Court finds collusion = no more cap = baseball salary structure. Works for me as a Giants fan. NY is pressed up right against the cap. Make it go away and we have a Super Bowl Contending team for the next decade. Sue ‘em, Danny & Jerruh!!! Make that cap go away. Maybe Mara realized the cap was killing his team and specifically targeted the two most volatile and egotistical owners hoping they would blow up.

====

You should know what you're talking about before running your mouth. The salary cap is agreed upon in the CBA between the players union and the league, so there's no legal grounds to remove it. The issue at hand is that after an "uncapped year" you have 30 teams retroactively changing the rules and punishing two teams for actually, you know, treating it like an uncapped year. A salary cap becomes collusion if and only if it is not negotiated with the players union - as was the case in 2010. There's absolutely nothing illegal about the salary cap as it exists today.

The only reason the league got the players union involved on their side was to make it more difficult for a lawsuit to go through. They redistributed the cap taken away from Washington and Dallas to the other 30 teams for the sole purpose of keeping the union happy. Had the league just taken the money out of the cap, who does that really hurt? Certainly not the owners; it's a removal of cap space, not a fine. That's money taken straight out of the players' pockets. If the league hadn't do that, it would be 2 owners AND the players union against the league rather than two owners against 30 + the players.

In 1995, the NFL sued Jerry Jones for $350 million for brokering stadium sponsorship deals with Pepsi and Nike that NFL Properties, Inc. characterized as against NFL rules.

Jones counter-sued for $750 million dollars because he believed that the deals broke no existing rules. The NFL knew it had no stable ground on which to stand, dropped it's suit and today, stadium sponsorship deals are the norm.

The NFL, with Paul Tagliabue leading the charge, made a similar backdoor deal with the NFLPA for salary cap considerations, and countered with voiding the contract that Deion Sanders signed with the Cowboys, made the "Deion Sanders Rule", and applied it retroactively to include Sanders' contract.

The Cowboys countered that with winning the Super Bowl anyway. If you think that Jerry Jones is afraid to sue the NFL, you'd better think again. He's been there and done that already.

What I’ve noticed is that no one denies that the Skins and Cowboys did it. Yes, they cheated. Just because it’s not a written law doesn’t mean it’s not cheating. I know it’s a hard pill to swallow for all the Skins and Cowboys fans. But to let them get away with it would be unfair.

How quickly some of these small market owners turn on the cash cows of the League. For teams like the Bills and Bengals and the rest of the small market teams and their respective owners if not for the profit sharing of Dan Snyder and Jerry Jones they would be gone, or gasp have to spend their own money to run their teams instead of Jones’ and Snyder’s.

You do realize there was no profit-sharing in that uncapped year, right? I remember there was an attempt to keep profit-sharing out of this CBA and the players were arguing to keep profit-sharing in against owners that wanted it out.

All 32 owners agreed to the uncapped year when they agreed to the last CBA. All 32 owners agreed to put the uncapped year into affect when they all agreed to let the last CBA expire. The small market teams were scared to death that the more successful teams would spend crazy amounts of money and leave them in the dust so they got together and tried to enforce a form of collusion to get spending down. And now they're trying to make Jones and Snyder out to be the bad guys.

Sorry six warnings of a back-room "wink-wink" deal is not a violation of anything. And is no way any form of cheating.

The NFL owners are about to find out that the antitrust laws do apply to them. Their have admitted that they tried to create an informal conspiracy in restraint of trade in the "uncapped" year and that those who were most blatant in their refusal to cooperate in this conspiracy will be punished.

Getting the NFLPA to sign off on this scheme retroactively is not collective bargaining, particularly when it is done under obvious duress. It was foolish for the NFLPA to go along with this, because it means lower salaries for free agents no matter how you slice it. The NFL is going to lose this battle ultimately, and the net effect will be to help the players in their ongoing battle for a fair share of NFL revenues.

The only downside for Snyder if he goes nuclear is that he will become the new Al Davis, no longer a mamer in good standing of the old boys' club. If I was him, i would say who gives a shoot. Some of the owners obviously already want to screw him anyway.

Both teams were in CAP hell because of years of miss management. Clown Jerry and his brother clown Dan tried to circumvent the system during the in CAP season by signing players to front loaded contracts the likes of which the NFL has never seen. They were the only two teams in the league to do so hence the punishment. If both had been smarter and added smaller amounts of money on multiple contracts neither would have been caught. To bad, they lose.

About time I read something like this and I hope the Cowboys/Redskins do sue everyone for this.

Doesn't matter if you like/hate either team but for the NFL to penalize the teams for not participating in collusion (an illegal activity) and then blackmailing the NFLPA as well as abusing their job posts ie. Goodell/Mara they should be fired.

Unfortunately the damage has already been done as they can never sign the FAs they wanted to this year, but I hope they get some justice and their salary cap get's restored asap.

Hate to say this but this has been one of the most unfair events I have seen in sports history.

The fact that you tell a team a day before FA that they are going to take their cap space away shows how badly they tried to hurt the teams.

Let's keep this simple. If no rules were broken, how can you retroactively penalize a team? From two years no less. Makes no sense. The NFL colluded to penalize these two teams...and I fail to see, based on their performance how or where they achieved a competitive advantage.
Sue or threaten to sue, and I bet the league will recind their inexcusable action. The NFL doesn't stand a chance in court, based on legalities, nor do they want to chance to inevitable adverse publicity.

Very appreciative of your coverage of this scandal Mike. It's refreshing to hear someone not just sweep this under the rug or have an "oh well, you shoulda" attitude towards the Skins and Boys.

This is personal, Jones and Snyder have made plenty of enemies. What needs to be realized here is that these are the two top grossing franchises in the NFL by far and so should they decide to drop the grenade, they may be the only two that could withstand the blow financially. Should be interesting as it plays out.

Whatever happens, the NFL needs to be on notice that they can't just sit up in their ivory tower and hand down bogus penalties without any accountability. If something isn't done now, it will need to be done in the future.

Jones & Snyder are good businessmen but crappy NFL GM's/owners. Got caught with their hand in the cookie jar. Jerry just deal with it and then go hire some real football minds and stop trying to use your overly concussed brain to make personnel and contract decisions. There was no cheating. The labor agreement agreed to an uncapped year. Like with a signing bonus, there was some risk involved in all that guaranteed money up front...but additional risk in not doing it as a signing bonus. For instance, if any player decided to retire or walk after that, the team couldn't sue for any of it returned, since it was contractually his one year salary.

But, again, these two weren't even the only ones to do it. And they broke no rules. Cheating requires there to be a rule that was broken, no?
