west coast dolphin fan here got to see Alex Smith play every weekend. You will like this guy and he will win games. He made the turnaround last year and will work well in the Philbin style offense. Don’t go ballistic if he’s signed –this is not the same guy from 5 years ago. Dolphins will have done well to get him and I like the FU it delivers to Harbaugh!

ya know what, here you all go. let’s start kaep and send alex packing, alex is not the future, Colin is and make no misyake about it, harbaugh and baalke want kaepernick starting next year. So Alex has figured out he’s not going to be here to end his career, oh well. Colin could end up running for 1000 yards and throwing for 4000 in a rookie season with this team. All this means is that were gonna have to move on from smith one year early.

Because they’d prefer to wait 1-2 seasons to start Kaepernick. Smith is a serviceable band aid and played well enough to be extended.

Extra cheese? $8M/year isn’t enough? Alex Smith has stolen more money from the 49ers than they will EVER see in dividends. I admire his work ethic and mental toughness, but without the 49ers, he would have been out of the league 2 years ago.

Concerning their cap room — if a team has cap room, they should spend it mindlessly? Do you work for the Jets, because that must have been their thinking when they extended Mark Sanchez.

Smith was efficient in many areas, but he was also one of the worst QBs on third down and in the red zone, which, frankly, are two of the biggest areas a QB needs to be good at.

My guess is that the 49ers are saving their cap room for rookies, more FAs and possibly Mike Wallace.

Yes, Harbaugh was a big influence on Smith, however, it doesn’t say much for the previous coaching at San Francisco either. Remember also, it takes a good QB to absorb a new system and thrive in it. Also, don’t forget that Smith’s progress was slowed by injuries too.The fact is, save a couple of special teams blunders, Smith might be holding the Super Bowl MVP. Smith didn’t just do OK, he made the big plays and WON games. The chemstry on the 49ers was great. Good luck getting to the Super Bowl without him. I think it’s really sad what the 49ers did to him. I wouldn’t come back if I were him. P.S. – Josh Johnson is nowhere near ready to start either.

Get that money homie! Alex, you’re overrated. You may get a bigger contract with Miami who’s desperate for a QB but you will FAIL MISERABLY with a crap team like that. And as someone else says, when your contract with them expires, your career will be over.

Not that I want you back, I can’t wait to get rid of you. But remove the stick from whatever orifice it’s in and man up. This is a business, he’s a HOFer. You didn’t accept our extremely accurate number that represented your worth/talent so we went after him.

fact is Smith is more talented than Moore and more talented than Flynn will ever be. There was a reason he was the first overall pick, and it is his physical abilities. the only thing that hels Smith back was coaching and confidence which he lacked both up until last year and we all saw the difference in that. It would be a great signing for the Dolphins. He is the prototypical WCO QB.

I didn’t like Alex Smith when the Niners drafted him and I still don’t like him. Somebody on here said Niner fans were calling him a “pro bowl snub”, and now the same fans are calling him “overrated”…. I missed all of that. As a long time Niner fan myself he honestly surprised me last year… But by no means was he a “pro bowl snub”. I still held my breath everytime he threw the ball in hopes that it would hit a Niner in the chest rather than the opposition. Harbaugh made him into the QB he was last year (with a system designed for him) so why would anyone believe he couldn’t do ATLEAST the same thing with Kapaernik? He has had a year to learn the offense, he’ll have his bumps and bruises to get through but there aren’t too many QB’s that come out of the gate putting up pro bowl numbers anyways. It took Alex Smith 7 seasons to look average. Give Baalke and Harbaugh a little more credit. What else have we had to rely on in the last 9 years???

OK…. Alex Smith was offered a contract. He chose not to sign it and test the market… SO the 49ers dissed A.S. by going after another QB, while he was looking for other teams???!!! Wow…obviously didn’t happen, but WHAT IF? What if Arizona had not kept Kolb with his $7M bonus due, and then missed out on PM? What if the 49ers lose Smith because they went so hard after PM? What if Miami lost out on Flynn because they stayed on PM for too long? There is, or at least was, a very real chance that Manning could have destroyed AZ, SF, Miami (heck, even Denver if he hadn’t gone there instead of TN) just by NOT signing fast enough. And what if (God forbid!) Manning’s neck is injured early in the season in Denver and they no longer have Tebow on the roster? How could one player f up so many teams without actually beating them on the field?!

You have a QB who had a very good year. Good character always hangs in there. Plays great in 4th against Saints pulls out a win. Has the Giants who went on to win the Super Bowl beaten except for 2 ONCE IN A CENTURY COMBO special teams gaffes.

No way Giants win that game without that kid dropping ball and getting hit with the other one, game over.

So what does San Fran do? Totally insult the guy who was loyal to them and who came through big time. Total Jerry Jonesian/Dan Snyeresque. I hope they have to play those two young guys this year and miss the playoffs.

Can someone explain to me why we drafted Kaep last year and were so high on him? If Smith can manage 18 games and win 14, Kaep can do the same. If Harbaugh is such a QB guru, then he can do it with his 2nd round pick. He’s got the tools to do it. It would be a slow start to the season, but the weapons are in place, and 12-4 0r 11-5 would be more realistic. but imagine what 2013 could be like!!!

in my book this team MUST get a QB in free agency, people will say Tannehill this and Tannehill that, but i think they need to use that pick on a WR like Floyd or Wright. As for who that QB should be is anyone’s guess. if it’s Smith or Tebow, i think both could be good fits due to having Bush and if the Dolphins are wise and get a WR like Floyd, then their offense could be good, but do i see any of this happening, no.

Yes, because with Alex Smith at Quarterback the 49ers had the 31st ranked, 3rd down percentage ( the quarterback down) in the league last year. I’m sure without him they are totally screwed!
