Alex Smith, Dolphins have had more contract talks today

Alex Smith Pic Getty Images

Both SI.com’s Peter King and Armando Salguero of the Miami Herald are reporting that free agent quarterback Alex Smith has been in contract negotiations with the Dolphins on Monday.

King heard that Smith is “very serious” about the possibility of playing for the Dolphins. Per Salguero, Smith has told folks he’d strongly consider joining the Fins “under the right circumstances.”

In other words, on the grounds that the Dolphins fulfill Smith’s contract demands.

On Sunday night, Mike Klis of the Denver Post reported that the Dolphins had already begun monetary talks with Smith, and a deal could enter the $8 million-per-season range on a multi-year contract.

Smith initially had a three-year, $24 million deal on the table with the 49ers. Whether that remains the case is unknown, but it’s pretty clear Miami is willing to meet the annual average originally proposed by San Francisco. And after whiffing on Peyton Manning and Matt Flynn, the quarterback-needy Dolphins are taking an aggressive approach.

It is not the average which matters but the actual guaranteed money. Matt Flynn’s average is better than 3 years, $24mil but the guaranteed money is only(well only in NFL QB terms) $10mil.

Wow…if Alex Smith is the answer for the Dolphins, they need to start asking different questions.

I think we have seen Alex Smith’s best year, and it was not all that impressive.

  7. cured76 says: Mar 19, 2012 3:54 PM

$8M per is a lot to offer that dude. I’m happy for Smith because he’s kept quiet and worked hard just to be a cast-off. But I have to wonder if they couldn’t do better or at least address that position in the draft.

  8. thankheavenfornumberseven says: Mar 19, 2012 3:55 PM

Manning and Smith have the same agent. Could the agent have asked Manning to feign interest in San Francisco and then dump them so they would be forced to give a bigger contract to Smith?

  9. bucrightoff says: Mar 19, 2012 3:55 PM

I think he is using my Phins as leverage, but better than reading Tebow to Miami articles…Please don’t kill me Tebow lovers, he is a great HUMAN, but not a West Coast Offense QB.

  17. holeinone09 says: Mar 19, 2012 3:58 PM

Hope Smith signs with Miami. Would love to see one of the whining obnoxious HarBAWL brothers take it on the chin. 49ers could wind up in a real scramble because of their desire to pursue Manning, that would be sweet.

  22. khuxford says: Mar 19, 2012 3:59 PM

Anyone who sinks the 9ers based on not getting Smith back is just stupid. He was more of a game manager than anything this passed season.

I happen to think Smith still has untapped potential, but Harbaugh was pragmatic and put him in a system that minimized the chance of mistakes and the defense minimized the need to take chances. the same can be done with the 2nd year QB and possibly the Other Josh.

  23. davidpcoelho says: Mar 19, 2012 4:00 PM

    3,144 yards, 17 TDs, 5 INTs, 5 Fumbles…

Face it, he is, at best, and average QB. He did not make the Niners and the Niners can do better.

You’d think Smith would want to stick with a coach who completely turned his career around. Yeah the 49ers made a push for Manning – so what. He’s a HOFer.

They’d have to pay me some serious dough to get me to leave a great situation in San Fran.

  34. hmpennypacker says: Mar 19, 2012 4:03 PM

He isn’t coming back and because of this effort to get Peyton we’ve gone from super bowl contender to also ran.

Kaepernick’s not ready but he’ll start. Teams will put eight in the box to stop Gore and blitz. Kap won’t be able to get the ball to Moss who will decide to live up to his #straightcashhomey rep and get cut by week 8.

This season has has gone from so much promise to a complete shibacle! Wouldn’t be surprised if we bring Culpepper in for another look. Again.

  35. bobwhitequail says: Mar 19, 2012 4:03 PM

“the dolphins are taking an aggressive approach”

Boy that sounds familiar, the press said they were taking an agressive approach with:

    Harbaugh, Fisher, Manning, Flynn.

Instead of saying they are taking an agressive approach they should just say something like, “Just as before, owner Stephen Ross is bragging about he won’t be outbid while GM Ireland screws around complaining about how expensive things are and plots ways to waste enough time so that the free agent will sign elsewhere”

  36. nflfollower says: Mar 19, 2012 4:03 PM

Honestly I was saying it all last year (and 49er fans were disagreeing), but almost any starting qb could have done what smith did last year with that defense and running game. Funny how quickly he goes from a “pro bowl snub” to a Replaceable over-rated qb in their minds.

  37. phinfan says: Mar 19, 2012 4:04 PM

Well if I had my choice or Alex or Tebow I would say… Alex. But if I had my choice it would be Moore to start.

  38. sj39 says: Mar 19, 2012 4:05 PM

Wow, as a Rams fan this off season/FA period is starting to look real good. Seattle signs a QB that has played well in, like one game with a great team (see Matt Cassel, Kevin Kolb etc.;etc;etc.). The Niners, between signing Moss (probably had him convinced Peyton would be the QB) and causing all kinds of internal strife with the QB situation, and of course the Big Red are what they are, the great trade the Rams made with the Skins and the players they have signed so far, things are looking real good for the Rams future.

  39. lilrob10201 says: Mar 19, 2012 4:05 PM

The 49ers may be in trouble for a QB if they do not get Peyton in there.

  40. 202folife says: Mar 19, 2012 4:05 PM

You guys write this stuff just so you can say another QB spurned the Dolphins if he decides to re-up with the 49ers. I’d rather ride with Matt Moore.

  43. sbxxix says: Mar 19, 2012 4:08 PM

The only reason to go to MIA if you’re Smith is probably his old high school teammate at Helix High in San Diego Reggie Bush. Nothing against the fins but they really have nothing going for them right now. This deal would only benefit… well no one really. Alex, put your pride aside and come back to SF. I know you’re mad cuz of the Manning thing but it’s Peyton F’ing Manning. Everyone knows how you do with new coordinators.

  44. omgitskardashian says: Mar 19, 2012 4:08 PM

As a Fins fan, I honestly don’t want Alex Smith. He should be thrilled they didn’t get Manning and just move on. They aren’t going to replace him in the draft since the have Kaepernic, but it would be Smith’s team, and it looks to be an SB-ready team. I would not want him to come to Miami because he doesn’t come with Harbaugh. Harbaugh made Smith a respectable quarterback. Smith proved early on that without coaching, he sucked. Philbin is a good coach, but he likes guys that can throw the deep ball. Alex Smith cannot throw the deep ball. God, Jeff Ireland is so stupid for not getting Matt Flynn. I’m calling it now, the Fins are either going to start Matt Moore or TIM TEBOW next year!!

Not to worry 49er fans, I’m sure Harbaugh has a qb in mind to lead his team if Smith goes to the Dolphins – Jim Harbaugh. HA HA
    Poetic justice.

  47. emaimo80 says: Mar 19, 2012 4:09 PM

San Fran fans don’t worry now smith will use Miami as leverage to get a better deal with the 9ers. Dolphin fans don’t worry we can’t land anyone except in the draft where players don’t really have a choice to play for us. It really sucks being a dolphin fan nowadays. I’m sure the worst news is coming soon. Tim tebow traded to dolphins for a first, second, and a third round pick, philbin resigns due to all the recent transactions/failed transactions. Can it get any worse??!!

  48. 49erstim says: Mar 19, 2012 4:09 PM

In seriousness…. This is my boy. Re-up Alex!

  49. woodsidegil says: Mar 19, 2012 4:10 PM

As a 49er fan I can say that Alex is a really nice young man, loyal, caring, hard working, and the type of person you’d want to marry your daughter. In other words not the guy you want playing qb for your team.

If Miami is the team he wants to play for I wish him well. For the 49ers, they can replace him with another average quarterback.

  50. bmceh says: Mar 19, 2012 4:11 PM

The Niners are still in a much better situation after losing the Manning race as compared to the Cards. Is it time to start the McNabb talk yet?

  51. gottaplan says: Mar 19, 2012 4:11 PM

  52. marcsasharc says: Mar 19, 2012 4:11 PM

make up your minds. you cant have it both ways.

  53. trubroncfan07 says: Mar 19, 2012 4:12 PM

I love all the 49er fans hating on Alex Smith. You will miss him next year and you will be lucky to win six games with Kapernick next year.

  54. wetpaperbag3 says: Mar 19, 2012 4:13 PM

Those of you saying “Bye Smith” or “Good riddance” need a wake up call. What other QB on the market can the 49ers get that could get the team at least back to the NFC Championship or get them over the hump and get them to the Superbowl besides Alex Smith? David “I Just Had Neck Surgery” Garrard?

Smith is that team’s best option now that Manning’s with Denver and it looks as if he MAY sign with the ‘Fish. 49ers are screwed. Now, they will HAVE to either start Kaepernick, draft another QB, give up some players to make a trade for a backup on another team, or wait until teams start cutting players during mini-camps/training camp.

  55. lucimorland says: Mar 19, 2012 4:13 PM

Watching Harbaugh lose his QB after acting like such a dick the past two years would be amazing.

Watching the Dolphins be the one to do it, after the way Harbaugh played them before signing with SF, is the best.

I love karma. Now shake hands like a nice boy, Harbaugh.

  56. nineroutsider says: Mar 19, 2012 4:13 PM

Alex is not thinking clearly. He goes to Miami he will be out of this league in 2 years. Alex needs Harbaugh much more than Harbaugh needs him. He stays with SF, he will always be looked at as a game manager, but he will have a chance for a bigger contract in 3 years if he continues to get better.

Prove us wrong Alex, but in the end you stay with the 9ers if you want to progress in this league. The 9ers will still win without him, but can he win without them?

His act is wearing thin. We stayed with for 7 years and you’re hurt because we flirted with a HOF’er after you didn’t sign the initial offer that could’ve prevented this whole thing from going down like this. Let that chick walk and bag a better one…

    ————————————————–

You’re wrong. Smith obviously has ALL the leverage. The 49ers offered him a 3-year deal and have went ALL-IN to win the SB NOW. The Dolphins have lost out on trading up for RG3, have lost out on the Manning Sweepstakes, and lost out on Matt Flynn. The FA QB’s are all but dried up with Smith and David Garrard still on the market and Garrard has come off of neck surgery.

Miami is desperate and the 49ers don’t have another viable option at QB at this point. So tell me again, who doesn’t have leverage?

  62. brenenostler says: Mar 19, 2012 4:22 PM

Don’t do it Smith. I know you’re mad at San Fran, but you have a better team there, a better coach, and you don’t have to go against New England twice a year.

  63. claymus1 says: Mar 19, 2012 4:22 PM

  64. ninerfan94954 says: Mar 19, 2012 4:24 PM

If he signs with Miami what a mistake…if he get’s more money and that is all that matters to him fine…those eastern sports writers aren’t going to be as benign as the ones out here when he starts tossing interceptions. Harbaugh and his staff put him into a position to produce.

  65. southbeachtalent says: Mar 19, 2012 4:24 PM

Completely disgusted. Our only hope is the draft and unsigned FA’s. At this point we should roll with Moore and draft a QB. What the hell are they thinking?? We are royally screwed dolphin faithful…

I am going to wait and let the whole thing play out, some of these contracts are ridiculous (this one included). But if the Dolphins do not right this ship they stand to lose a huge chunk of their fan base. I will never stop being a fins fan, but I will not go to a single game or buy any merchandise with a dolphins logo. I am sick and tired of this disaster of an organization. Its beyond embarrassing….

  67. 49ersforlife says: Mar 19, 2012 4:25 PM

Smith is a good QB. Not a great one. But he has to understand one thing. Last year he succeeded because of Jim Harbaugh, and the Defense. The same team can make Colin.K or Josh Johnson as good as Alex Smith with enough Offensive play makers. In fact if Alex comes back he will look much better with 49ers otherwise, it will be 8th OC in 8 years for Alex. Good Luck to alex, wherever he goes and hope he succeeds.

  68. freedomispopular says: Mar 19, 2012 4:26 PM

49ers put a price on a player and that’s what they offer. They will not change their offer now. This is not the Jets (Sanchez) or Dolphins (Sparano) who offer consolation extensions.

Alex Smith has little to no market value. He needs the 49ers a lot more than they need Alex. Jim Harbaugh is one of the best QB coaches in the world and his track record show that.

The 49ers know what they are doing and Alex will have to take it or leave it, even if it means setting themselves marginally back a year.

  73. 1972wasalongtimeago says: Mar 19, 2012 4:31 PM

When Alex Smith was celebrating in the end zone at the end of the Saints playoff game, he seemed pretty beloved in San Francisco to me.

Dolphins fans haven’t had a playoff moment like that since Lamar Smith’s TD run in OT against Colts in 2000. And before that, it was Marino to Clayton vs KC in 1990. And before that was AJ Duhe vs Jets in 1982.

I’d say we’re due. Sign him up. More proven than Flynn. Better tools than Moore. Playing with a chip on his shoulder.

But of course we’re going to screw this up.

We are “LOLing” at the Niners not because Smith was great, but because they overplayed their hand and are now losing out on both their QB options. Didn’t have the cash (or something else he desired) for Manning, and alienated Smith in the process now he will likely spite them by going elsewhere. Arrogant Harbaugh getting his come-uppance, it’s fantastic.

Harbaugh didn’t “play” the Dolphins, twit. They came after him like a drunk prom date and Harbaugh could smell the stench and opted for less money, better situation.

Secondly, if you think Harbaugh can’t get at least similar production out of another QB not named Alex Smith, then you clearly have no idea that his track record with QBs says otherwise.

The same price as the 49ers have paid slightly over market value for the free agents they got this year? The 49ers have money and have been using it. Why not slide Smith some extra cheese? If he weren’t worth it, the 49ers wouldn’t have offered him an extension/3-year deal.

the same people saying “LOL @ 49ers” are the same people saying that Alex Smith held the rest of the team back.
make up your minds. you cant have it both ways.
    ————————————————-

We are “LOLing” at the Niners not because Smith was great, but because they overplayed their hand and are now losing out on both their QB options. Didn’t have the cash (or something else he desired) for Manning, and alienated Smith in the process now he will likely spite them by going elsewhere. Arrogant Harbaugh getting his come-uppance, it’s fantastic.

    ————————————–

youre wrong. it was Alex who turned down SF before Manning did. do your homework. SF offered him a very fair, over market value 3 year $24 mil deal…Alex sat on it due to his agent’s advice. the same agent who represents Manning. conflict of interest? SF ovbiously wanted Smith before Manning.

Maybe these idiots in the front office should give Matt Moore a real shot. Guy had a decent qb rating, no ota’s no tranning camp horrible right side of our Oline, and played in a super conservative tony sporano offense. Alex smith had a good year but not much better then Moore. And the niners were clearly a better team last year.

In seriousness…. This is my boy. Re-up Alex!
    ————————————————————-
During the entire Manning thing, I was saying resign Alex. But in thinking about after this crap…DAMN, OK the 9ers still need him.

Feels like Condon played the 9ers a number of different ways and I don’t like it. Tempting to see if Kaep is ready.

I trust coach and Trent, whatever they want to do…

Manning called the 9ers, the whole thing was orchestrated. Condon is a dirtbag…

its pretty obvious smith is using miami for a better deal from the niners. I hope he gets it and goes to the niners. Moore is just as good as smith IMO. miami should draft a QB

“Wow, has any team gone from potentially overwhelming SB favorites to totally horsef***ed quicker than the 49ers can?”

Yes, because with Alex Smith at Quarterback the 49ers had the 31st ranked, 3rd down percentage ( the quarterback down) in the league last year. I’m sure without him they are totally screwed!

i believe they knew this could happen, and have alternate plans in place (ie; Josh Johnson & Colin)

the one who could really be over-playing his hand is Alex Smith…. what happens when Miami trades for Tebo, and Alex gets the Kyle Orton treatment…

Remember Alex had an offer on the table for a month before “Arrogant” Jim watched Peyton throw… it is a business and Alex need to stop crying, sign with the Dolphins and watch the Niners win without him.

  90. trollaikman8 says: Mar 19, 2012 4:52 PM

I hope Miami throws $10M/yr at Smith and forces the niners to cough up that kinda money to keep the barely above average Smith.

  91. mwcarolina says: Mar 19, 2012 4:55 PM

in my book this team MUST get a QB in free agency, people will say Tannehill this and Tannehill that, but i think they need to use that pick on a WR like Floyd or Wright. As for who that QB should be is anyone’s guess. if it’s Smith or Tebow, i think both could be good fits due to having Bush and if the Dolphins are wise and get a WR like Floyd, then their offense could be good, but do i see any of this happening, no.

  92. mainstreamsux says: Mar 19, 2012 4:57 PM

Can someone explain to me why we drafted Kaep last year and were so high on him? If Smith can manage 18 games and win 14, Kaep can do the same. If Harbaugh is such a QB guru, then he can do it with his 2nd round pick. He’s got the tools to do it. It would be a slow start to the season, but the weapons are in place, and 12-4 0r 11-5 would be more realistic. but imagine what 2013 could be like!!!

  93. steeelfann says: Mar 19, 2012 4:57 PM

Uhm, cuse me, but why is the SF mgt and Harbaugh not getting absolutely destroyed by media??

You have a QB who had a very good year. Good character always hangs in there. Plays great in 4th against Saints pulls out a win. Has the Giants who went on to win the Super Bowl beaten except for 2 ONCE IN A CENTURY COMBO special teams gaffes.

No way Giants win that game without that kid dropping ball and getting hit with the other one, game over.

So what does San Fran do? Totally insult the guy who was loyal to them and who came through big time. Total Jerry Jonesian/Dan Snyeresque. I hope they have to play those two young guys this year and miss the playoffs.

  94. gmen1987 says: Mar 19, 2012 5:03 PM

Wow, there is a lot of Colin Kaepernick fangirls here.

Kaepernick was not that great of a prospect. His ability to read defenses is suspect.

  95. dolphins4 says: Mar 19, 2012 5:03 PM

Smith played great at Utah and last year for the 49ers so Ross and Ireland please over spend if you have to just sign Smith already.

  96. xplicitpits says: Mar 19, 2012 5:06 PM

  98. anythingbutyanks says: Mar 19, 2012 5:09 PM

Wow…obviously didn’t happen, but WHAT IF? What if Arizona had not kept Kolb with his $7M bonus due, and then missed out on PM? What if the 49ers lose Smith because they went so hard after PM? What if Miami lost out on Flynn because they stayed on PM for too long? There is, or at least was, a very real chance that Manning could have destroyed AZ, SF, Miami (heck, even Denver if he hadn’t gone there instead of TN) just by NOT signing fast enough. And what if (God forbid!) Manning’s neck is injured early in the season in Denver and they no longer have Tebow on the roster? How could one player f up so many teams without actually beating them on the field?!

  99. damce1 says: Mar 19, 2012 5:11 PM

OK…. Alex Smith was offered a contract. He chose not to sign it and test the market… SO the 49ers dissed A.S. by going after another QB, while he was looking for other teams???!!! I dont understand how you people are coming up with all this poor Alex or Harbs is greedy nonsense. You have to be seahawk trolls idk.

As a 49er fan I was hoping Alex would sign with Miami before P.M. made up his mind. Now we have a chance of getting him back. Alex Smith is proof you can polish a turd. Niners are better off w/o him.

  100. sixjak says: Mar 19, 2012 5:11 PM

So many critics and 9er fans a like gave the 9ers no shot of doing anything last year. And here we go again, the 9ers aren’t going to do anything without Alex. Really? I like the guy okay and supported him for years and was happy for him last year to finally have a season that wouldn’t be considered an embarrassment. He’s a quality person but he’s not an elite QB. It’s not like the 9ers are suddenly the 2011 Colts or the 1999 9ers. Both teams had QB’s that covered the many glaring team weaknesses. This is not the case with AS,

  101. killitandeatit says: Mar 19, 2012 5:13 PM

I think Alex is just acting out right now. He’s a smart guy and how can he need more money? What is a million more dollars ? Many of us fans ,ok. a few of us have always seen the Alex we had last year. Alex had to survive some idiot coaching and injuries he suffered for the crimson and gold. Alex : the poker game is over, take the deal. Miami ???? l.ol.lol…

  102. liveordie49ers says: Mar 19, 2012 5:28 PM

I didn’t like Alex Smith when the Niners drafted him and I still don’t like him. Somebody on here said Niner fans were calling him a “pro bowl snub”, and now the same fans are calling him “overrated”…. I missed all of that. As a long time Niner fan myself he honestly surprised me last year… But by no means was he a “pro bowl snub”. I still held my breath everytime he threw the ball in hopes that it would hit a Niner in the chest rather than the opposition. Harbaugh made him into the QB he was last year (with a system designed for him) so why would anyone believe he couldn’t do ATLEAST the same thing with Kapaernik? He has had a year to learn the offense, he’ll have his bumps and bruises to get through but there aren’t too many QB’s that come out of the gate putting up pro bowl numbers anyways. It took Alex Smith 7 seasons to look average. Give Baalke and Harbaugh a little more credit. What else have we had to rely on in the last 9 years???

  103. donz0 says: Mar 19, 2012 5:45 PM

Alex Smith will transform into the next Drew Brees.

  104. killitandeatit says: Mar 19, 2012 5:47 PM

The niner brass wants Alex back at their price. They know what they have in C.K. and they went for Peyton. In the 49er brass I trust and if C.K. was ready Alex would be begging for a back up spot on any team he could find.

  105. cavemanna says: Mar 19, 2012 5:58 PM

fact is Smith is more talented than Moore and more talented than Flynn will ever be. There was a reason he was the first overall pick, and it is his physical abilities. the only thing that hels Smith back was coaching and confidence which he lacked both up until last year and we all saw the difference in that. It would be a great signing for the Dolphins. He is the prototypical WCO QB.

  106. thewizardofbs says: Mar 19, 2012 6:02 PM

So after Alex Smith decides to not sign with the fins how long do they wait before they tell Matt Moore that he was the QB they wanted all along, like they did to Tony Sporano las year?

  107. ampats says: Mar 19, 2012 6:02 PM

    1972wasalongtimeago,

Did many fans in Miami get to see that run in 2000 because if my memory is correct, that game was blacked out since it didn’t sell out. I was in the Keyes at the time and watched at a sports bar.

Good Yiskor post earlier today !! Thumbs up !

  108. WestCoastVet says: Mar 19, 2012 6:03 PM

Get that money homie! Alex, you’re overrated. You may get a bigger contract with Miami who’s desperate for a QB but you will FAIL MISERABLY with a crap team like that. And as someone else says, when your contract with them expires, your career will be over.

Not that I want you back, I can’t wait to get rid of you. But remove the stick from whatever orifice it’s in and man up. This is a business, he’s a HOFer. You didn’t accept our extremely accurate number that represented your worth/talent so we went after him.

  109. rbrtcross7 says: Mar 19, 2012 6:06 PM

Yes, Harbaugh was a big influence on Smith, however, it doesn’t say much for the previous coaching at San Francisco either. Remember also, it takes a good QB to absorb a new system and thrive in it. Also, don’t forget that Smith’s progress was slowed by injuries too.The fact is, save a couple of special teams blunders, Smith might be holding the Super Bowl MVP. Smith didn’t just do OK, he made the big plays and WON games. The chemstry on the 49ers was great. Good luck getting to the Super Bowl without him. I think it’s really sad what the 49ers did to him. I wouldn’t come back if I were him. P.S. – Josh Johnson is nowhere near ready to start either.

  110. adamwest101 says: Mar 19, 2012 6:10 PM

dolphins should definitely be looking for someone better than smith. he’s not much of an upgrade over moore, if that. let him go back to san francisco. 8+ million per would be stupid.

The same price as the 49ers have paid slightly over market value for the free agents they got this year? The 49ers have money and have been using it. Why not slide Smith some extra cheese? If he weren’t worth it, the 49ers wouldn’t have offered him an extension/3-year deal.

    —————————————-

Because they’d prefer to wait 1-2 seasons to start Kaepernick. Smith is a serviceable band aid and played well enough to be extended.

Extra cheese? $8M/year isn’t enough? Alex Smith has stolen more money from the 49ers than they will EVER see in dividends. I admire his work ethic and mental toughness, but without the 49ers, he would have been out of the league 2 years ago.

Concerning their cap room — if a team has cap room, they should spend it mindlessly? Do you work for the Jets, because that must have been their thinking when they extended Mark Sanchez.

Smith was efficient in many areas, but he was also one of the worst QBs on third down and in the red zone, which, frankly, are two of the biggest areas a QB needs to be good at.

My guess is that the 49ers are saving their cap room for rookies, more FAs and possibly Mike Wallace.

  112. cap1378 says: Mar 19, 2012 6:37 PM

Love the 9ers fans scrambling to keep Alex smith now after this Peyton mess. I hope he goes to another team. They gave him no respect. Who’s gonna throw to moss and manningham now? Harbaugh?

  115. 49ers73 says: Mar 19, 2012 7:46 PM

ya know what, here you all go. let’s start kaep and send alex packing, alex is not the future, Colin is and make no misyake about it, harbaugh and baalke want kaepernick starting next year. So Alex has figured out he’s not going to be here to end his career, oh well. Colin could end up running for 1000 yards and throwing for 4000 in a rookie season with this team. All this means is that were gonna have to move on from smith one year early.

  116. pancanfinfan says: Mar 19, 2012 7:55 PM

west coast dolphin fan here got to see Alex Smith play every weekend. You will like this guy and he will win games. He made the turnaround last year and will work well in the Philbin style offense. Don’t go ballistic if he’s signed –this is not the same guy from 5 years ago. Dolphins will have done well to get him and I like the FU it delivers to Harbaugh!
