Getty ImagesThe San Diego Chargers announced Saturday that they have re-signed backup tight end Randy McMichael.
McMichael, who turns 33 in June, is San Diego’s No. 2 tight end behind Antonio Gates. Gates has struggled with foot problems over the past two seasons, so McMichael has received plenty of playing time. He’s racked up 50 catches for 492 yards and two touchdowns during that period.
The Chargers also re-signed Kory Sperry earlier in the week. Sperry is San Diego’s No. 3 tight end. H-back type Brad Taylor rounds out the tight end depth chart in San Diego.

he’s only 33? I thought he was like 50…. he was catching for Fiedler…
Remember when this dude was a LOLPHIN?
Randy McMichael is hardly a back up player at all….this title is all wrong….McMichael plays H Back…he hardly ever leaves the field….just because this team has Gates doesn’t make McMichael a backup.
If you people running this website are gonna pretend to be experts….know your sport before you just blindly mess up a title!
Norvs offense flexes the TE out into the slot, therefore a lot of so called experts call that n H back. H back is just a fancy word for a TE lined up in the slot away from the offensive tackle.
Ronald-he also lines up in the backfield @ Running Back 1/3 of the time…
An H Back describes a TE who also plays Fullback….not just a TE who lines up in the slot!
More accurately, he’s an F-back
Thanks for the education. That being said, the chargers will not contend in the AFC West this year.
mcmichael is legit. when gates was out last season they never threw the ball to him. obviously thats on norv
His role will change greatly if the Chargers go to a traditional fullback. He was always in motion on the running plays, I think thats why thier running game suffered the last few years.
I don’t know about a 1/3 of the time but your right he does take snaps lined up in the backfield. Bolts also use Jacob Hester as their FB, he is undersized and can’t take on LBs very well.
