Wow! I couldn't help but offer my 2 cents here. There are alot of good posts here and alot of BS. Right now I think the BS award is going to golonger. Man you are truly an idiot. You must blog to see yourself think. That said, it's hard to believe there is a market for Alex Smith. He is painful to watch. Yes, maybe his psyche was destroyed his first few years but all of those different OC's didn't teach him how to throw the football all over the place, but usually into the ground, under pressure. Come on, GOOD QB's make things happen on third down. Period. Now check his 3rd down stats from the Giant game. For those of you who think Alice is getting jobbed, you must have forgotten how this franchise tore out our hearts when they traded Joe. Good buy Alex, you should have taken the offer, but I'm glad you didn't. You ain't worth 8 mil let alone 10 or 12.

Oh and Matt Moore has proven to be a more capable QB than Smith so why would MIA feel the need to pay Smith more than what the market has already set for him? Well, Ireland is making these decisions so I guess it's possible but unlikely IMO.

Alex Smith is totally getting done dirty by his agent and the 49ers, but a good part of that is the fault of his naivete. He has been a deer in headlights this entire offseason. He assumed the 49ers would be 100% committed to him because of his experience last year during the lockout, but this time it is totally different. The 49ers have options (Manning) and a real offseason to deal with them.

He was naive and trusted the 49ers would for sure take him back and his agent would represent him honestly. Instead, both have been pushing Peyton to sign, dangling Smith in the process. Add in a PR spin to make it look like Smith wasn't happy with the money offered and Smith becomes a major loser here. The 49ers are a different team now - they've got a dangerously savvy front office that almost operates in a shady, deviant manner like the Patriots. If they signed Peyton outright, it would look like they betrayed Alex, but now it looks like Alex was money-grubbing and an attempt to sign Peyton doesn't look so bad.

Alex should have been visiting other teams as soon as FA started, instead of sitting on his hands listening to his liar agent and assuming the 49ers were a lock. He got screwed because he let it happen.

Why would the Niners offer Smith a contract when they are negotiating with Peyton? I doubt if there was a contract for Smith to sign. With that said, they better be careful of the double whammy: both Manning and Smith signing with someone else . . . then Colin Kaepernick better be ready.

What's not being said here is that Smith originally wanted a 7 yr / $90 mil deal (over $12.5 p/yr) and when he got the 3/$24 he balked. He wanted a long term commitment and he got a 3 yr offer so he had Condon go back to negotiate something in between. The 49ers didn't want to pay any more and they have that right since Smith had only proven to be a good game manager. Had he taken the $8 mil p/yr deal originally offered and played another season to prove he was worth the $12.5 he wanted and showed even the slightest improvement, the 49ers would have ante'd up for a longer term deal. The fact that he didn't take the deal is on him, not Harbaugh, not Condon.

Also, MIA has already said that they won't even offer him the 3/$24 deal the 49ers did... Does anyone think there's going to be a bidding war for Alex Smith while Flynn's still avail? If the 49ers don't land Manning, Smith will sign back with the 49ers, play out a 1 yr $8 mil contract for the chance at the money he believes he's worth but that's IF they don't land Manning. Bank on it.

Your Giants are a joke. Really, they went 9-7 in a pathetic NFC East. Might have beaten Atlanta, but the Packers beat themselves, and the 49ers Special Teams cost them 10 points. And they barely beat a woeful Patriots team with a qb that made 3 major mistakes. A Patriots team that beat one team with winning record all year. And that team, Baltimore, beat themselves.
But that's how the Giants win, even going back to the Parcells days. Play mistake free football and hope the other team beats themselves (Roger Craig fumble, Scott Norwood missd FG).

Didn't Belichek and Coughlin coach under Parcells???

It wouldn't surprise me if the Giants went another 4 years of not winning a playoff game (and 3 of those years not even making the playoffs again).

I hope this Manning situation finally proves to everyone what I have said for years…Manning is the most selfish, arrogant, individualistic athlete there is and he certainly is NO role model for anyone…if you think otherwise you are either naive or clueless or both!

I think otherwise, and I'm not naive or clueless. However, given that clueless and naive mean very similar things, either term may fit you. Secondly, trying to preempt someone's argument by claiming anyone who disagrees is "clueless/naive" (or what have you) shows you to be incapable of defending you own positions.

Speaking of your statement: You are entitled to your opinion. However, I have a right to point out your comment is based on nothing but your own personal observations made from afar. You have no real reason to believe what you do about Manning. You certainly don't get to attack others who disagree with your completely baseless comments.

Harbaugh is a QB guru, and traded up in the 2nd round to get Colin Kaepernick. he can easily be the SERVICEABLE QB that Alex Smith was last year. furthermore, if Peyton signs with Ten. and Smith signs somewhere else then it's pretty obvious that the niners would sign Hasselback. they almost signed him last year to compete with Smith, he has the same agent as Harbaugh and GM Trent Baalke, and he would be going to a very talented team.

His receivers rarely get open.

Smith starts making bad throws because he starts to panic. He panics because the game plan isn't working. And there hasn't been much of a game plan for the 49ers for the last 6 of 7 years. And now I'm wondering about the current plan.

The circus was suppose to be over when Singletary was ousted. What is this going to do to the locker room? Everyone will be looking over their shoulder now.

The only reason that Smith has spent his entire career with the SF 49ers is because they wasted the #1 overall pick on him and didnt want to be proved wrong that he sucks. so they kept him hoping that some day he's have one good season. now he did, and now you can get rid of him. its like a gambler who's always losing or in the hole. as soon as you get ahead for once, then its time fold'em and walk away. they should listen to kenny rogers lol

It's just dawned on me that if SF doesn't land Peyton, they're actually pretty screwed. Alex's performance last year seemed to be built on trust, and even if there's a "whoopsie" from SF and they bring him back, it's not going to be the foundation it was last year. The relationship and the team will be damaged. Alex might be wise to opt for a fresh start regardless.

Keep also in mind it wasn't Alex who said "no" to that SF offer so much as his agent Tom "Poison Pill" Condon. And that "no" helped cleared the way to a more lucrative potential deal with Condon's other client, Peyton Manning.

Loser? Alex Smith. Potentially the 49ers.

Winner? Tom "Poison Pill" Condon.

If you blame Smith for what was the last 6 years out of 7 in San Francisco, then you don't have a clue about football.

Mike Nolan couldn't figure out when to throw the challenge flag and Mike Singletary didn't understand how to call a timeout.

Harbaugh won emphatically with the same personnel.

Where would Smith be if the 49ers had hired the right Mike? As in Mike McCarthy.

Every one talks about the OC's. 17 different starting receivers (Brandon Lloyd, Arnaz Battle, Johnnie Morton, Kevin McAddley, Antonio Bryant, Bryan Gilmore, Darrell Jackson, Ashley Lelie, Isaac Bruce, Bryant Johnson, Jason Hill, Josh Morgan, Michael Crabtree, Braylon Edwards, Ted Ginn, Kyle Williams, and Brett Swain). Look at these guys. Most of them were on the downside of the downside of their careers. And most of them never had an upside. And now Moss???? Manningham????

I don't think even Manning would have done much better.

Address the issue. And the issue is WR.

I hope this Manning situation finally proves to everyone what I have said for years…Manning is the most selfish, arrogant, individualistic athlete there is and he certainly is NO role model for anyone…if you think otherwise you are either naive or clueless or both!
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
This is, hands down, my favorite post. The Manning Situation does not exist. Just a 4x NFL MVP and first ballot HOF that was recently released and became a free agent. The fact that anyone can label Peyton's actions as selfish only illustrates a level of hate, jealousy and ignorance that is off the charts.

It is tough to see this all play out, but can you really pass on one of the greatest free agents? It's a high risk And high reward situation but whether you are or are not a niner fan, it should be known that this move is more about winning now and for years to come rather than the that smith is inept or at fault. True, he's "stuck around" all these years, but what role did the Niners play in that process? He's had more than enough chances to prove himself, last year was a good step forward for him , but is that enough to dismount an attempt at manning? He played well but it was conditional, and alot can be said that he was a few ST plays away from the big game, but he did in fact have the game in his hands for a drive or two prior to the muff. Kaepernick was not drafted to be a future trade piece, he was drafted in the midst of the Alex smith project and ultimately, is viewed as their future- Another reason why manning would be further pursued.

The finger can be pointed all you want at harbaugh, but one must remember what organization is being talked about: That winning tradition will ultimately play a role in any and every decision, to be restored and instilled. Smitty said it himself, he can't be surprised anymore because who really would hve thought peyton ever would have been available. He wins The super bowl, none of this goes on. BUT, close but no cigar. Time to see what did and potentially will go wrong and go from there. Whether it be manning smitty Flynn whoever, they will be stepping into an at least above average offensive situation, better than that of any of the other members of this final three has to offer, and if both 11 and 18 do not end up in SF, the Niners have played their cards right, to the point where they can go after hass (if he goes to Tennessee) or make a run at Flynn (though it is likely in that case they bring smitty back since he is still the lowest rated amongst all the involved floating QBs.).

Whatever it is, make it happen 9ers, somebody. We're already amongst the Sweet 16 how the hell did that happen?! Lol
