In that same time frame your Bills have had 1 winning season and no playoff appearances. Yes, you did make a splash in FA however, I think it’s a stretch to say you’ll win the AFC East but lets say you do and make the playoffs and let’s pretend you’ll make the SB. Either way, before discussing this, we all need to understand that there are basically two kinds of FAs. The first is thrilled to get an offer, as it means that they won’t have to bust their behinds trying to make a team. The other FAs are those who are being targeted by multiple teams. Any team can get as many of the first group of FAs as they want, if for no other reason than there are more players than there are roster spots. The second group of FAs is where Clark’s comments come into play. These FAs have options, and are free to sign with whatever team presents the best option for them. When Clark says that no one wants to play for the Dolphins, what he’s really saying is that the Dolphins are considered a less-than-ideal franchise to play for. A team can be considered a less than ideal franchise for any number of reasons, ranging from the quality of the team’s roster to the way the front office acts. Having said that, they still have a chance at most of the second group of FAs. The problem is, if a team has a bad reputation, they have to be willing to noticeably outbid the other interested teams. Think of it as a bad rep tax. Finally, there’s an upper echelon of the second group of FAs. This consists of players who have already made a ton of money, and will simply refuse to play for a team they view as less than ideal. So, to sum things up, is it true that no one wants to play for the Dolphins? No, but it is true that the higher tier FAs are a lot harder for a team like the Dolphins to sign, and if they do manage to sign them they’re going to have to pay more to get them.
