Old Colts gang may be reunited in Denver

Peyton Manning Pic Getty Images

MDS passed along news earlier today that the Broncos had broached the idea with Peyton Manning of bringing former Colts center Jeff Saturday to Denver, should Manning sign with the team. Manning will do so soon.

The Broncos are taking the next step in their pursuit of the five-time Pro Bowl center.

Per NFL Network’s Jason La Canfora, the Broncos have scheduled a free agent visit with Saturday. La Canfora also reports that the Broncos will “likely” sign former Colts slot receiver Brandon Stokley.

More ex-Colts that could land in Denver include tight end Dallas Clark, as MDS also suggested, and free agent running back Joseph Addai. Addai lacks dynamic running ability, but he is a trusted pass protector and check-down receiver.

Most of the above signings should be affordable, not that the Broncos are up against the salary cap. Addai and Clark have drawn little to no interest in free agency, and nor has Stokley.

All three of those players may be willing to sign for the veteran’s minimum.

    Colts =Broncos = Horsies?

Is there a connection between these solid-hoofed herbivorous quadruped’s?

  6. genno334 says: Mar 19, 2012 5:12 PM

Manning needs to lobby for Clark and Addai. Clark injured is better than who they have at TE now anyways. Who is their tight end even??

I’m not a Broncos fan by any means, but to have Clark and Addai would make the Denver Broncos very dynamic with Thomas, Decker, McGahee, Clark, Addai. It may not be superstar worthy names, but it’ll get the job done and Manning another Superbowl win!

Last I recall, wasn’t Indy’s 2010 season mostly a disappointment? And now Denver is populating itself with their former declining vets? Man Elway really wanted to dumped Tebow.

  22. cmr123 says: Mar 19, 2012 5:17 PM

Everyone acts like the Colts won the SB every year when they only won once and that was before a 35 year old Manning missed a entire season. Manning may still be great but they are gambling like it is a 80-20 bet that they win the SB next year. This will prove to be a very average move at best. They already sell out so their are no new ticket sales and at best they get a QB who won 1 SB with a team totally built for him. I am not a Bronco fan or hater and i am not a Tebow lover.

  23. annes22 says: Mar 19, 2012 5:17 PM

Yes, probably you are. The only problem is some of them are getting old, and could end up injured.

  24. bearsstillsuck says: Mar 19, 2012 5:18 PM

I’d get them all but addai. If your paying Peyton all of that money, you might as well but familiar faces around him. Plus, the broncos do need offensive help.

  25. benyamen says: Mar 19, 2012 5:18 PM

@medtxpack I think trying to buy a SuperBowl is what most GM’s in the NFL are paid to do.

  26. cardmagnet says: Mar 19, 2012 5:18 PM

Addai is better than Knowshow, I guess.

  27. chipwrecked says: Mar 19, 2012 5:18 PM

Bringing back old Colt players doesn’t necessarily make Denver better. Depends on the players. Clark would be a good addition. But Stokely and Addai?? Why not Edgerrin James?? Sounds nice if you are thinking of these guys as the players in their prime. But the truth is all of these guys are on the tail end of their careers. If anyone thinks this will be the Colts of the mid-2000′s they are kidding themselves.

  28. kolbydoerge says: Mar 19, 2012 5:18 PM

Wait, so they are going to bring in Manning’s long time center, a former colt’s reciever, his running back for the last few years and his long-time tight end, but Denver won’t be like the Colts 2.0?

    you people are odd.

  33. patsfanva says: Mar 19, 2012 5:22 PM

As a pats fan I want the law firm back, but he would make a lot of sense in denver over addai. Even if manning isn’t great over the next few years it gets them out from under the tebow cloud, so it’s a great move.

  34. eaglesnoles05 says: Mar 19, 2012 5:22 PM

  35. profootballwalk says: Mar 19, 2012 5:23 PM

  39. therolandobottom says: Mar 19, 2012 5:27 PM

This never works. Reinventing an old team on another one. Addai, Clark, Stokley and Manning are old. They won 1 superbowl 6 years ago. Manning has missed a year. Not worried. Raider Nation.

  40. idiotwatching says: Mar 19, 2012 5:27 PM

Great idea. Let’s runite the team that fell short of the Super Bowl far more than it made it to the big game, and let’s do it when they are all older.

The Colts teams from the 2000s were great but they have one SuperBowl win to show for it. The Broncos were an overacheiving team last year with talent in the right places, missing only a steadier quarterback. Why mess with the chemistry by bringing guys in just to appease Peyton?

I’m not a Peyton hater, nor am I anti-Denver. But the lengths people have already gone to make Peyton feel important should be enough.

  41. turbodog1027 says: Mar 19, 2012 5:29 PM

This isn’t like the Yankees at all — it isn’t like Denver is outbidding the rest of the league for Joseph Addai.

So they aren’t exactly a sure thing, but if they still have something to give, can add to the offense, and the price is right, and if Peyton wants them, then I see no reason why Denver should say no.

  48. ebbycalvinlaloosh says: Mar 19, 2012 5:37 PM

C J.D. Walton is the weak link on the offensive line for the Broncos. Saturday makes sense. Dallas Clark makes sense, too, if the deal is a short one (1-2 years). They’re going to draft a running back to pair with McGahee rather than sign Addai. Stokley has been let go at the end of training camp before, and likely will be again if he signs.

before you start celebrating in Denver, remember
peyton had all these guys healthy in Indy in 2010, and the best they could do was lose in the 1st rd of the playoffs at home against Sanchez. They finished 10-7 and Peyton threw 17 picks. That is probably about what Denver will do this year.

  63. forevercorr says: Mar 19, 2012 5:56 PM

Clark should be signed ASAP. I don’t mind Saturday so Peyton can have some familiarity, but Walton is also showing a lot of promise as a young center. I’d rather have the law firm or Michael Bush over Addai. Either of those guys would compliment McGahee well. Stokely would be OK as a depth guy, but I’d really like a returner/speed guy to compliment Decker and Thomas.

Oh, and Raiders fans, I’d focus on how thin your team is looking now and for the next few years before you start running your mouth. Peyton’s just getting money. Carson stole the future and his fair share of cap space.

  64. footballisking says: Mar 19, 2012 5:57 PM

1 SB in 14 years but the most wins of any other franchise on that span. I take Saturday and Clark and stay the hell away from addai BC of toooo many injuries. Do u want tebow back or do u want Peyton Mike Wallace Clark and Saturday to build off an 8-8 record. Lets not forget the colts also had the worst run defense and near last offense

Saturday is a key to the success PM’s has had.
PM reads the D, calls an audible and Saturday audibles the line play based on what PM changed to. granted another center or lineman could call line play, but they need to hit the ground running in the few years they all (FA Colts) have left.

I think everyone needs to understand the facts reported here and the speculation. Facts: Manning wants to/will sign and Saturday coming in for a visit. All the other players mentioned are speculation. Don’t take the speculation as fact and be critical of Denver. EVERYONE has been reading reports (aka speculation based on no fact) that former Indy players will be signed with Manning.

  83. seanathan297 says: Mar 19, 2012 7:01 PM

Not really sure why everyone is acting like the Colts offense was the reason for a lack of Super Bowls over the last 14 years. I guess I didnt see that memo…

If the Broncos bring in Saturday and Clark, they will be in good shape. Manning has certainly done more with less during his career. For anyone that doubts, find a Colts offensive player who left the team in the last 14 years and had better years elsewhere. Guy makes everyone around him much better players.

  84. jeffbye says: Mar 19, 2012 7:02 PM

Saturday I’m sure will play at a high enough level to do the job, but most likely he’s being brought in as a patch job until they can draft someone else to take over permanently. I’ve never been impressed by Addai, but again that may be due to the role he was given in Indy.

Stokley, however, is a clutch receiver. Provided he’s healthy, the guy is incredibly consistent when it comes to those precision throws and plays with narrow margins for error. I’d certainly give him a shot, and I’m surprised nobody else has picked him up for at least a one year deal.

  85. nflovercollegefb says: Mar 19, 2012 7:03 PM

Pay-me-a-ton and his band of geriatrics have a plan. It will fail. He is the most overrated, unclutch, HOF’er to ever play the game. Leaving the Colts was about money, nothing else. Who will he blame when he extends his playoff mediocrity? Elway? The age of his skill players? I wish him and his new fans nothing but disappointment. Hopefully the new crop of QB’s will help us forget Mr. “We had some protection issues”

This move put the broncos right back at the top pf contention. For too long fans had to endure horrible seasons, they haven’t had a franchise QB since Elway and you have to give Elway credit, he knows what it takes to get to the superbowl, he’s been five times. The broncos only had 1 good season after Elway when plummer took them to the championship. No franchise QB in 11 years, now with manning the broncos can find that person to be his successor if tebow is not the answer. I say manning win at least one more superbowl in his tenure with the broncos but it’ll be worth it because the broncos are guaranteed to not have a losing season
