Matt Leinart could back up Carson Palmer in Oakland

AP

The Oakland Raiders may be in the market for a Heisman Trophy-winning USC quarterback to back up their starter, another Heisman Trophy-winning USC quarterback.

Matt Leinart, who was cut by the Texans last week, is a likely target for the Raiders as they look for a backup to Carson Palmer, Bill Williamson of ESPN.com reports.

The Raiders aren’t expected to re-sign free agent Kyle Boller, and Jason Campbell has already signed with the Bears, so Oakland needs a backup to Palmer. Terrelle Pryor is on the roster, but he’s more suited to spot duty as a change of pace who can threaten teams with his arm and his feet than he is as a backup who could run the offense if Palmer went down.

Leinart is a pocket passer from the same mold as Palmer, so in that respect he makes sense as a backup to Palmer, although Leinart has been a disappointment in the NFL. It’s also noteworthy that in the days since the Texans released Leinart, there have been no reports linking Leinart to the Seahawks and his old college coach Pete Carroll. Carroll knows Leinart as well as any NFL coach, and the Seahawks are in the quarterback market, so if Carroll is not interested, that’s not a great sign.

Still, the Raiders will sign someone to back Palmer up. Leinart may be the best bet.

  1. King Checkdown. He should not have a job in the NFL. The Raiders still have speed at WR and will want to go downfield. Not with that guy.

  2. Al always enjoyed making the Raiders the USC Football graduate institution.

    Leinart? Meh.

  3. I think Matt and Brady Quinn are two guys who could be great if ever given an actual chance to play a full year. Neither have ever been fully committed to and a mix of bad timing and regime changes have effected their careers. Wish them both well in their new back up roles….

  4. Totally agree. If Pete isn’t bringing him in for a look, there is something wrong. I hope this story is filler and Big Reg looks elsewhere for the #2 QB. The chargers got rid of billy volek, I would be much more comfortable with that. The bottom line is, once Peyton signs, most of the other dominos will fall quickly after.

  5. I can safely say this: Better than Boller.

Then again, if the Raiders signed Jeff George tomorrow, I’d say the same thing.

Then again, if the Raiders signed Ken Stabler tomorrow, I’d say the same thing.

Seeing a trend? If your name doesn’t rhyme with “ShmaMarcus Shmussell,” you’re probably better than Boller.

Not really. Seattle just signed Flynn.

  7. Id be comfortable with Leinart as a cheap backup, 2 year deal even. He knows the offense, and I personally think he still has a minor chance to be something, the guy found himself in some weird regimes at the wrong times.

  8. ……we’re talking about a team that actually had Colt Brennan in camp 2 years ago. Yes, that Colt Brennan who cried and quit in the Sugar Bowl versus GA in 08. The same Colt that washed out of the NFL and UFL and is now a backup in the Lingerie Football League.

…..so it doesn’t surprise me the Raiders are interested in Leinart.

So it really doesn’t say the Raiders have any interest, or that they scheduled a meeting… just that they could?

This what I got out of this. Oakland hasn’t expressed any interest at all. This is just speculation by the author, and it’s hilarious seeing some on his site buying into this as if it’s actually factual at all. The authors speculation, ala throwing poop at the wall and seeing what sticks, just blew right over their heads.

  10. Leinart is one of the top backup QBs around.

That’s a simple and true statement.

Is he good? No (though he was excellent in his limited time last season).

Is he better than most backup QBs? Caleb Hanie, Tyrod Taylor, Chase Daniels, Bruce Gradkowski, Charlie Batch, Jon Beck, Charlie Whitehurst, Curtis Painter, Jimmy Clausen…

    Yep.

  11. Raiders. That’s almost as bad as going to Washington. Guess we’ve about heard the last of him.

  12. Not happy about that sign “IF” Its true. I dont think that would be a move in the right direction if Caroll aint even looking. But hey, if it means Boller?????? Throw a 1 yr deal and see if it sticks! Like the writing on the wall if they dont look for a real back up arm. But then again didnt DMF make a couple good throws last year on a few trick plays?? Lets take a look?….My hell!!!!!!!!!!

  13. Being drafted by Arizona certainly didn’t help Leinart’s transition into the NFL. He’s not an awful QB, but he needs to find a coach who can light a fire under his arse and help him get over the fear of the rushing stampede of the defense.

Checkdowns and all, he’s still a serviceable ‘back. No harm done if the Raiders give him a year-long contract.
