Steve Young: Harbaugh threw with Peyton, probably will sign him

Jim Harbaugh AP

Randy Moss isn’t the only aging NFL star who had a personal workout with 49ers coach Jim Harbaugh this week.

According to former 49ers quarterback Steve Young, the team quietly worked out Peyton Manning this week, and Harbaugh — who was Manning’s predecessor as the Colts’ starting quarterback — got out on the field and did some throwing with Manning. Apparently Harbaugh liked Manning’s arm better than his own, because the 49ers emerged from that workout very interested in signing Manning. And Young said on SportsCenter that he believes the 49ers have handled everything exactly the right way, starting with G.M. Trent Baalke quietly laying the groundwork, and are now the favorites to secure Manning’s services.

“Trent Baalke laid low, he did the research, Jim Harbaugh threw with Peyton Manning,” Young said. “They didn’t get in the front pages. They know that they are the best answer for Peyton Manning. They know they have the best defense in the league to offer. They know they have the offensive weapons. They know they have Jim Harbaugh. They know all the pieces in place for Peyton Manning. It is the best opportunity for Peyton Manning. They knew it, and they waited for the wannabes to exhaust themselves, and then they came in right at the end, and that’s why I think they’ll probably land him at this point.”

Young said the 49ers’ presence in the NFC Championship Game last season makes them exactly the kind of team Manning wants to join: A team that’s already in contention and that can get over the top in 2012.

“I know Peyton Manning is looking for a team to join now and win a division now and go to the Super Bowl now,” Young said. “That’s the San Francisco 49ers.”

wow. that team will be unbelievable if they get him

  2. lilrob10201 says: Mar 17, 2012 12:15 PM

Peyton to 9ers will be dangerous. If Randy Moss still has gas in the tank and Manning gets his throwing ability back it will be like the Brady/Moss Duo.

Nah…..Peyton already told me he is picking Denver Steve..keep dreaming.

  4. badkarma56 says: Mar 17, 2012 12:16 PM

Yep Yep Yep, the niners kept it quiet from the world as the otehr teams let it become a circus. Come when a super for an NFC team Mr. Manning!

  5. hawkron says: Mar 17, 2012 12:16 PM

It makes the most sense. But if he goes to SF, the Hawks will be cellar dwellers for years… Especially with TJoke as the QB, which PC has said he is happy to stay with next year…. UUGghhhhhhh…….

  6. revanslightsaber says: Mar 17, 2012 12:16 PM

Steve Young is right, I don’t even know why Manning is even considering the Broncos/Titans

  7. bobbyyyd says: Mar 17, 2012 12:17 PM

Not taking anything away from the niners. They are a great team and organization. But why are so many people acting like Jim Harbaugh is the greatest NFL coach ever. He was in the league one year, before you crown him the all mighty one wait another season or 2. Keep in mind, pretty much that whole team was formed not by Harbaugh, but by Ex coaches

  8. green41563 says: Mar 17, 2012 12:17 PM

Luckily, there are some commentators who are more than just shills for their former teams.

  9. cannonballdookie says: Mar 17, 2012 12:20 PM

If it’s anything like what happened in the baseball offseason, the “mystery team” always wins.

  10. justafanofitall says: Mar 17, 2012 12:21 PM

But……………that would mean having to beat out his brother to go to the SB. From what you read that is why he favors the AFC.

  11. cali49er707 says: Mar 17, 2012 12:22 PM

he’s right wether you admit it or not. the 9ERS present the best opportunity for him to win a superbowl, now when it comes to favorites to land manning i dont know about that!! but, with manning the titans or broncos could maybe make it to a divisional playoff game but, chance at a superbowl its the 9ERS. at least out of these three teams!!!

  12. footballwizkid says: Mar 17, 2012 12:22 PM

If this happens it blows the whole, “The Mannings don’t want to get in each other’s way to the Super Bowl,” theory out of the water.

  13. oilers1974 says: Mar 17, 2012 12:22 PM

from a Titans fan; he would be an idiot not to go with the 9ers.

  14. handsofglue says: Mar 17, 2012 12:22 PM

Sign him on Monday morning please!! I want this to be over already… The 49ers are his best choice, everyone knows it so get it done!

  15. Nevis says: Mar 17, 2012 12:22 PM

This is pure speculation, albeit on point and makes sense.

Assuming Manning is serious about deciding Monday or Tuesday, I see no way he opts for SF without a visit.

Unless that has already happened or isn’t necessary.

All I know is, for Jim Harbaugh to go to Duke and work out Manning and get a physical without anyone knowing for 4 days — STRAIGHT NINJA.

  16. reed20ravens says: Mar 17, 2012 12:22 PM

ive always liked jim as a coach but this is a terrible thing to do to alex smith.

  17. 1phd says: Mar 17, 2012 12:23 PM

Yup, when Archie and Peyton and Condon weigh their options, the place that makes the most sense is indeed San Francisco and it’s also the best city of the three choices. Really, when you think about it, it’s a no brainer.

  18. PFTiswhatitis says: Mar 17, 2012 12:23 PM

He forgot one thing…MONEY…that’s what it is all about when it comes to Peyton Manning.

  19. atrophiedambitions says: Mar 17, 2012 12:24 PM

Manning to Vernon Davis is a scary combination. Gronkowski’s records may not hang around that long.

  20. TurdSandwich says: Mar 17, 2012 12:25 PM

Think Young has a wishful, biased opinion?
SF has squat for recievers, no pass protection, is in the NFC and is far from home.
SF’s projected ‘greatness’ is solely because of who they are ala The Jets and Giants.. They are no lock for a championship.

  21. joetoronto says: Mar 17, 2012 12:27 PM

But what about the Alex Smith, is signing Manning when Niner fans finally admit he stinks?

  22. prosourcetalk says: Mar 17, 2012 12:27 PM

  23. kingbeason52 says: Mar 17, 2012 12:27 PM

  24. duanethomas says: Mar 17, 2012 12:29 PM

How did the 49ers and Peyton keep their courtship and workout under wraps to you hounds who have tried to follow his every move for the last two weeks. I find it funny…..and to see you guys now scramble is funny. Steve Young the Niner insider had no idea this was happening, now he’s all over ESPN saying its going to happen. LOL.

  25. ratbastardshanahandjob says: Mar 17, 2012 12:29 PM

When P. Manning signs with SF. At least the Broncos have Saint Timmy Rah Rah to raise the dead after all the wrist slashing. Problem for Denver is they still need a real QB. Not a fullback trying to play QB…….

  26. jasoncnz says: Mar 17, 2012 12:29 PM

I dont buy it. Manning is so meticulous and detail oriented that there is no way he would sign with a team without getting to interview THEM and ask all his questions. No Visit means No Signing.

The niners just jumped in at the last minute in order to delay the process enough so they could make sure Arizona had to pull out and pay Kolb.

  27. peytonsneck18 says: Mar 17, 2012 12:29 PM

Epic fail, Peyton is damaged goods and 9ers don’t have enuff money to satisfy Peyton, if I was alex smith I would sign elsewhere, backup to Luck in Indy?

  28. kash71 says: Mar 17, 2012 12:29 PM

Only reason why I do not see Manning signing with the 49ers is because he does not want to be in the NFC with his brother. The 49ers are the best team for him on both sides of the ball. One win away from the Superbowl and replace Smith with Manning in the Championship game, its a whole different story.

This is coming from a Broncos Fan who would love to have him.

  29. meytonpanning says: Mar 17, 2012 12:30 PM

YES!! Fantastic news. I got so scared when I heard Wayne resigned with the Colts and Marshall left Miami, then had a mini heart attack when Whisenhunt paid K.Kolb. I just wanna see Manning get another ring and 49ers would make that a strong possibility! Even Manning-to-Crabtree would be epic enough to make me happy.

  30. lumpinyourthroat says: Mar 17, 2012 12:30 PM

We Welcome Manning (A little bitter sweet, cuz Alex is on the rise! If we had Moss.. hell GINN we would have won the NFC Champ and the SB!! Wasnt Alex fault! More Harb fault for that Blow out win where Morgan got hurt… And Edwards getting cut right before the playoffs… Only able to field 2 WR all game in the Champ game. that was terible… )

  33. reiriza says: Mar 17, 2012 12:32 PM

    Attn PFT Readers!

Peyton Manning will not be going to a team where he cannot control the offence. Harbaugh will not be giving anyone control of the niners playcalling.

The only remaining destinations that will give him complete control are Miami and Denver. Not Arizona, not Texas, and certainly not SF.

    I still think it’s Miami.

Yes, and those teams continually underachieved under those coaches. The 49ers had the talent to win that division for years, but Nolan and Singletary were incompetent buffoons. Not surprisingly, Harbaugh was actually able to get those players to use that talent in a way that enabled the team to, you know, win.

  48. barneyrumble says: Mar 17, 2012 12:42 PM

I have to agree with Steve Young, if Manning wants a ring, San Fran seems to be the place to go. If it is all about the money, then Denver, if it is about keeping the wife happy and moving home and or sticking it to Irsay and the Colts, it’s the Titans, and I think it’s about winning, so look for 18 to go to San Fransisco.

  49. buffbills916 says: Mar 17, 2012 12:43 PM

  50. joe3001 says: Mar 17, 2012 12:44 PM

Well – the fact that the 49ers are in on this will tell us everything we ever need to know about Peyton Manning.

All the talking heads on all the networks keep gushing about Peyton and how it’s not about the money and he wants a chance to win at least 1 more Super Bowl.

Well – here it is. His best chance is SF. Period.

If he goes anywhere else … so much for the “Peyton just wants to win” narrative . . .

  51. cotts1 says: Mar 17, 2012 12:45 PM

Peyton wont work in San Fran. He and Harbaugh will clash the whole time. Both are too stubborn to let their ego’s relax. It will be a disaster of epic proportion….btw Steve Young is the biggest 49ers slappy in the world….

  52. toolnutz says: Mar 17, 2012 12:45 PM

If the Niners sign both Manning and Alex Smith, this could be the first time two #1 pick QBs in the same team. Anyone has stat on this?

  53. watermelon1 says: Mar 17, 2012 12:46 PM

The 49ers have the best defense to offer? I think a few teams like the Ravens might have something to say about that.

But yes, the 49ers definitely have one of the easiest divisions for Peyton to come in and dominate.

I still say the Ravens are the best fit for him… gives him a great chance at playoffs while also avoiding his brother until the Super Bowl.

They’ve got plenty of playmakers on the offensive side of the ball, it’s just that they go unnoticed due to their current QB situation. But the Ravens will never admit to that, sadly.

I think we all can see who the smarter Harbaugh brother is! Good luck 49ers… not that you’ll need it if Peyton does choose correctly and sign with you.

The fact that he took a team that was 6-10 and made them 13-3 just proves he is a great coach. not to mention he made the free agents that were brought in or the rookie CB that was drafted play better than ever/great for a rookie… Not to mention he is about to bring Manning to the Bay!!! Harbaugh is the man!!

  55. dewman13 says: Mar 17, 2012 12:47 PM

I guess Ross was pretty smart going after Harbaugh last year! Went ballzout to get him, but he didn’t want to uproot his young family out of NorCal. If Jim pulls this off ,added with last years performance, the 9ers will be a force under him!! Best hire at coach in a loooong time.

So Manning can play for Brady’s childhood favorite team, with Brady’s record-breaking receiver– which happens to be the same team that Manning’s little brother knocked out of the playoffs one game before winning the Super Bowl that put him one title and one Super Bowl MVP ahead of Peyton.

And he can play for Andrew Luck’s college coach.

How can this get any better?

  59. bearsstillsuck says: Mar 17, 2012 12:49 PM

  62. sbxxix says: Mar 17, 2012 12:50 PM

The 49ers should have a good shot. If you think about it, I would imagine it would be a lot harder to lose your brother in a Super Bowl than it would be to lose in an NFC Championship, divisional playoff or wildcard game. Imagine how bad it would feel to see your brother in defeat with total negativity around him while you hold the Lombardi trophy with lights, cameras and confetti all over you. The sibling somparison would be too much if they were to face each other in the SB.

  63. djcrabby8 says: Mar 17, 2012 12:53 PM

I think it’s great. I hate Harbaugh, I hate Peyton Manning, I don’t like Randy Moss anymore and I hate the 49ers. It feels good to consolidate and be able to heap all of my hatred onto one team. And while they may become by far the most talented team in the NFC, they also have acquired a ton of fragile personalities. So, from me to 49 nation, I wish you a quick and devastating implosion.

  65. sweetzinger says: Mar 17, 2012 12:54 PM

Manning’s best option is Houston, not the 49ers. They have Johnson at wr and Jacoby Jones is better than any receiver Frisco has. Houston plays in the AFC and won’t have to compete against Green Bay, New Orleans, Philly, Detroit, and if you want, you can throw in Chicago, Atlanta, and any other NFC East team that wakes up.

Their defense is just as good and they have an easy path to the division title, and probably the Superbowl becasue of the weak AFC.

Signing Manning still does not address the issue. And the issue is still wr. It has been for years. Would you assume Moss still has something left? Didn’t play at all last year. And the year before: 28 receptions on 3 different teams and 0 td’s. He’s still a question mark.

Address the issue, and then sign Manning.

  66. mrplow3 says: Mar 17, 2012 12:55 PM

That’s alot of if’s. Not too smart for a borderline super bowl team who if not for one terrible special teams player could have won it all.

You break the bank on Peyton, he’s a bust or hurt again you go from super bowl contender, to rebuilder.

    Stupid gamble IMO.

Alex has shown flashes this year of what he can do. Ie. come from behind wins in Philly, Detroit, and N.O. at home in he playoffs. If he stays in SF I think he’s only going to get better.

I’d be happy to have Alex back in San Francisco. However, this is a chance to sign Peyton Freaking Manning. If you can, you have to do it.

Guys, if the two of them played better then they wouldn’t be getting their feeling hurt. I don’t see Brees, Brady or Rogers pouting. Its a business and a healthy Manning is way better than these two guys. Alex pretty much owes his revived career to Harbaugh so he can’t be too upset.

It seems like Peyton wants another SB ring without having to work for it. If that is his attitude, then maybe he should spend some of his millions on a ring from one of the retired NFL vets.

  80. nashvilletrojan says: Mar 17, 2012 1:17 PM

What is it about the Moss-Manning thing? Peyton always had guys that got YAC. Harrison, Wayne and Clark. Thats not Moss’s style. If Peyton has to throw deep for Moss, its not going to work. Moss and Crabtree arent a good fit for the quick dink and dunk.

  81. giantrealist says: Mar 17, 2012 1:19 PM

Peyton is great. But he had oodles of weapons on Offense and a great defense with Indy. That resulted in ONE Superbowl. So it isn’t a lock that SF is going to win one either.

But it will be fun to watch him lay into Mr Overrated Randy Moss when he begins complaining about not getting enough passes thrown his way.

Peyton is a real man. Randy’s still an child.

  82. allday38 says: Mar 17, 2012 1:20 PM

It’s funny to me that so many people(albiet mostly 49er fans), assume it’s so easy for SF to get right back to an NFC Championship game if Manning signs. This is the NFL people! It’s extremely hard to win in this league. SF, had everything go their way last season. Poor division(on the rise though), huge T/O differential, and realitivly great health. It’s not going to be so easy 2 season’s in a row. As for Moss, the guy hasn’t played in a year and, knows one route…straight!!!

  83. 9er4lyfe says: Mar 17, 2012 1:21 PM

Just heard on KNBR that Peyton and his agent were the ones who called the 49ers first. Thats what im talking about.

If the Niners sign both Manning and Alex Smith, this could be the first time two #1 pick QBs in the same team. Anyone has stat on this?

nope already been done. Ironically enough in San Francisco when David Carr was Smith’s backup 2010

IHope all you 9ers fans think that they’ll be super bowl champs next year because they signed moss and manning cause reality wil hurt when it slaps you in the face!all it will take is a blindside hit by a rushing linebacker to take peyton out,and when that happens, randy moss will lose interest like he has every where else, and start taking plays off!

  88. sixburghrules says: Mar 17, 2012 1:34 PM

Maybe he wants in the AFC so he has a chance at playing little brother in the SB. THAT would be a record NEVER to be shattered!

  89. jeziyo247 says: Mar 17, 2012 1:36 PM

Some of you have good views, why would Peyton visit all but the niners facility? Everybody is so hype about manning joining the niners, their not thinking straight. The colts was so bad without Peyton, im surprise he took them to two superbowl so if he joins a team who puts in half the effort the colts did last season, he can make that team much better. The niners can win the superbowl without Peyton, I think its messed up how their treating smith like it was his fault they didn’t make it. I’ve stayed in the bay for 20 years and theres nothing but trouble and crime out there so don’t say that SF is a better city. That’s probably why the meeting was a secret because the niner fans are far worser than Miami fans. Manning will sign with the broncos because they have the weaker division and he only have to get thru brady. Plus denver can offer the most money guaranteed.

  90. randybutternubs79 says: Mar 17, 2012 1:37 PM

I go back to what Adam Schefter said when he announced it on ESPN. PM has not visited the 9ers facility. He still might, but until then they have to be considered the long shot of the 3 remaining teams. If he visits then they should be considered the favorites to sign him.

  91. zonedogz says: Mar 17, 2012 1:38 PM

    Lifetime contract > 9er’s
Peyton will go back to his college roots and stay in AFC
and play for Tennessee which has an easier schedule and can avoid playing against Eli until the greatest Super Bowl of all-time : Manning vs Manning.

  92. blackfootkiller says: Mar 17, 2012 1:40 PM

A lot of big headed Niner’s fans acting like they already won next years Super Bowl.
It would be great to watch all of those big egos screaming at each other on the sidelines though.

  93. makeshersquirt says: Mar 17, 2012 2:02 PM

49ers can’t pay him what Denver and Tennessee can, that’s a fact.
Tennessee can pay him but then cannot afford to get him any more toys to play with.
Denver can pay him whatever he wants and pick up some toys.

Oh, and in SF…he has to deal with Randy Moss.
I doubt Peyton wants Tom Brady’s sloppy seconds.

  94. garity says: Mar 17, 2012 2:03 PM

I love this! How much of a dolt will Elway look like after promising Tebow the starting job in camp, exposing that promise as a lie when he started chasing Peyton, and (if this 9er’s thing happens) has to go back to Denver and say “Hhhaaaaayyyyyy, I was just kiiiidiing”. [Use Mr. Ed voice here]. You would think that a former QB would have a better handle on the emotional whiplash that will put on his fanatic fans… but, apparently, he’s clueless.

Reasons P.M. might not be going West Coast /NFC.
#1 :aaa It’s the west coast . Peyton is E.C. swamp boy.
    #2 :Niner O line is o.k…see Alex run !
#3:The entire P.M. /Colts offense is not what the niners run. No way will the 9ers hand over the offense to P.M.
#4: Harbaugh : I love coach ,the reason the niners have been so bad for so long = horrible pathetic coaches & coaching that were more concerned if they could wear a suit on the sideline etc.. but Harbaugh= the Genghis Khan of head coaches will not sit still for P.M. running every thing on the O.
    # 5: $$$, one more time, $$$ . Niners can’t match the other 2 ? teams, yeah ,who knows ?there could be several more in the wood pile.

I would feel so bad for Alex if that happens… He’s done everything right, had a career year, makes it to the championship game, and gets canned. Poor guy… Maybe he can sign a 5 year deal as well, be Manning’s backup, and we can have both. Colin can be #3.

I am a Bay Area resident, a staunch conservative and I would welcome the man here. There are a lot of us here and we despise Ms. Pelosi and her ilk more than you could ever know for what has happened to our once great state.

The team was formed by other coaches but those other coaches never had a .500 season let alone 13-3 and a muffed punt or 2 from the super bowl

Jim Harbough took a less then mediocre team and turned them into a Super Bowl boud team in 1 season with very practically no offseason, no ota’s. He turned Alex Smith into a effcient passer something 2 previous HC’s and 7 OC’s couldnt do with a full offseason let alone less then half!

I think Harbough deserves all the credit he gets and then some, to do what he did in the amount of time he did it in remarkable and completely unheard of!.

I love it when right-wing nuts such as you lose your boner just mentioning Nancy Pelosi.

Sticking to the topic at hand, as a 32-year Niner season ticket holder I say sign Manning. Gore is getting older/injury prone so Harbaugh has to either get another to top-tier back or transition to more of a passing game. Hence, Fleener as the Niners’ 1st pick.

The above post fails on so many levels. I think the sky is a beautiful orange plaid and that fish drive BMW’s. Unfortunately the facts don’t support my theories much like they don’t support yours. I live in Missouri too yet I don’t blurt out things that are factually bankrupt with a straight face. What gives?

No matter what conference Peyton plays in, the potential is there that he’ll have to beat his brother Eli either in a play off game or in the Superbowl to WIN a Superbowl. This theory is so idiotic. Like these guys can just pick and chose when they go to the SB as though it’s that easy.

At first when I looked at the situation with Alex I felt bad for him but then when I looked a little closer at the whole 49ers -Alex Smith history my feelings changed! 1. Alex did not just get on our team 2 or 3 years ago ,he’s been there for 7YEARS!!! So for 7 years all the money and time we have invested in him says alot about our loyalty to him as well as his to us. 2. This past season is the first season he has ever given us anywhere close to what we thought we would have in a quarterback when we took HIM #1 in the 2005 Draft! 3. The 49ers organization as a whole have done nothing but support this guy for years! Alex Smith has had what IMO is a fair contract from this organization for months now and not signed it , leaving the 49ers in limbo when he should have jumped at the chance to sign any deal presented because if he was willing to take a 1year deal last year for 5million how is a 3year /8million a year deal an insult to him. 4. If he had signed the deal along time ago then He would not be in this situation at all!!! PLUS if he were to sign the deal and then go out and Win a Super Bowl or 2 with this powerful team why would they ever make a change at QB! At the end of the Deal we offered him He’d only be 30yrs old and still be able to get that MEGA Million dollar deal and years that he wants!!! So when I really think about it I don’t feel JH or Baalke or his agent did Alex wrong! I think Alex did Alex Wrong!!!!
