Too many post about QB situation but little on the big picture.

I think the 49ers are interested with Peyton Manning from the start but do not want to make it known publicly because they are afraid to piss off Alex Smith if PM says not interested. So they offered a deal to Alex Smith in good faith just in case.

Now that PM have shown interest, they are not afraid to piss off Alex Smith. They can do that now because I believe, the other teams PM are interested in are maybe 2-3 years away from being a superbowl quality team. 49ers are just a few minor tuning away from winning a 2nd SB ring for PM to be not upstaged by Eli's 2 rings.

But there is more to this. the 49ers and NYG are in the same conference, both teams potentially can meet twice in a season, what a media hype this will be, brother matchup game anytime both teams play, specially if this happens to be an NFC championship.

Now, let's say 49ers go to superbowl, play againsts New England with Tom Brady at QB, 49ers win. You know how much bigger media hype this will be, talk about PM legacy, etc., etc., about Football history record books that will probably stay unbreakable for many years to come. Only QB beat by brothers, or better yet, only QB beat by brothers on consecutive Superbowls.

It could also be the other way around, Brady's revenge for loosing to Eli twice.

Watching both Mannings play, there is some mention of their father, Archie Manning's football history, I think PM wants to have his own history and NFL legacy that being cut by Indy, after what he brought to the team is not the one. The superbowl win scenario above is better.

I think Peyton Manning will be a 49er.

David Garrard is coming to dinner, in Miami. This just keeps getting weirder and weirder by the minute. Ireland/Ross were willing to pay Manning, an old, injured QB, 25 mil a yr, but wont pay Flynn, a yound, non injured, good QB 8 mil. Now Alex Smith is on the board for 8 mil a yr. Smith is young, non injured, good QB of some fame. Will Ireland/Ross sign him, I dought it. I dont think theres on brain cell amoung the two Ireland/Ross. Tomorrow Ill read where Philpin as noticed that hes made a terrible mistake by taking the HC job in Dolphinland and is walking back to Green Bay as the new ball boy.
Ive been a Dolphin fan since 1966, but today is my last day. Im tired of reading the dailey Dolphin bad news report.

There is a long list of high profile deals that the Dolphins have screwed up; Flynn may or may not be the last in this continuing saga. His Green Bay coach didn't think that he was worth the money Seattle shelled out. We will see.

Alex Smith is worth more than Matt Flynn when you dismiss potential. Smith has been a starter for years and has earned his reputation. He only has one season where he lived up to his potential but Harbough was the his first good coach. Is Philbin good enough of a coach to keep Smith on tract? Will Dolphins management get the players needed to compliment Smith?

Free agency hasn't been exciting in Miami. We resigned out nose tackle but lost a good DE to the Rams and a RT prospect (Eric Winston) to KC. Oh, I almost forgot, we picked up a back up CB and a guard who are supposed to compete with the bottom feeders on the Dolphins roster. Very exciting!

Matt Moore had a good QB rating for a guy stuck on a bad team. We still need a top tier WR, RT, & TE to compliment whomever the QB is. On defense, we need a DB, either a CB or a safety, because Sean Smith can play either position. We would probably like to have a top Left OLB or DE to supercharge the pass rush. Without that big name WR, I am not sure that Alex Smith is going to make a difference. We probably should have worked a little harder getting that RT.

I feel another 8-8 season coming on with an overpaid QB and a rookie RT and no big name WR. I guess I can always look at the Red Carpet and be proud. Hey Alex! Did they tell you about the Red Carpet?

If Alex wasn't that good then why would SF put a contract in front of him paying him that much money? $8m for a backup role. Alex Smith for the length of his career has had terrible offensive coaching and game planning. He has all the talent to be very good if given the right coaching. Joe Philbin and Mike Sherman KNOW quaterbacks. Losing out on Matt Flynn is not a bad thing. Joe Philbin knows more about Matt Flynn's talents than anyone, including the sports writers. There was a reason why we let him leave. AND yes,the dolphins didn't want him, not the other way around. Flynn's was money hungry and was chasing money instead of proving himself first. If he had confidence in himself, he would have signed an incentive aden contract first, with a coach who worked with you for 4 years. Instead he opted for guarunteed money which to me is a red flag he is just covering his behind in the event he sucks...

Looking forward to when PM decides where he is going - SF is my bet.
However, it's amazing the lack of patience that we fans are showing - after all - we are only fans.

Not many of us have likely been in a position that several organizations are negotiating for our services - is it so wrong that a person takes time and makes sure that they are making the RIGHT decision?
If you were in the same situation - what would YOU do? Odds are that we would also do the same - except - we wouldn't have fans crying about it.

PM deserves the opportunity to evaluate where he ends up - and - if that means a team PAYS out the rear to get him as well - so be it. It is a business - it is his profession - and you would do the same.

With all that said - if he signs with SF as I think he will - with all the other moves they have made - the rest of the NFL will need to look out.

For those that say it's a risk because of his neck and such - the NFL is a multi-billion dollar business - with great risk can come great reward (or disastrous failure - it happens!).

Regardless where Alex ends up - wish him well. He has been stand up and been through a lot - given consistency in coaching and system, I think he could be a pretty good, and maybe VERY good QB.

For myself - been a Tampa Bay fan for many years...and...well...guess the bright spot is that TB HAS been worse.....?

Don’t forget that Alex and Peyton are both represented by Tom Condon. Why is it all of a sudden that Alex is looking for work elsewhere… It only makes sense that maybe his agent knows Peyton is going to SF and he wants his other client to have a job as well.
_____________________________________
I highly doubt it. Peyton is handling communications with the teams he's still considering himself. Condon will be called in basically to hammer out the contract once Peyton has made a decision. So, it's very possible Condon doesn't even know where Peyton is going yet. Second, even if Condon did know that Peyton was going to SF, why would he risk losing Peyton as a client and burning bridges with the 49ers front office by betraying their trust...just to help Smith. Peyton is a much more valuable client than Smith ever will be. finally, if a decision has already been reached, then the 49ers would be leaking the news to everyone that would keep their specific names out of it. News of the signing would lead to large increases in ticket and merchandise sales.

As to why Smith is suddenly considering other options, the public knowledge that the 49ers are a serious candidate to land Manning is a fairly new thing. Smith had an offer from the 49ers already, but that's now in limbo while the 49ers wait to see if they can get Peyton. If I'm Smith, then I realize I'm in the situation I'm in because I waited too long to act before, and I'm not simply waiting to see if Peyton is coming to take my job. If he does that, the Dolphins could sign another QB while he was just sitting around. So, he could end up losing both his starting job in SF and the chance to be a starter in Miami. Other than those two teams, I haven't really noticed any others with an interest in Smith as a starter.

What pieces of the puzzle besides SF having talent?
__________________________
I think the poster was implying that since Smith and Peyton have the same agent (Condon) that Smith negotiating with another team means he was given a heads-up to find another gig real fast. Personally, I think that's a bit of a reach. Peyton may end up in SF, but I don't think what Smith is doing gives us proof of anything. To begin with, Peyton has been speaking directly with the teams still in the running, and he claims he hasn't made a final decision yet. In other words, whether Peyton has or hasn't made a decision yet, there's reason to believe that Condon at least doesn't yet know where Peyton will play. If Condon doesn't know, there goes any inside source Smith would have. Secondly, Smith had a contract offer from the 49ers that's now kind of in limbo as they wait to see what Peyton will decide. Had Smith signed the contract earlier, he wouldn't be in this situation. Instead, he waited, and now he could lose his job in SF to Peyton. So, this could be nothing other than Smith having learned his lesson about waiting to long to make a decision. Exactly how many teams are beating down Smith's door? Not many. If Smith waits to see what Peyton will do, he could end up losing his job to Peyton and finding out that the Dolphins filled the starting job already. If that happens, his odds of getting a starting job in the league will be rather bleak.

Super funny...you guys are all predicting doomsday scenarios for the 9ers; any of you reading that Alex doesn't want to sign the Miami deal before seeing what Peyton does?

Alex brought this on himself. He could have signed the 9ers deal. He didn't and Peyton called the 9ers, told them to come watch him throw. That means Peyton wants to be a 9er and the only thing that must be holding him back is the money. I know the 9ers offer is the lowest.

Alex wants to wait, he just put himself in a bad spot now and needs Peyton to go for the cash. Alex wants him to be Bud Adams' Anna Nicole Smith. You want more rings Peyton or a couple extra millions? Tick, tick, tick...

In my humble opinion, Alex Smith's value should be higher to the 49ers than any other team. Yeah the guy has never set the world on fire with numbers---but he pretty much Harbaugh's system to a "T" as in throw 10-15 times and hand off to Gore. Oh yeah and don't turn the football over. The 49ers have drug their feet on this so here's hoping their gamble pays off and they get Manning if not Trent Balke and Harbaugh have some splainin' to do!

some of the niners fans need to realize their team isnt as good as they think they are. SF was a product of lucky scheduling. all their toughest opponents they played at home last year. cowboys at home, played eagles early in the year when they were terrible, giants at home (twice), steelers a week after roethlisbergers injury (if you dont think that made a difference youre an ignorant fool), also not to metion being in the worst division in all the NFL. dont get me wrong they are a solid team and harbaugh is obviously a big time coach but a top 5 team? absolutely not. they wont get the lucky scheduling next year, niners had one tough opponent on the road, ravens. next year they have the bears, saints, jets, patriots on the road . without manning 8-8, with a healthy manning 10-6
________________________________

Bunk. 9ers beat Bengals and Lions (2 playoff teams) on the road. Ravens was a Thursday game after a cross country flight. Only put on the schedule for a thanksgiving harbowl. Tomlin should have done his job and pulled Roethlisberger, can't hold that against the niners. AFC west is the worst division in football, I don't know why people can't see that. Niners deserved to be 13-3. I agree the niner bandwagon is going full speed but to say that they're overrated is just as delusional as saying Manning is an instant ring.

Actually, he is reuniting with Reggie Bush!!!

They played high school football together and are trying to repeat the success they had there.

Helix HS in San Diego is going to be home to three Dolphins: Ricky Williams, Reggie Bush, and now Alex Smith.

We have to now see if Smith will be the third Helix alum to have success in South Beach!!!

The coaching staff should have open arms for him, make him feel comfortable, structure the offense to his strengths, and embrace like he deserves to be a part of the team.

Any form of welcome can help a guy that might be feeling or is truly being put down!!!

I know this is going to sound foolish but the problem with the fins in this off season is they won too many games last season. The result is they are not high enough in the draft to get a possible impact quarterback. Both Peyton Manning, Alex Smith and Matt Flynn are significant risks, Peyton is probably now injury prone, Alex Smith could be a one year wonder and Matt Flynn could be a two game wonder.
If the Dolphins were higher in the draft they would have more flexibility in selecting a quarterback. Negotiating with the agents of Peyton, Smith and Flynn, the Dolphins are in a extreme disadvantage for in the current circumstances the agents know the phins are desperate for a quarterback so agents are asking top dollar for their clients which in turn the agents use to drive up the market price for other clubs. If the Dolphins were higher in the draft they would have more options open to them and agents would be forced to deal on a more level playing field.

overhyped by the media? I do believe they were predicted by just about everyone to be last in their division. Every week was a game to prove how good they were. They were a very disrespected team last year in my opinion. They went 14 and 4 with a bad offense. Yes they will have a tougher schedule. Could that be the reason they are going after Manning?

overhyped by the media? I do believe they were predicted by just about everyone to be last in their division. Every week was a game to prove how good they were. They were a very disrespected team last year in my opinion. They went 14 and 4 with a bad offense. Yes they will have a tougher schedule. Could that be the reason they are going after Manning?

This QB carousel really could end up hitting the 49ers hard…

Flynn to Seahawks.
Smith to Dolphins.
Manning to Broncos.
Leaving what, Tebow or Garrard for the 49ers…?

… They would be better off calling in Favre at that point.--------

Why would Denver get rid of Tebow if Manning signed? Best goal line offense out there and if Manning got hurt it would be an easy offense to run once again.
