 5:04 PM

  32. dukemarc says: Mar 16, 2012 5:07 PM

  33. cdrion21 says: Mar 16, 2012 5:07 PM

16 reps at 225!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!? Seriously, i weigh 180 and my warm up set on bench is 5 sets, 15 reps at 225!!!

  34. okieviacal says: Mar 16, 2012 5:08 PM

This reminds me of when Donovan Warren from Michigan was rumored to be a first round pick and then went undrafted to the Jets. I can’t imagine Burfict going undrafted, but stranger things have happened. If was just the poor workout numbers and the senior season production drop off, I’d thing he’d go by the 5th or 6th, but the attitude thing can really really kill a player’s stock.

  35. ou812ahole says: Mar 16, 2012 5:09 PM

This guy has not been good since his freshman year. Look at the tape. He doesn’t read and react well which leaves him out of position on too many plays. He has been living on his high school reputation and freshman year tape for the last two years. Of course that is because the coaches at Arizona State messed with his mind and expected him to practice, work out, and watch his weight.

Slow, fat, and stupid is no way to go through life.

BALTIMORE RAVENS – LATE ROUND PICK

They got strong locker room, they leaders who can push the misguided player.

I would only throw a 7th round pick at this guy, and I will always be hesitant of paying him any $$$, if he ever turns it around.

But I can see RAVENS taking a shot at him late, I mean no one can enter that locker room with an attitude, except maybe for Chuck Norris!

  67. autumnwind999 says: Mar 16, 2012 5:51 PM

  68. Born Again Fitness.Com says: Mar 16, 2012 5:59 PM

  69. malbosia says: Mar 16, 2012 6:03 PM

I saw him play on tv a few times and he looked good. He was quick to the ball and it seemed like he had good football instincts. He obviously needs a reality check and it seems like he is going to get it come April. He reminds me of James Harrison-not the best athlete, especially out of college, but he plays mean. I think the Ravens(Suggs played at Arizona St.), Steelers or Jets take him. Those teams seem like a good fit for him especially with their veteran players and coaches.

  75. deangelo1776 says: Mar 16, 2012 6:21 PM

I don’t think I have ever seen a fall so drastic as Burfict’s. Way back in January, some mock drafts had him being in the top 20. Fast forward two months and this dude has his work cut out for him to be drafted. Without a doubt, I’m sure a team will take a chance on him during the draft, but I can’t believe a player like him didn’t fully prepare himself for his pro day.

If I had this man’s talent, I would be working my ass off everyday and learning to quit being such a knucklehead.

Went from a preseason all-american to honorable mention pac-12. ASU fans are glad he bolted for the NFL because we don’t want him around. He’s T.O. without any shred of talent. He was great in high school (from what I read). He was below average at ASU. I never understood the hype. There were 5-7 players better than him on a bad ASU defense last season. I remember this guy running around blowing up people in high school, and intimidating…then when some people actually blocked him out of position and he got worked, he would react…then he’d turn around and smash ball carriers to the turf, spear people.

He’s all over the place…he even put a dirty hit on Matt Barkley during their high school match-up. He’s a head case…maybe the right locker room can turn him around, but he’s got to grow up.
