Here's how Fells is a "key piece". He is NOT a "key piece" in terms of him catching 50 balls and 5 TDs. No. Fells is a "key piece" because they now have 3 TEs for their 3 TE sets, which they use a lot. Last year, they used OT Nate Solder as the 3rd TE (Solder was a TE in high school and recruited as a TE at Colorado) because they didn't HAVE a 3rd TE. Plus, with the possible retirement of Matt Light, Solder will be used exclusively as an OT. Also, this allows Aaron Hernandez to be used exclusively as a receiver in the Shannon Sharpe mold (Not really a TE, not really a WR). So, in acquiring Fells, the "acquired" another receiver--Hernandez (you will probably not see Hernandez block on the line at all this year with Fells on board). In a nutshell, THIS is how Fells is a "key piece".

People will see this as a kind of a luxury signing, but the Patriots really needed to get a 3rd TE. They played a lot of 3 TE sets in 2010 with Alge Crumpler, and with only 2 TE last year they mostly had to use Nate Solder as a 3rd TE after a failed stint by Gronk’s brother.

This now frees up Solder to start at left tackle in case Matt Light retires or at right tackle if Vollmer’s back injury comes back.
----------------------
Exactly. At least now when they have Fells in there (as opposed to Vollmer) there is at least some chance he might be in there to catch a pass.

Also, Gronk is a great blocker. The video / audio on him blocking Ngata and Suggs during the AFC Championship game (like most of his videos) is both impressive and hilarious. Kid likes to block. Gronk!

It's the NFL. Who's to say that both Gronkowski and Hernandez aren't on IR by Labor Day ?

You have to have depth to "survive " the rigors of the regular season plus playoffs .

Elway and company are so wrapped up in asking Manning to be their prom date that they are letting some key pieces of the team disappear through free agency.

Yep, and a Tenn beat writer (Wyatt) says the Titan's entire FA plan is messed up now because they are waiting around on him. They already lost a chance at Abraham due to their PM love. And whichever team "wins" the PM sweepstakes will then bring in as many binkies of his as they can like Clark, maybe even Saturday. And they won't make the SB this year even though they cater to him 100%..And I will laugh and laugh. No one player is worth all that.

Elway and company are so wrapped up in asking Manning to be their prom date that they are letting some key pieces of the team disappear through free agency. Fells was the one TE on the roster with skills (even after Denver drafted two TE's last year) and I'd bet that DT Bunkley, their best run stopper, will be signed by the Saints. WR/PR Eddie Royal left last week to S.D. Instead of adding to the team fans are seeing it fall apart piece by piece.

People will see this as a kind of a luxury signing, but the Patriots really needed to get a 3rd TE. They played a lot of 3 TE sets in 2010 with Alge Crumpler, and with only 2 TE last year they mostly had to use Nate Solder as a 3rd TE after a failed stint by Gronk's brother.

This now frees up Solder to start at left tackle in case Matt Light retires or at right tackle if Vollmer's back injury comes back.

Fells is not a good blocking TE. At least he wasn't last year.

But then again, Hernandez isn't either. He's a big WR that takes hand offs.
