Rex Grossman agrees to one-year deal with Redskins

Perry Riley, Rex Grossman, Fred Davis AP

Although he’s no longer in the team’s plans as the long-term starter, Rex Grossman will stay with the Redskins for another season.

A league source tells PFT’s Mike Florio that Grossman has agreed to a one-year deal with the Redskins.

The move means Grossman will serve as the veteran backup and mentor to Robert Griffin III, who will surely go to the Redskins with the second overall pick, and perhaps start early in the season if the Redskins don’t think Griffin is ready to go in Week One.

Grossman arrived in Washington in 2010 as the backup to Donovan McNabb but ended up replacing McNabb as the starter late in the season. He then started 13 games in 2011, completing 265 of 458 passes for 3,151 yards, with 16 touchdowns and 20 interceptions.

    Even RGIII needs a backup.

  2. jeremywflores says: Mar 17, 2012 8:09 PM

Rex will tell RG3 “We have to go deeper…”

“That guy over there … that’s RG3 our #1 pick … if he needs anything you go fetch it.”

I think we will be a solid BACKUP qb for the skins.

He knows the system and if RG3 gets hurt for a game or two, Rex is viable for sure.

Too many mistakes to be a 16 game starter, but ill take him for a few quarters if its needed.

i hope he’s a better teacher than QB

Good move!!! Rex Grossman may not be a good starter for us but he’s a top notch backup quarterback.

    Is mcnabb coming back? haha

This move is going to get a lot of hate, but it is a fantastic move. Grossman is a terrible starter, but he is a solid, solid, solid backup. Plus he has spent 3 years in the offense. I like it (as long as he doesn’t play many games).

  9. gregthomas77 says: Mar 17, 2012 8:15 PM

This is a good move. The Redskins need to draft a late rounder to fill in the 3rd QB spot and dump Beck. Beck was pretty worthless, Grossman is a decent backup and has tons of experience with the offense and should be able to help tutor Robert Griffin III.

he was statically the second worst qb in the league last year…HAIL

  11. roamingabriel says: Mar 17, 2012 8:18 PM

This one makes no sense to me. I would think you’d want a fresh start with RG3…

You mean theyre not going all in with RG3?

  13. footballfanman says: Mar 17, 2012 8:20 PM

Happy with the signing. Knows the system, perhaps he’ll play better with better receivers and a stronger o-line. Hell he beat the Giants twice last year.

  14. aaroncurryisbust says: Mar 17, 2012 8:21 PM

LOLSKINS! RGIII is gonna have a blast learning behind the Sex Cannon.

    He’s lucky to get it.

    Somewhere John Beck is crying.

  17. kegowhisky says: Mar 17, 2012 8:24 PM

He’s better than Beck and does know the system. I don’t think he’ll be able to convince RG3 that the right way to play is to just throw it no matter what. Probably a good move; let’s hope the Shanny’s have this one right.

  18. delshofner says: Mar 17, 2012 8:25 PM

Yeah, RG3’s cardio endurance for the 2:00 drill may not be up to snuff early on.

Its amazing how a stiff like Grossman can get so much mileage out of that one lucky Super Bowl year with the Bears. Kind of like Trent Dilfer did with that one year that the Ravens defense got them to the Super Bowl.

  28. hailvictory10 says: Mar 17, 2012 8:57 PM

NOOOOOOOO can’t take anymore Rex. Even as a backup. I’m Rex-Ed out

  29. renhoekk2 says: Mar 17, 2012 8:59 PM

They should let Rex start the season so the Shanahans can have some good game film to show RG3 of all the things not to do in running their system.

  31. deadmanwalking47 says: Mar 17, 2012 9:13 PM

He may know the offense, but he sure can’t run it worth a $hit! lets pray that rg3 is a very fast learner!
i would have rather signed david gerrard cause he is nowhere as bad as grossman was last year!

  32. gweez76 says: Mar 17, 2012 9:24 PM

Dude!! Great post, but there is one word in it I and all of Redskins Nation would have liked if you kept it out. In your last sentence you used “play many games”. How about using as long as he does not play in ANY games. Don’t even give him a helmet this year. The only think he should have is a clipboard. If he plays in any regular season games I will go outside and pull my DIRECTV dish (two thumbs up Sunday ticket) out of the ground. HTTR!!!

  34. walter0247 says: Mar 17, 2012 9:31 PM

now pay attention RG3…. THIS is how you throw into triple coverage. And THIS is how you hold the ball when you want to make a fumble happen.

  35. mikelitoris1 says: Mar 17, 2012 9:36 PM

Kurt Coleman is quite pleased with this signing.

Never understood all the Grossman hate. If you look at his UF stats they are almost identical to Tim Tebow but somehow Rex is a bum and Tebow is a hero. As for the NFL, Tebow will never come close to Rex’s numbers. Grossman’s been in the league for 10 years and that’s no laughing matter.

the media and draft experts have banged in our heads that Andrew Luck will be the #1 Pick…Colts may shock everyone and take RGIII as 1st pick..Luck was projected to win heisman, but snubbed by RGIII..just saying..Luck could be #2

I agree. It’s always been one of those great mysteries of life how a guy that won two National Championships (yeah, i know only one as the starter) and a Heisman trophy gets more love than a guy that won nothing.

Let me guess, you’re one of those people that complains about too much Tebow coverage, yet you just brought him up in post that had nothing to do with him.

You are an idiot. Rex Turnover is not even in the same league as Tim Tebow. Tebow is a better quarterback than Rex Turnover.

I wouldn’t even want Rex Turnover holding the team clipboard because he’s liable to fumble it, and have the other team recover it.

The best thing they can do is have RG3 watch tape of Rex Turnover, and teach him NOT to do what Sexy Rexy does.

By the way…Rex Grossman is a bum. The only reason he won in Chicago was because of the defense…not because Rex was some great quarterback.

Your an idiot, and should watch more football before you come on here asking a stupid question about why everyone hates Rex Turnover.

He’s not Rex Grossman to me…he’s Rex Turnover…always has been and always will be…and there’s no idiot on some sports blog that will ever change my mind.

I’ve watch Rex with the Bears, and he’s no different now than he was when he was with the Bears. He is not only a bum, but he SUCKS!

  46. stricknineskinz says: Mar 17, 2012 11:42 PM

We’ll just play Rex against the Giants. They can’t stop him. He ate them for breakfast twice last year.

  47. TylerHills says: Mar 17, 2012 11:46 PM

I know everyone wants to hate Grossman because he always seems to make stupid mistakes. When he was the Bears he did fumble snaps and throw dumb picks but he was still young and wasn’t playing with elite targets. And overall he has played decent for Washington considering what little bit they have for talent on offense. The guys they do have on offense have a hard time staying healthy. I think a one year deal is good for Rex and the Redskins, should be a very solid backup to Grifin and should Griffin get hurt Rex can come in and play a couple games and not dismantle a season Hanie style.

  48. truthassassin says: Mar 17, 2012 11:59 PM

Good signing by the Skins, I was wondering if they would let him walk… not much use for another team, but, since he knows the system, he’ll be a good backup and can help RG3 learn the playbook

  49. Rex Grossman says: Mar 18, 2012 12:36 AM

Thanks for the kind words, everyone.

Although I find it a bit strange to draft a quarterback 2nd overall and pay him millions of dollars just to be my career backup. Maybe it is just a motivation tool by the coaches to play better? To… throw the ball even deeper?

    **** yeah. We’re going deep.

I understand that we’re a society of copy cats and unoriginal ideas but why do fans have to copy off the Raiders with the “Nation” bit? I know Steelers fans are the worst offenders but it’s not an good enough excuse to say everybody else is doing it. I as a Skins fan think we shouldn’t be allowed to say it at all until we’re at least a perennial playoff team. More so let the sheeple fans of teams like the Steelers and Pats mimic Raider Nation while we create something unique. That way we can proudly shove it into the faces of the Puke green, Gmen and Boys when RG3 works them in the up coming seasons!!!

  52. defscottyb says: Mar 18, 2012 6:40 AM

You know what, originally when I saw this article I was going to post something negative about Rex and his tiny baby hands or something but… I saw every game last year and a couple in person. Rex can be a very good qb half the time and a very bad one the other half. He had some pretty decect games last year, bringing us back vs cowboys at fed-ex (went to that one) gano makes that we win and a couple others (giants etc)… But, when he’s bad he’s bad and so frustrating to watch. Watched Bears/Colts SB on NFL network other day. Coach was telling Rex “don’t force anything and Rex throws 2 bad picks in the 4th qtr and lose SB. So, I’m 50/50 with Rex. He’ll be a more than capable backup and knows the system so as long as he signed fairly cheap it makes sense. Hail!

  53. tundey says: Mar 18, 2012 7:18 AM

It’s a great signing by the Skins. He knows the system and wouldn’t mind being the backup. The only other option is John Beck and I wouldn’t let that guy even be in the stands, much less be in uniform.

  54. breakmyrustycage213 says: Mar 18, 2012 9:45 AM

@lexnet… You must have been burned by your seagulls getting called that all last season. Problem is that your team anointed themselves the DREAM TEAM… your idiotic troll post holds no water here.

  55. tred11 says: Mar 18, 2012 11:41 AM

yeah, he can teach RG3 how to throw 5 picks in a game and choke in the playoffs, not that the foreskins will ever get there again…

  56. shalakka says: Mar 18, 2012 6:23 PM

Im done w/ rex. for someone that knows the system sooo well? statistically he was the 2nd worst QB in the league last year. a turnover machine. back-up or not, if he is a terrible starter, what is he as a back-up?
